Need advice on first gun purchase?
My mom and I live in adjacent towns within the same township. It is a very nice, safe and expensive surburban neighborhood. Recently there has been a series of burglaries in my mom's neighborhood that got everyone on their toes. Also, I am expecting my first child later this year. As I was lying in bed one night, I thought about what would happen if someone suddenly breaks into my home and threatens my familiy. There is absolutely nothing I can do and that sense of helplessness prompted me to look into purchasing a handgun for protection.
I went to a local gun shop/shooting range. I tried and shot (first time ever) 9mm and 40cal Sig and Glock. I loved the feeling of shooting a gun. I can definitely see myself coming to the range in the future for some shooting sessions if/when I get my own gun.
However I do have some concerns and questions. What is the most practical first gun to own? I am leaning towards a Glock 17 or 19 9mm. I don't want to spend more than 500-600 USD on my first gun. (Please don't suggest any expensive ridiculous guns, just like you would not suggest a beginner driver to purchase a porsche as their first car). I also liked the USP and sig pistols. But they tend to be more expensive. What would you suggest?
My concern is that the ammo cost quite a bit of money and it goes so fast. I shot 100 rounds (approx $25) in less than 30 minutes. I imagine as I get more accustomed to shooting, I would go through more quicker. Is there any place I can get ammo cheaply (9mm)? I wouldn't mind buying them in bulk.
Side Note: As much as I enjoy shooting, I am against the legalization of firearms. I don't agree with the constitution on the freedom to bear arms as I feel that is misinterrepted and outdated. But my opinion on this matter does not trump the fact I will do anything to protect my family.
14 AnswersHunting9 years agoWhere are some good secluded areas to camp around the Tri-State area?
My friends and I like to camp whenever we can around the tri-state area. This means NY boarders, poconocs, S. Jersey. We usually end up talking and laughing around the fire until 1-2am. This can be a problem at family campgrounds where curfews are usually around 11pm. We don't cause any trouble or anything, just like to stay up and enjoy the crackle of the fire.
Last year, we were at Shenandoah Park in VA, and we found a place that rented out a secluded cabin in middle of the park. We had to park and walk about 1/2 mile before reaching our cabin. It was great, no one around us and it was very private.
I am looking for a similar place around this area. I live in Philly, anything within 2 hrs of driving I can handle. So far, I have been looking into Wharton State park in NJ as they have some primitive campsites. But I want to know what else is out there. Could N. Maryland have anything to offer?
We usually have 5-6 people in the group. We have 2 cars and will pitch tents. Don't mind walking to our site (within 1 mile or so of our car). Hookups, water, restroom, shower are not important, in fact we would prefer not having it due to the amount of people that will be around us due to this ammentity.
1 AnswerCamping1 decade agoAge old Question - is golf a sport?
I don't care what the dictionary says or how it defines sports in a literal sense. Here is a definition that I have heard which I think best defines a sporting event.
"Sport is an event that pits two or more parties that have directly influence over each other's performance. OR the individual is competing against a clock."
I am paraphrasing it, so don't nit-pick it but by this definition, golfers have no direct influence on each other's performance and not against a clock (not a precise one).
And the fact that hitting a ball that is not in motion doesn't help either. Lastly, it only displays one particular skill, which is to hit the ball with a club. Can you name another sport by the above definition that only displays one set of skills?
I know many people like golf and consider it a sport, is it an ego thing? Do people really believe that? People have different definitions, but seriously, compare it with the major sports like hockey, baseball, basketball, football, soccer, volleyball, tennis, track&fields, swimming, etc.. it just does not compare.

in my excel 2007, the column headers (A, B, C, D, etc...) are partially cutoff from the top at 100% zoom. Any idea on how to fix this?
2 AnswersSoftware1 decade agoHow to make webpage refresh itself?
Here is my problem. I am making a website, and when I transfer the html file to the server, my web browser does not recognize the new page unless I refresh the exact page.
Example:
I opened up xyz.com/index.html on my IE.
I decided to recode some of the things on index.html, then I upload it to the server.
I go back to xyz.com/index.html after the file has finished uploading and nothing has changed. Unless I press refresh or f5.
I do not want my web visitors to have the same problem as me. I dont remember having this problem on any of the other website I visit. If I goto yahoo.com, I don't need to press f5 everytime inorder to get the new contents.
What am i doing wrong? is it because I am visiting the website from same computer I use for making the html? Will my visitors have this problem as well?
