  • Complimenting straight guys?

So, I'm bi and I like this (assuming to be) straight guy. He has a girlfriend, but I kind of "complimented" him without thinking. I told him " Hey, I think you're attractive by the way..Yes homo!". He walked by me without looking at me, making a noticeable face or saying anything. He was alone so I opened the door for him, and my friends were around.

Do you think this was rude? I'm pretty sure he heard me but I'm upset cause I didn't really get any reaction. Even if he said something homophobic, at least it would have helped me get "closure". He's built like a typical bisexual guy, and he does steroids..He humps other straight guys (sometimes strangers) around the school as a joke. I'm a freshman and he's a senior.

    Fake malachite, or real?

I recently bought this round bead, malachite bracelet at GreenEarth for around 7$. It doesn't seem to be cold to the touch or heavy, and once I emailed the shop, they claimed that it is indeed natural malachite, but it may be dyed.

What do you think? If it is fake, what actions should I take? I lost the receipt and sadly cannot return it.

  • Box turtle for adoption ; should I adopt? Is it being mistreated?

I volunteer at a local wildlife rehabilitation center, and I noticed that they have a few turtles that aren't been treated very well. One is a box turtle, and I feel like adopting it.

Currently, its in a 3' x 1' glass enclosure, fed a minute amount of dogfood and vegetables daily, and has newspaper, a hide and a very shallow tray of water in it. No heating, no lighting, no calcium supplements or anything.

I can provide it with either a 1' x 2', 1' x 2.5' ,or a 3' x 1' tupperware or glass enclosure. I have a heating pad, some daylight bulbs (not sure if they provide UVB) and substrate (bark and peat) ready.

I could provide it a varied diet, an outdoor enclosure during the summer and if needed, calcium supplements. Is there anything else I need? And is the enclosure size okay for during the cold months? (I'm in South-eastern ontario).

Should I adopt it, or leave it?

  • How many footcandles is this?

I'm growing orchids and I was wondering if any of these conditions are good enough...(1000 fc+ is what I need)..How many FC each are these scenarios?

I've tried different formulas only to get some numbers ranging from 100 fc to 14 000 fc, so I'm quite confused.

Scenario one ; two 24" fluorescent bulbs, with plants 5 inches below the lights.

The two bulbs are 2050 lumens total.

Scenario two ; two 48" fluorescent bulbs, plants ~6 inches below the lights..

Two bulbs are 5400 lumens in total.

  • What kind of bark do orchids need?

I was wondering if I would be able to harvest pine bark from a dead tree (the bark is soft, light-colored, and almost flat surfaced). Would boiling, microwaving, then hydrogen-peroxiding work, to sterilize it? Would that be okay?

Also, would it be okay to mix it in with peatmoss to grow carnivorous plants? (Nepenthes)

  • ID white leaved plant?

I don't have any photos (and won't for a few days, since it's raining and I'm busy..etc and I'll probably forget), but there is a plant growing in my yard that I'm interested in..

It seems to be invasive or introduced, as I have never seen it in the wild, and my neighbour also has it growing on their flowerbed as groundcover. It also somehow spread into our yard without purposing planting it.

It has a dark green rim to the leaves, and a white center..

The leaves remind me a bit of lemonbalm, and they are pretty small plants.

If I'm correct, they have little pink flowers, reminiscent of bugle flowers, although the flowering heads aren't that large.

Any ideas? I'm in zone 6 and it grows as a perennial.

And no, I can't ask my neighbours as they are away for a while.

  • 2000 lumens enough for orchids or carnivorous plants?

I'm currently growing Nepenthes ventricosa alone in a 20 gallon terrarium, by the windowsill..Since fall is coming, it gets around 2 hours of bright sunlight, and dim light for the rest of the day.

    I was thinking about either purchasing a single T12 (20 watts) or a two-bulb T12 (2010 lumens total)..

I was going to get daylight bulbs, but now since I may get orchids, it may not work out for flowering.

The plants would be elevated as much as possible, and the sides of the terrarium would be covered in reflective material to prevent light loss. Sunlight should still be able to come in.

The nepenthes seems fine (it's putting on new leaves, and it's green) but I've read online and most sites recommend 10 000 lumens for "low-light" orchids..

    I would want to grow the following ;

    Butterworts

    Sundews

    Nepenthes (maxima x talangensis)

Oncidium twinkle, phalaenopsis sp. and maybe Paph. venustum

Would my setup be fine, or would I need to purchase additional lights? Where do I get them?

(I've searched on Lowes, Home hardware, Canadian tire and Home depot for 24" fixtures and bulbs, but none of them carry matching fixtures and bulbs)

  • Artificial lights for carnivorous plants ; Help!?

I am currently growing Nepenthes ventricosa (tropical carnivorous plant) and I'm pretty confused..

It's growing well by the windowsill, but I was thinking about purchasing more plants (sundews, sarracenias..etc) and want to make a terrarium..

I have quite a few old aquariums, but don't have the lighting..

What kind of lights should I be looking for (on the cheaper side).?

  • Should I be worried? (Taking clindamycin)?

I'm 14 years old and after getting a filling, I noticed the tooth (and eventually the jaw, and ear) hurting (pretty bad). I went to my dentist this morning and gave me Clindamycin (150mg every 4 hours) for Trismus.

(I also only have one kidney ; ever since birth)

After reading all the side effects online, I'm becoming worried and I want to know with the dosage I'm taking, my age..etc, if I should be worried and things I can do.

  • Baby nestlings without nest?

I found two baby (not juvenile) birds in a bush crying..There wasn't a nest at all and they were slowly falling and getting stuck in the bush. There was a dead nestling right outside of the bush..

This bush was a very short hosta and there was no nest in it ; it looked like they were deposited in the direct center.

Long story short, we previously found a unused, fallen nest (no parasites, fecal sacs...etc in it) and moved the two living nestlings into it, and placed the nest into the bush.

We found a white egg a few inches away from the bush (behind it) but again, no nest.

A dead (adult) bird was nearby as well.

I'm just concerned and confused..Did I do the right thing? If not, what should I have done?

What do you think happened to these birds and what type are they?

We are going to be checking the birds for a few days to see if they are fed adequately, if there are even parents..etc

  • Is it normal not to feel sad?

My mother passed away when I was 5..Most people tell me "Oh my god, I'm so sorry"

But truth is, I don't feel much...

Is this some type of defense mechanism? I don't recall mourning (I have a foggy memory from when I was that age, though)..Would this be a repressed memory?

    Just confused..Is this normal?

  • How to monitor a gourd nestbox?

I bought this birdhouse from chapters ; http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/house-and-home/gifts...

I was wondering how I should monitor it (I.e. the inside of the nest, to make sure the are no house sparrows and to report data to nestwatch) without destroying it..

  • Is this normal (synesthesia)?

I think I might have synesthesia (OLP,to be specific) but I'm fairly confused..I tried to talk to my friend, but they thought I was trying to bathe in attention and told me to be quiet..

I feel words and letters, almost like a vibe...Kind of like an atmosphere, or like an emotion..Each feeling is difficult to explain into words, but I can kind of try..

I'm just confused because people always say things like "You look like an Aiden" or "Kim sounds like a girl name"..plus, I've noticed everybody seems to like the number 7, and I'm not sure why..Is it because they recognize 7 as the unique, cool and intelligent person he is..

  • What acne face wash should I use, and how often?

My dad bought three different acne washes..And each one of them says to use twice a day, and I'd rather not break out by washing 6 times a day..

    I have ;

OXY pads Triple action (prevents and eradicates acne)

Neutrogena Acne stress control; Power cream wash (to prevent acne)

    Neutrogena Redness soothing acne wash

I've read reviews, and I'm not sure..Both neutrogena products don't sound like they work (I've only used them once, but so far they make my face feel soft and fresh..not slightly dried up or anything,so I'm not sure it's working) but the Oxy kind of does, except it smells strongly of chemicals..

I know the two Neutrogenas are salycylic acid (last time I tried a salycylic acid based face wash, it didn't work..)

Anyway, what should I use, and how often?

  • Would this be considered synesthesia?

I attribute personalities to numbers, sometimes objects. However, I can't really put them into words sometimes and they don't affect my life that much.

    Examples :

8 is elegant, noble..kind of like royalty

    4 is modest and quiet

    1 is simple,analytical and boring

3 has a bit of an ego, but is mainly an underdog

Like I said, it's a feeling more complex than words, yet it barely affects my life.I don't avoid letters because of it, or think of them as horrible people..etc
