  • Would you buy this car, knowing it had been in a crash?

    It's a 2006 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V. It seems like a super nice car, and the test drive was pretty good. Everything looked fine, but then I ran an Autocheck on it, and it looks like it may have some frame/unibody damage? Is this worth looking at anymore, or should I run?

    They're asking $7950 for it.

  • Should I get a 2005 Ford Focus with 138,000 miles on it?

    It's a 2005 Ford Focus ZX4 SES with 138,933 miles on it. It'll be my first car, and I'm not looking for anything special. They're asking $4,495 for it.

    Is this a good deal? Is this car going to start falling apart right after I buy it? I plan on taking it down to my mechanic to have him look at it first.

  • Rate of change of a ladder (derivatives)?

    A 15-foot ladder is resting against the wall. The bottom is initially 10 feet away from

    the wall and is being pushed towards the wall at a rate of 1

    4 ft/sec. How fast is the

    top of the ladder moving up the wall 12 seconds after we start pushing?

    I know that I have dx/dt=-1/4 ft/sec And I know that I need dy/dt, but I can't figure out an equation to use.

  • Music to choreograph a waltz to?

    So my friend is going to choreograph a waltz for her ballroom class, but she needs some ideas for music.

    The only idea she has so far is to have to the guys in white suits (or white pants and a white shirt) and the girls long flowing white dresses. Then she wants to put it all in black light. :D

    She has two ideas for a theme. Either have the music be really creepy and the costumes be kind of tattered to look like ghosts, or have the music be such that it's like a dream.

    I'm not a dancer, so don't even know where to start here...

    Any ideas?

  • Multiply and add trig functions?

    The question I have is, "Find the exact value of tan(π/3) X sin(π/2) + cos(π)"

    What I did was find all the values of the trig functions then just multiply/add them.

    Here're the values I have:

    tan(π/3) = √3

    sin(π/2) = 1

    cos(π) = -1

    The answer I have is: (√3)-1

    Is that anywhere near right?

  • Need help with a physics formula?

    So I think I understand the physics just fine, I just can't solve the algebra. :D

    It's the formula:

    V=√[k/m(x initial² - x²)]

    The data I have is:

    m = .4

    k = 19.6

    x initial = .04

    V = .14

    Here is as far as I can get:

    .0196=19.6/.4(0.0016 - x²)

    I can't figure out how to solve for x.

    Can someone help me?

  • Question on Young's Modulus?

    Bone has a young's modulus of about 18 X 10^9 Pa. Under compression, it can withstand a stress of about 160 X 10^6 Pa before breaking. assume that a femur is 0.50 m long, and calculate the amount of compression this bone can withstand before breaking.

    I have the answer as 1.88 X 10^5 Pa, but I have no idea how to get it.

    So for my honors physics class, I have to build a Trebuchet that can throw a shotput at least 30m (~100 ft).

    And so far, I have... nothing. We went over them in class, so I know the basic principles on how they work, but when it comes to building, I got nothing.

    The nonuniform bar shown below is 5 meters long. It is denser near one end than near the other. It has a fixed pivot at 2.3 m from the heavy end. If the weight of the bar is 73.3 newtons and a 20 newton weight at 0.5 m from the light end will establish rotational equilibrium, what is the location of the bar's center of mass?

    I'm confused here....

  • Shifted Conic Sections & Completing The Square?

    I'm doing shifted conic sections in my math class right now. I'm understanding most of it, but I'm more than a little confused when it comes to the whole completing the square thing.

    Here's the problem I have, along with what I think the answers are:

    Sketch the graph of the equation. Identify the vertices, foci, and asymptotes, if any.

    2x²+6x+5y+10=0

    Here's what I have.

    It's a parabola that opens down

    Vertex: (-1.5,3.875)

    Focus: (-1.5,3.25)

    Asymptote: n/a

    If someone could first tell me if I'm right or wrong, then tell me how to do it (I think I'm wrong. :D), that would be great!

    A 45 kg girl is standing on a 150 kg plank. The plank, originally at rest, is free to slide on a frozen lake, which is a flat, frictionless surface. The girl begins to walk along the plank at a constant velocity of 1.5 m/s to the right relative to the plank.

    A) what is her velocity relative to the surface of the ice?

    B) What is the velocity of the plank relative to the surface of the ice?

    I'm confused. I'm pretty sure I'm doing it right, yet I'm getting the wrong answer.

    Here's what I'm doing:

    M(girl)=45kg

    M(plank)=150kg

    V(girl)[initial]=0

    V(plank)[initial]=0

    V(girl)[final]=1.5

    V(plank)[final]=?

    M(girl)V(girl)[initial] + M(plank)V(plank)[initial] = M(girl)V(girl)[final] + M(plank)V(plank)[final]

    So: 0 + 0 = (45)(1.50) + (150)(V)

    So: 0 = 67.5 + 150(V)

    So: 67.5 = -150(V)

    So: V = -.45 <- Final Plank velocity.

    So if the girl is moving 1.50 m/s, and the plank is moving -.45 m/s. Wouldn't her velocity relative to the ice be 1.50 - .45 = 1.05?

    Book answers:

    a) 1.15 m/s

    b) -0.346 m/s
