I'm new to linux and I'm using ubuntu. I tried playing dvd's using vlc and they won't play. No idea what I'm doing, could use some advice. I also have virtual box installed but I could't get the dvd to play on that either. It said I had no compatible players installed. Please help!

I'm 26 and I've been wanting to pursue a career in Social Work since I was in high school. All along I've had people telling me I would hate it, and it would emotionally cripple me. My husband has been deployed overseas for the pat 9 months and I'm a stay at home mom for now. So I've done alot of soul searching. I don't think I'll be happy career wise(I have a certification in medical coding and billing) if I don't become a social worker or do something in that field. How do you like your profession? Do you ever get bogged down and feel you want to quit? What is some advice for someone who wants to pursue this career?
