  • Can I Install a Stand Alone Copy of XP onto an Ancient Dell Store Build Without it Imploding?

The reason I ask is that I have messed with Dells before and it was a nightmare, and this particular system is actually still working so I don't want to try to do this and end up with it not working at all.

The machine is 15 years old and is a typical Dell running Windows XP. Trust me I have tried to talk the person into using it as a flying object, they can't afford to replace it and they are computer illiterate.

There are no original OS disks or system images to use.

I have an old copy of Windows XP I purchased for a custom build that is no longer in use. My plan is to wipe the hard drive on the Dell and then give him the copy of XP that I have, install that on there so that all that is on there is the new O/S.

Last time I fixed a Dell I swore I would never touch them again, but this is a good friend. Has anybody done this before and if so, are there any tricks that I need to know? I recall that back in the day not only did Dell have its own unique components but it also had all the software locked down like Fort Knox, and I ended up having to find programs to unlock everything.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
