Independence (Statistics Theory)?
How do you know if something is statistically independent? I am having trouble finding information on this and I need to learn it for a test. My textbook does not do a great job explaining exactly what independence is in terms of statistics. Can anybody explain or provide a link to a good website on this?

After seeing numerous horses killed and injured, and many jockeys hurt, (sometimes fatal) in steeplechase racing I believe it should be banned or at least restricted in some way. The races can be so long (e.g 5600m) that the horses get tired and this is when many accidents happen. Maybe shorter distance races would reduce the number of accidents happening?
I am just wondering what other people have to say about this? I know it is a popular sport and the people involved are aware of the risk but surely something can be done to make it safer for the horses?

Can anybody tell me where I can find a good article on web design (particularly focusing on navigation, layout and graphics) or a free ebook to get information for a report I am doing? I was told Jakob Nielsen is good but I am struggling to find anything of his that is free to view. Any suggestions, links or help would be much appreciated!
