What's the name of these books?
When I was a kid (circa mid 90s) I read a bunch of books...maybe it was a series, or maybe just by the same author, and they were always about a teen girl with a serious illness. There was one about a girl named Lacey who I think worked at a summer camp or something, and I think she had diabetes...she was getting too thin and her boyfriend was worried about her. There was another about a girl who was adopted and needed a kidney transplant, but none of her family members were a match (obviously.) I think there was even one where the girl died. Does anyone else remember these? I think I bought them from those Scholastic forms you'd get at school.

Any input would be appreciated! (see image)
3 AnswersHobbies & Crafts8 years agoWhat do you call it? UK, Australia, Ireland...?
I know that you guys have different words for some things than us in America, but I'm wondering what you call certain things. Like, if a flashlight is a torch, what do you call an actual torch (flaming stick thing)?
If a crib is a cot, what do you call a cot http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://nickshe... (pic)
If diapers are nappies, what do you call a nap (rest period during the day)?
If cookies are biscuits, what do you call a biscuit (flaky bread thing)?
If vacation is holiday, what do you call a holiday (special day of celebration)?
Hmmm, I thought I had more but I can't think of any. Anyway, this is just a question for curiosity's sake and I hope I get a few answers! TIA!
1 AnswerOther - Pregnancy & Parenting1 decade agoCan you ever truly be rid of a lifelong phobia?
I've been emetiphobic since I was a kid (fear of throwing up/others throwing up) and it only seems to be getting worse. About a year ago, I finally sought help. My doctor Rxed a low dose anti-anxiety med and sessions with a psychotherapist. The meds helped with general anxiety but did nothing to change my phobia. The therapy sessions did nothing (and the therapist I saw had over 30 years of experience and came highly recommended, and my sister even ended up seeing him and said he helped her.) I had to discontinue the meds a few months ago when I got pregnant, but plan to start up again after the baby's born (even though they don't help my phobia) and discontinued the therapy at my therapist's and my opinion that it just wasn't doing anything. So I wonder...is this just how I'll be for the rest of my life and the best I can hope to do is just live with it? Are there any REAL ways to cure a phobia completely?

2 AnswersPregnancy1 decade agoTis the season to be...sick....?
Some people think going out in cold weather will make you sick. Some say because it's so cold, everyone is closed up indoors and germs spread more easily. Whatever you think is the cause, I think we can all agree that people get sick much more often in the winter months than in the summer months. So, my question is, what about the people who live in states that don't get any winter weather? Places where it's warm all year round....? Do they get sick more often in the winter?
2 AnswersOther - Pregnancy & Parenting1 decade agoA Question for Moms of More Than Two Children?
When one of your kids gets sick, do you try and quarantine him or her? It seems like a good idea in theory, but I can't imagine being able to do it successfully. When one of mine gets sick, I kinda just accept that we're all going to be sick soon enough because there's no way (well, no realistic way) to contain the germs. My toddlers share cups, toys and snot. We live in a small apartment, all closed in together. I kiss one kid, then lean in to kiss the next one. Have you found a way to stop the spread of germs in your family or do you just let the germs make their rounds?

5 AnswersPregnancy1 decade agoVegan....no more (20 characters)?
My husband has been a vegan for the last 7 years. He's 23 years old. After some thought, he's decided he no longer wants to be a vegan. Right now he's on his way to his sister's house to hang out and eat sausage pizza. How affected will his body be this sudden change? Anyone have first hand experience with this? Will he be super sick? How long will it take for his body to get used to dairy again? (And meat, and eggs, etc) What kind of side effects should we expect and how long will they last?
8 AnswersVegetarian & Vegan1 decade agoDoes it sound like this recipe would work?
I was searching for the world's easiest pie crust recipe and I may have found it. However, it doesn't sound like it would work...
1 stick butter
1 cup flour
2 tbsp sugar
That sounds like too much butter and not enough flour. And there's no baking powder/soda or even salt....Would this kind of recipe work?
2 AnswersCooking & Recipes1 decade agoDo your kids throw up? (Repost)?
Of course they do, right? I mean, all kids do...
Except my kids, apparently. I have a 7 yr old, a 2 yr old and a 1 yr old. The older two very rarely spit up as babies. The youngest spit up more than my first, but less than I've seen most babies. He has never thrown up. The older two have thrown up once, last year, when we got food poisoning. My then 6 year old didn't even know what was happening because he'd never done it before. Mind you, I am NOT complaining. I have emetophobia (fear of throwing up) so having kids that don't throw up is probably the only thing keeping me sane. But I still don't get it...I mean, little kids puke a lot, right? And even if not a lot, certainly SOME times, right? Again, no complaints from me, but I'm wondering if one day my good luck is going to run out, like, all of a sudden my kids are going to turn into "normal" kids who get sick at the drop of a hat. Does anyone else have kids like mine?
I should point out that although they're all pretty healthy, they get their fair share of seasonal colds and an occasional fever. They even get "stomach bugs" now and then, but without the vomiting.
5 AnswersParenting1 decade agoHelp! I don't want to have sex with my husband!?
Right now, I'm pregnant with our fourth child (second trimester/) A few months ago, I finished nursing number 3. Since summer of 07, I've been pregnant or breastfeeding. I know that that can have an effect on a woman's sex drive, but it has reached the point of complete disinterest. Sure, I'm tired, etc (from pregnancy) but there must be more to it. I really, REALLY don't want to have sex. At best, I find it a hassle. At worst, it grosses me out or makes me (secretly) cry (during!!) My husband's being really patient, but I know he wants to have sex. He assumes I'm just too tired, but I haven't told him how much I really just don't want to, even when I'm feeling great. Will this go away eventually? Does anyone else feel this way? Sex has always been more fun for him than me. Even in the beginning, when it was new and fresh and exciting....I had fun, but I've never orgasm-ed during sex (with him, or any man I've ever been with.) But I did once enjoy it. Why do I feel this way, and more importantly, what do I do about it?????? We're semi-adventurous and have had fun in the past "spicing things up," with costumes, toys, flavored stuff, etc (I won't go too TMI.) But nothing seems to help me now. He's the same as he always was. I'm still attracted to him. I just really, really, REALLY don't want to have sex. Please, help!!!

11 AnswersParenting1 decade agoVaccines and Autism (not the typical question)?
I am not saying vaccines cause Autism. I am not saying vaccines DON'T cause Autism. So, let's not turn this into that debate, because for now, there are no answers.
Here's what I want to know. Whatever the truth, the AAP is furiously trying to convince parents that vaccines do not cause Autism. Mothers who disagree are furiously trying to prove them wrong, by pointing out their children first showed signs of symptoms following their MMR shot. So, have there been any documented cases of Autism where the child received NO vaccines, ever? Surely there must be...right? And, if there are, why doesn't the AAP (or the media, or whomever) flaunt that around as evidence to make their point? You'd think they'd be all over that....right? Unless...there ARE no documented cases of children with Autism who never received a single vaccine in their lives.....?
8 AnswersToddler & Preschooler1 decade agoReally? That's what passes for too skinny these days?
I was just reading an article on a website about a girl who gets negative comments about her weight while at work. Others feel she's too skinny. She was complaining that it's totally unacceptable to call attention to an overweight individual's appearance, but some people feel entitled to make rude comments if the individual is on the other other end of the spectrum. I agree with this 100% and I've wondered about this myself many times. What's puzzling me, though, is that I don't find the poster to be shockingly thin, nor do I find the women who commented on the article to be so, either. The poster is 5'5'' and weighs 110. A lot of readers chimed in with, "I know how you feel!" stating their heights and weights: 5'3'' 115lbs; 5' 100lbs; 5'4 130lbs....etc.
Do you consider that to be incredibly skinny? I'm 5'5'' and 100lbs (well, when I'm not pregnant....right now I'm 18 weeks, 107 lbs) and while I know I'm not fat, I think I'm much closer to average than "too skinny." Thoughts? Opinions?

3 AnswersOther - Computers1 decade agoDo you believe in these so called myths?
Here's a couple things that have been supposedly disproved by scientific research. However, I've never seen the actual research, just heard that it's been done. And even with research, I still believe these things to be true. Your thoughts?
"myth" #1 Sugar makes kids hyperactive.
I firmly believe this one to be true. Aside from witnessing it, we all know that sugar gives you a burst of quick energy, followed by a crash. I read in a parenting magazine recently that maybe one reason parents think this to be true is because the kids are getting all wild and excited by the activity, rather than the food and drink. Like, if they're at a birthday party, it's not the cake and ice cream and candy, it's the excitement of the party. I call BS on this one. I've had my kids at boring events and if they have treats, they spaz out. On the other hand, I've had my kids at fun, exciting things that did not involve treats and they were appropriately behaved. (I've also had them at exciting events with treats where they were completely off the wall.) SO, this one I will continue to believe until someone can give my kids sugar and have it NOT make them bounce off the walls.
"myth" #2 Cutting/shaving hair will make it grow in thicker, darker and coarser.
I've seen this one to be true more times than I can count.
Conversely, there's one that I believe to be a myth that supposedly was proven TRUE by scientific research: Going out with wet hair in cold weather will make you sick/cold weather will make you sick. GERMS make you sick. I understand that cold weather can compromise your immunity to a SMALL extent, but cold weather does not directly make you sick.
So, two "myths" I think are true, and one "fact" I think is false. What do you guys think? Are there any other myths or facts that you question?

1 AnswerOther - Skin & Body1 decade agoQuestion about screenings at birth?
I'm not sure if this is a local thing or not, so maybe you haven't heard of it....Jim Kelly, the former Buffalo Bill, had a son born with Krabbe Leukodystrophy, which is an incurable, fatal disease. His son defied all odds and ended up living to the age of 8 (I think), though all his life he required extreme medical care. Because of this, Jim and his wife started the Hunter's Hope Foundation that raises money for this, and other diseases. They also are trying to make it a law to screen for all kinds of diseases at birth, and in one commercial on the radio, they mention how many lives this would save. Here's my question: say Hunter (the Kelly's son) had been screened at birth and tested positive for Krabbe Leukodystrophy....then what? Knowing sooner would not have changed anything.... How would screening for certain incurable diseases at birth make any difference? How would it save lives?
