  • Stocking a 75 gallon freshwater aquarium? Two HOB filters vs. one canister?

I'm currently cycling a 75 gallon lightly planted tank and planning out stocking options. I've done loads of research and understand the compatibility between these fish and how to keep them together peacefully when it comes to tank size, school size, hiding places, territory etc. I also know that in a few years I will need to move several of the fish species up to a larger tank as they will get too big for the 75. I know which fish I want, I'm just figuring out the right amount of numbers. Here is what I'm working with:

    2 Dwarf Gouramis

    8 Tiger Barbs

    8 Cherry Barbs

    8 Cardinal Tetras

    5 Clown Loach

    1 Red Tail Shark

1 Bristlenose Pleco or a couple Oto Cats (or both, depending on how the algae gets)

And eventually 1 Black Ghost Knife

I'd like to keep the schools on the larger size (no less than 6 each) as it'll hopefully deter the shark and the gouramis from messing with the smaller fish. The loaches, the shark and the knife will be moved into a 125g+ tank as they get larger.

I was also wondering about filter options. I know that a canister is the best choice for larger tanks but I'm hoping that two HOBs can do the job well. The Aquaclear 110 and the Aquaclear 70. Together it'll be at least 800gph. Could I possibly only need just the 110? Or would adding the 70 be a better choice with this stock load? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Best leg boots to use on endurance and trail horse?

I'm looking for a pair of boots for my OTTB and was wondering which type of boots would be best. We ride 25, 30+ miles a day through various terrain, mostly consisting of mountain ranges, rocks and desert. I need something that'll provide long term support for the lower legs, without creating too much heat and will protect from shock while galloping over hard ground and maneuvering through rocky areas. I hear splint boots may be my best choice, but I don't know if they will provide enough support for the ankle etc. Would the general Professional Choice boots work or would those create too much heat?

I know that you can lock individual messages but I was wondering if there was any way or any apps that would allow me to lock the entire thread. I have several thousand messages between this one person and I and I don't want them getting accidentally deleted. Please if anyone has any idea it would be awesome. Thanks

  • The REAL difference between Wildlife Ecology and Wildlife Biology?

I have scoured the internet looking for the difference between these two fields and everything that I have come across fails at differentiating the two. Even though it may have two separate explanations, both descriptions are practically identical. I'm going into college as a freshman this fall and am interested in majoring in Wildlife Biology with a minor in Zoology, but a lot of the colleges I've been looking at only offer Wildlife Ecology. Can someone please tell me the REAL difference between the two, however small it may be, and what those differences mean in regards to career opportunities etc. Also, is it possible to major in wildlife bio/eco with a minor in zoology? What I want to do is work with Rehab/Rescue/Release centers in Africa, or with sanctuaries that work with breeding and re-releasing endangered/threatened species. Please any help would be immensely appreciated.

  • Length of Half Chaps?

I've recently taken up English (I've been doing dressage and jumping lessons for the past several months) and have been looking around for a nice pair of half chaps. I've found a couple that interest me but one thing I was wondering about was the length of them. Almost all of the ones that I've tried on have gone to up pretty much my knee. Are there different preferences to how it should go? Because most of the half chaps that I've seen riders wear usually end several inches before it hits the knee.

  • Double Major Questions?

I'm going into College soon and I've come to the conclusion that I want to double major in Archeology and Zoology. All I know is that I can't chose between the two and I want to do each equally. What exactly does this entail other than the fact that I'm going for two degrees? I hear it's easier when the two degrees are related, but these aren't. Can anyone give me any info on; how much work is involved, if it's even feasible with two unrelated areas, money, time in school etc Anything would be immensely appreciated.

  • Good calming supplement?

What are some effective calming supplements for hot horses? I've tried OralX Calm and Cool, which works for my other horses but not for my mare. She's EXTREMELY hot and I really need something to calm her down. And please don't suggest more training or harder rides. I do 30+ miles rides through mountains and she never tires, or calms down, regardless of what I do. Can someone please help me?

  • Hauling a horse for the first time?

I've been training my four year old BLM Mustang, getting her ready to send to the trainer and all that's left is trailer training. I've gotten her to point where she can walk in and stand there tied, (with another horse) with the door closed for about an hour, without any problems. Now we just have to actually haul the trailer with her in it but I'm worried that the moment the trailer begins to move, she'll start panicking, pull and hurt herself. Can someone please tell me the best way to work with this stage and get her use to it? I know the first time you actually haul it's gotta be short and smooth, and that's another thing; to get out of our yard you have to make a somewhat of a sharp turn and drive up a hill on rough, gravel road. This worries me as well because getting use to being hauled in the trailer and getting use to big bumps, dips, roughness etc are two different things. And we can't do hauling first and roughness second, she would have to get use to both of them at the same time.. And I don't want to start without knowing exactly what i can do. Please can anyone help me? Oh and PS: The trailer is a six horse stock

  • What to mix in with grain and supplement so horse can't separate the two?

I've been feeding Farnam's Weight Builder to my horses for a while, which (for those of you who don't know) comes in a powder that you mix with the gain. And these last couple nights I've realized that one of my horses started sifting it out and just eating the grain, leaving the expensive supplement behind. Does anyone know some ways that I could make the supplement "stick" to the grain? Or at least make it nearly impossible for him to filter it out? I've tried applesauce, molasses etc but to do that constantly would be really expensive and I'd have to use a lot of it each feeding. I need something cheap, effective and something that I don't have to use a lot of. Any suggestions would be help

  • Going from jumping saddle to dressage?

So i've been doing hunter/jumper for the last couple years and I wanted to try something new so in a couple of day I'm going to have my first dressage lesson. I was wondering though, how is riding in a dressage saddle different than a close contact jumper saddle? I know the the saddle and your position is obviously different but how is your movement different? I hear that you don't really post in a dressage saddle? And with cantering I'm told you sit deeply into it, like on your back pockets pretty much. Things like this etc.

  • Final stages of trailer training?

So my filly can load and unload in the trailer and stand in it quietly but I haven't moved to the next step of attaching the butt strap and tying her up. It's a straight load that offers lots of light and it's claustrophobic but I'm nervous that if i do tie her up and put on the butt strap she'll spook and end up hurting herself. And she tie's amazing, i just don't want her panicking when she realizes she can't get out or anything. Does anyone have any advice on how to proceed further and keep the risk of spook/injury at a low? Anything would be greatly appreciated. : )

  • Sports Boots? All four or front or back?

I do endurance on my 9 year old mustang and its pretty intense. Running full speed, insane trotting and rigorous loping through sagebrush, trees, dried river beds etc. We work in mountains and rocks and varying terrain with a lot of hills and short, steep gullies etc.She has absolutely AMAZING footing and rock solid hooves and doesn't clip herself or anything. Im getting the Classic Legacy Sports Boots for her but I don't know if i should a set of four, or boots for just her front feet or back feet. What do you guys think?

  • Advance western, beginner English? What do I say?

So I've always ridden western and if i have to classify myself I've been told by several horse trainers and instructors that i'm advanced. But I've been looking for places to learn to jump and i thinki have found one place that looks good. But i was wondering when they ask me what level am i at.. what do i say? i've retrained an OTTB and have broken two BLM Mustangs, plus riding tons of green horses but all of this was done either bareback or in a western saddle. I don't want to say beginner because then they may think that i know nothing about riding/working horses etc, when i do. But then again should i say beginner because i'm new to English riding and those techniques/methods? (I've jumped bareback before but it wasn't anything exciting, just fulling around and stuff. I know that as nothing to do with levels cause anyone can do that) What should i say? Also, what qualifies one as a beginner? what makes them different than an intermediate, advanced etc?
