Totalitarianism and musicians?
Noting a rather patronizing aside I read in reply to a comment about Richard Strauss, I am inspired to ask: Were you offered a position of great musical honor within - and under the patronage of - a governmental regime that dictates repertoire and/or vets performing personnel for political suitability, would you accept?
You need not specify an actual historical situation, but I will add the constraint that the hypothetical government is assumed to be absolute enough that you cannot reasonably believe you will be able to "work for change within the system."
