  • How do you address a cover letter if you're unsure if it's a man or woman?

I don't want to write, "To whom it may concern" since I have the person's name, but it's foreign and I'm not sure if it's a man or woman. Is there a proper way to address it?

  • Is my landlord breaching contract by entering without notice?

I received a note under the door saying that the management would be showing our apartment "starting in 2 days" and listed the hours during which showings could occur. I have a copy of the Chicago Landlord/Tenant Ordinance, saying a landlord must give 2 days notice before entering the apartment. They began showing our apartment a few days later, but provided only 30 minutes notice, via phone voicemail (which I didn't even receive until after the showing because I was in class).

I called to complain, saying that I was supposed to receive 2 days notice before a showing. The management argued that the letter under the door was the notice, even though it gives them free reign to enter the apartment whenever they want during the listed hours with little to no notice, and will continue to do so until the apartment is rented or until we move out in September.

I'm very uncomfortable having people in the apartment when I am not there, but they gave me no notice. Is this a contract breach?

  • Can I change the locks on someone still paying rent?

One of my roommates moved out due to irreconcilable differences, but kept the keys. He agreed to keep paying rent until we find someone else to move in. Our management company does not allow "subleasing" and therefore, his name will still be on the lease until it expires in September, even if we get a new roommate. He refuses to give up the keys because his name is on the lease, but it will remain that way anyways so I'm considering changing the locks. Frankly, I don't want him having access to our apartment because I don't trust him at all and there are times when there is no one in the apartment to keep an eye on it. Can I legally change the locks on him, while he is still paying rent? I know it's a long shot, but I'm afraid of what he could do to the place while we're not here. We live in Chicago if this helps.

  • What's the best type of window fan?

My roommates and I are holding off on getting an AC window unit until next spring. In the meantime, I'm looking for a cheap window fan (preferably filtering). I don't need the reversible function. Any recommendations?

  • Where can I find a privacy curtain that isn't wall mounted?

I'm moving into an apartment and I want a curtain to divide the larger room into two separate areas. Since I can't drill holes into the wall, are there products available that don't need wall mounts to hang a curtain?
