  • MFT at very end of memory- Will it be safe to use Linux to shrink the partition?

    I'm trying to install Ubuntu 12.10, but the problem is, Window's Master File Table (MFT) is located at the very end of the Window's partition (in front of about 300GB of free space). Paragon won't let me do a resize and Perfect Disk doesn't want to touch the MFT. Will it be safe to use the disk manager (GParted) to force Windows to shrink enough for the new operating system, or will the Master File Table not be preserved?

  • What is the derivative of 16te^-1?

    I assume it can be written as (16/e) * t, in which case, the answer is simply 16/e

    But the solution (velocity vector) must at some point be equal to 0, so it doesn't make sense to have a non-variable solution.

    Despite getting a 5 on that AP Biology test, I still don't really know the answer to this question. Does meiosis produce the sperm/ova, or does it begin with fertilization?

  • How to write a character with OCD?

    Does anyone have any tips for me writing a character with OCD? The severity of the disorder really depends on how it is implemented in the writing. This is a realistic fiction in a boarding school setting with a freshman girl being the one victimized by the disorder. I've set it up so that she has had some sort of rough past that can very flexibly be anything you can suggest, and she's not on track for making smart decisions due to impulsive decision making. Sprinkle some reservation and solitude onto her pessimistic shyness and you'll get exactly the character I'm aiming for.

    In other words, I'm asking for tips on how to display OCD in a girl with any past you deem fit with any habits you deem fit, and I'm making sure she's a lone wolf to a new boarding school setting. The more creative yet constructive, the more likely your advice will go into my book.

  • Where near Washington DC can one find a place like this?

    A place to shop for clothes and a casual food chain within walking distance that's not crowded.

    I'm writing realistic fiction taking place in this area but I myself haven't been there.

  • Why is this recursive Java method forming an infinite loop?

    The object is an ArrayList<E> type, if that helps.

    private void quickSort (int left, int right) {

    if(left==right||right==0)return;

    int i=left, j=right;

    E pivotValue=get((left+right)/2);

    while(i<j){

    while(get(i).compareTo(pivotValue)<0)i++;

    while(get(j).compareTo(pivotValue)>0)j--;

    if(i<=j){

    E temp = get(i);

    set(i,get(j));

    set(j,temp);

    i++; j--;

    }

    }

    quickSort(left, j); //This is the infinite loop

    quickSort(i, right);

    }

  • Should I set a frame story or have 2 separate ones?

    For my NaNoWriMo, I did a background story on the novel I had going since long before it. However, it only seems fit to insert this NaNoWriMo into the novel somewhere, either the beginning or middle. The problem is, even though it is vital to understanding the novel, it is 115 pages long, shorter than a standalone but far too long of a tangent. I would have to put in 50 pages of novel, 115 pages of the background, and then return to the original novel for another hundred pages. Any tips? How would you as the reader want a book like that organized?

    If you don't understand, think about the Star Wars series and how the two trios coincided.

  • How do I get Windows Updates to work/stop?

    Every time I shut down my computer, it says that it needs to install updates. When I boot it, it takes extra-long to configure the updates.

    When it is fully booted, it says it could not find the package, requesting that I give it a path from which the downloaded package has installed updates. The default path is "1" (I know, it doesn't make sense!), and I don't have any idea where to look, if at all, where to find this update.

    It does not install the updates then, but when new ones come out, they stockpile!!! I am currently at 24 updates that it tries to install every time i shut off the computer, and 24 updates it has to configure to boot, then it fails and I have to start all over again!

    How do I either get these updates to work so they don't have to waste so much time or simply stop installing themselves?

  • How can a fictional 12-year-old girl get from Colorado to Texas?

    I'm doing my NaNoWriMo (in other words writing a short novel quickly), and I need clever ways for a fictional character who is a 12 year old girl to run away from Colorado to Texas in a matter of at most a couple days. She can take someone with her should your clever idea call for it, but she as she is running away, and is only 12, she cannot use an airplane or her parents and she cannot drive.

    Most importantly, this cannot be a cliche method- it must not be an overdone method.

  • Which title best makes you want to read my book?

    I'm trying to come up with an ideal reader-grabber of audience 13 through 15 years old of both genders. If you fit in this age group, good! If not, I'd still like your help!

    I'm almost at the last stage of the story (Just the climactic finish followed by a post-climatic conclusion remain. Both are planned and outlined, so writing won't take very long), so a title is necessary. As you aren't supposed to know much about a story by a title, I'm going to simply tell you that sleep is an overlying theme in this story. The candidate titles are:

    "Apathetic Torpidity"

    "Down to the Top"

    "Lucid Hunter"

    -First option is a rather nerdy way of saying "Sleepy Sleep". This is the name of something important in the story but you don't learn what until about 3/4 of the way through

    -The second choice is a contradiction that you come to understand by reading the novel, sort of like a motif.

    -The third of the three is my Xbox LIVE Gamertag, so it means more to me sentimentally. If you want to know what it means, Google "Lucid Dream".

    As a cover art, the title and author (probably under the pen name Ender Delphiki) are likely to be located at the bottom. The image I like best is: a pair of emerald-framed glasses with a broken lens sit on the ground of an alpine forest. Lighting is night time.

    Based on that description and your favorite title of the 3, does this attract your attention to read more about this book?

  • Why are tons of people requesting to connect with me on Yahoo?

    I've never used the My Yahoo except to have an avatar image for my Answers! account. Thus no one has ever connected with me. I don't know anyone who uses it either. But within just today and yesterday I got 34 requests to be connected, just out of the blue by people I've never heard of. Is this some sort of spam thing?

  • Why doesn't this Java program set any numbers?

    I've narrowed the problem down to just this code, where it refuses to set the numbers right. This is the code in the Runner:

    Dice first=new Dice();

    first.roll();

    System.out.println(first.getNum());

    Here's the code in the Dice class:

    public Dice(){

    roll();

    }

    public int getNum() {

    return num;

    }

    public void roll(){

    num=(int)Math.random()*7;

    return;

    }

    Here's the output:

    0

    This is as close to the problem as I can get. It should be making a die and rolling it to its value. I had it roll again and it still doesn't do anything. What it should do is "roll" the die when it's made, then roll the die again. But it still remains 0.

  • Which of these your favorite programming joke?

    My AP Comp class likes to make witty programming jokes. But how about you? Which of these do you find funniest? (Or if these aren't good enough, suggest your own!) (Jokes are varying in language)

    1- while(!isAttentive)homework++;

    2- while(inClass)boring++;

    3- ("SELECT finger FROM hand WHERE id=`3`");

    4- die("Failed to give a damn.");

    5- echo "boo!";

    (if you don't understand these, you don't program enough)

  • How do you make a time lapse in a story?

    My story (more like a novel-in-making) has a time period where 5 months go by without a signficant event. However, I hate it when the book I'm reading simply says "5 months later". I want it to be a smoother transition, but since nothing of significant happens, it'd be useless to still write out the story over the 5 month period. This number is required- it cannot change.

    It's a transition from mid-April to September, in a contemporary high-school setting.

  • How do I further improve my writing (with sample)?

    I've taken a lot of the advice of some Y!A members last time, so this is like a "improve my writing V2". This I typed up about some of my day today, with minimal editing because I want to know what to look for in editing. I've got two questions:

    How can I improve my writing skills (without criticizing the actual story, which is true and thus doesn't need changing)?

    Do you really want to find out the answer to this "mystery"? (In other words, did you actually read it through to the end?)

    Here's the way-oversized sample, which despite length, I beg you to read:

    The bell rang, signaling the end of Pre-Calculus and the start of lunch. Normally I looked forward to a card game to play during lunch to pass the time, but this time was different. I will, regardless of the method, locate and recover my DS. Last I saw it, I had left it on the desk in Pre-Calc almost a week ago when a game of Dots distracted me from retrieving the game system. Inside the DS could be found Pokémon HeartGold version and LeafGreen version (yes, I play Pokémon and I’m 17). I was standing just west of Mahogany Town, ready to venture to the Shiny Gyarados… but that’s all irrelevant.

    Falling behind schedule due to the habitual side-tracking, I hurriedly gathered my binder, pencil, and calculator into my backpack and stormed out the door. The walk to the auditoria usually twisted along sidewalks, but those were just time-wasters. I simply cut across the grass between sidewalks. I recognized one of the tables as the one where Sammy could usually be found, but she likely hasn’t gotten to her spot quite yet. I knew she was at school today because she was there in AP Lang. Unmentioned to all, she drew my affection since the moment I set eyes on her- she had entered the school a week late, which was normally impossible. Coincidentally I too managed to do so back in seventh grade… but that’s all irrelevant.

    I hate side-tracking, I thought. It was completely counterproductive to take the shortcuts and side-track at the same time. By some miracle I found myself in the auditoria at long last. I tracked the first person who I would investigate: Chandon.

    I approached his table. I could see Drake already seated at a table nearby, impatient to start a card game. That would have to wait. To Chandon, I asked, “Chandon, do you have my DS.” This was stated in a firm, determined, and intimidating voice. Chandon knew from this how serious I’d become.

    “I told you, I don’t have it. Last I saw Skyler had it.”

    “But did you have it?”

    “Yes. I saw it and tried to chase you but I couldn’t find you. So I gave it to Skyler to give to you.”

    “Skyler says he gave it back to you, seeing how easily he loses things.”

    “Yeah he gave it back. I tried playing it a little but I got bored so I left it in Math.”

    “But you told me last time you saw it, Skyler had it.”

    “Exactly. We went in there during Flanhofer’s class because she was taking forever to come to class. I left there and Skyler stayed a bit. So Skyler had it last.”

    “It’s not exactly believable how you’re adding one more very important detail every time I ask a question.”

    “It’s true- ask Skyler. Or check the Counseling office.”

    “I went to the counseling office this morning, and all they did was give me an incident report form. Where is Skyler during lunch?”

    “He’s usually in the locker bay. Upstairs.”

    “I’ll be back.”

    I shifted directions to face the exit and left. The straight route through the grass took me by Sammy’s table. She’s there. One reason why I like her is that she’s like me- she’s got ‘wandering eyes’, meaning she’ll study her environment subconsciously while she does something else- sort of what I’m doing now. As it turned out, every time I looked at her, for the briefest of moments and for the whole time I’ve known her, our eyes met. Of course I’m the kind of guy who shies to all girls, so my affection isn’t obvious. Frankly no one really knows that I don’t like Chelsea, it just happens that Chelsea and Sammy are together every time I see either of them. Sammy’s shy too, and I’ve recently figured out, never had a boyfriend. This strikes me as odd- her usual clique is the group of girls who would kill themselves if they don’t have a boyfriend. Even stranger, she’s practically the most beautiful girl I’ve met- someone who shouldn’t have trouble getting a guy. Despite this, I learned earlier today that she originally planned on going to Homecoming, which was just two days ago, but when no one asked her, she felt it useless to go. Damnit- that would have been the perfect chance. Now, I interjected towards my own thoughts, was a good time to focus on the issue at hand.
