  • A Practical Use for Mathematical Proofs?

I can't seem to find any use for algebraic or geometric proofs, and Google doesn't seem to be able to bring up anything useful. Does anyone have an example of where proofs are needed?

  • How Much Electricity is Needed to Charge Magnet Wire?

I got a bit of magnet wire a few hours ago, but I have no way to test if it's actually working. I don't have an ohmmeter, so I decided to just hook it up to something and see if it gets any charge. I tried a D battery, and as I though, nothing happened. Do I need to try to plug it into an outlet or something?

P.S.- I have already burned the enamel off the ends of the wire.

  • What kind of Mac should I get?

I want to get something cheap because I just need a mac, and can't afford anything above $700. Don't go telling me to get an expensive one because I would be better off. It's just not an option.

  • Do I Need a Mac to Program iPhone and iPod Touch Apps?

Title pretty much explains it... I have experience in C++, the Cocoa API looks simple enough, and the Xcode framework looks easy enough to deal with. The possibility of purchasing a developers license rides on the answer to this question.

  • Kernel32 DLL Missing?

A few days a ago, I was using Firefox and clicked a link in a forums that I visit daily. Firefox froze up, and I was not able to x out of it, but I was able to minimize it and move the window around. After a few minutes, I decided that it was taking too long, so I pressed ctrl+alt+delete.... but I got an error message saying it was unavailable. I was unable to open any applications, so I restarted my computer by holding the power button- the option to turn off the computer from the start menu wasn't working either.

While it was loading Windows, I noticed that it was taking a long time- 15-20 minutes rather than the usual 30 seconds. After that wait time, I got the 'BSOD', and restarted my computer. After messing around with the scans, I ran it in safe mode and got multiple errors saying that registry files were missing. But the most disturbing one was a message saying that Windows couldn't find 'KERNEL32.DLL'. I understand what the Kernel is (somewhat), so I'm assuming that something was damaged when I clicked on that link.

How do I get the Kernel32 dll back? I have the Windows installation disk, but whenever I run it, it says that it can't access the only place I could put it, which was the 220GB hard drive that I'm guessing the DLL was in charge of. I don't have any backup disks since I got this laptop this Christmas, and didn't think that it would crash so soon. Would using a backup disk from my parent's computer work?

  • Dell Charger not Working?

Last night I was charging my laptop (DELL Inspiron 1525) for about half an hour, and noticed that my charger was REALLY hot. I didn't think that anything would happen, so I didn't do anything.

But sure enough, 15 minutes later, my computer just turns off (I don't mean that it runs the shut down scripts, I mean the screen just went black and I heard the fan slowing down) and my charger light turns off. I tried turning my laptop on again, but it wouldn't turn on, so I just waited for it to cool down. When it STILL didn't turn on, I took out the battery and put it back in, and it worked fine.

But the charger still isn't working right. I've plugged it into multiple outlets, which have worked for other appliances, and nothing happened. Every now and then the green light on the charger would turn on, but would then shut off a few minutes later. I've tried my brother's charger on the laptop, and it worked fine.

I'm not sure whether it's the conversion box (or whatever it's called, it's that black plastic thing) or the wire that plugs into it, but I can't check since I don't have any other chargers to try it out with. But I'm guessing it's that black box, and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do.

Is there anything I can try to get it working again? Or should I just go on Ebay (I'm not paying the full $40) and get a new one?

Note- The charger model is: PA-12 Family

  • Compiling in Visual C++ 2008?

I've been using Visual C++ for a few weeks now, and STILL haven't figured out how to get the compiler to work. I go to the Build tab, I click Compile, and... nothing happens. It says that the Build was successful, but I don't see the .exe file in any nearby folders, or in the 'Visual Studio 2008' folder. There IS an .exe file, but it must not be the correct one, since I get an error message saying nothing but '6', and then crashing.

Am I doing something wrong with the compiling, or am I just looking in the wrong areas?

  • How to Uninstall Visual Studio 9.0?

I've looked in all of the folders, but I can't seem to find any uninstallation program to get rid of my Trial version of VS 9. I couldn't find it by searching Google either, so I guess it's supposed to come with the package. I looked in the Program Files folder, and looked around in the Visual Studio folder... absolutely nothing (other than a program called 'Delete Temp').

So I can't find the uninstaller anywhere... any suggestions of getting rid of VS9?
