  • Need novel idea on how to display crochet threads?

We just converted a spare bedroom into a sewing room. Hubby bought me a nice large oak table for a cutting table. I have all my sewing threads displayed on the wall behind my machine; on wooden plaques (using dowels), and a small house shaped hanging that has little shelves.

Now, I need a novel way to arrange 2 big sacks of crochet thread(knitting worsted and cottons). I'd love to have them in bins on the wall or something. Anyone have any good ideas?

  • Question about Java not working?

I am unable to play Pogo games because of Java. Yep, I've enabled everything, cleaned all files and cache- except Java cache. After last reinstall (Yep, I uninstalled all old copies first) I went to JAva site to test, and got the same thing. A window opens saying the site wants permission to proceed. This is the same Java window that pops up in the games. I cannot click run, because when I try, the cursor chases the window all over the the screen. It moves around and will not let me click in it. Any answers?

I have uninstalled and reinstalled so many times, it's not funny.

The reason I have not cleared the Java cache is because when I go to control panel and open Java, the panel will not let me click to change anything- it is also froze!

  • Heart surgery valve question?

I have not been on lately due to doctor visits, etc. I saw cardiac surgeon yesterday, and am awaiting call about admission for heart cath and surgery the next day to replace atrial valve.

Wondering if any of you have had to make this choice? I could have posted this in the medical section, but figured seniors would best answer in this category.

I am considering the pros and cons of tissue valve vs mechanical valve, at my age; I am 65. I have looked at all the dietary restrictions with coumadin use, etc. The main thing is I would hate to live to 80 or so, and have to go through this again with tissue valve.

Some sites say it is only good for 8 years or so, with best time 15-20. One site showed decline in funtion after 5 years. the surgeon told us 10-20. He said if I were 10 years younger, he would recommend mechanical valve.

I am so confused, and not sure which one is best for me. Of course my family will respect my wishes, but daughter says mechanical. I have considered quality vs quantity of life.

I am a Christian, and am trying to hold to my belief. Please give me some input, and remember me in your prayers.

Also, I might add, other than the normal aches and pains of being 65, I have no other health problems.

  • What do you think was the real reason Ann Curry was demoted?

It really came with no warning. I did enjoy watching her sometimes. She seemed so down to Earth. Do you think it had anything to do with ratings or was she just a scape goat to give a younger lady the edge?

  • Why was the question pulled?

Earlier today I answered a question that simply said "stuffing recipe". There were only 2 answers, when I got an email that I had best answer. When I went to read all the comments, the message simply said the question had been pulled.

I was aggravating to me, as I took a lot of time typing my answer (not the best typist nor the fastest) and I saw nothing to make me think it was anything other than a legitimate question. Did I miss something? It also said it violated the community guidelines (?).

  • Are you a SS who grew up doing a lot of canning?

We have an over abundance of veggies, and I have been freezing them. This year I canned some of our tomatoes and would love to can some peas. My pressure canner lid is missing, so it got me to thinking. When I was a child, all my aunts and grandmothers canned all their vegetables, and even meats using the hot water bath method, as most of them would have been scared of a pressure canner even if they'd had one.

Please don't give me the lecture about non acid food contamination and how it's not safe. Believe me, I was born and bred a country girl, and know the dangers if it is not processed long enough. I also know the dangers of botulism and all that. Aside from that, I also know that somewhere there is someone who remembers this and can tell me how long to process things like peas and butter beans and corn.

I realize I could have placed this in the foods section, but don't think I would have gotten anything but the usual lectures on food safety. BTW, I am a retired nurse of over 25 years, and am well aware of nutritional guidelines. TIA for your help. If nothing else, maybe I will spark a few treasured memories!

  • Have you ever used Ball Pickle Crisp Granules?

I have always made my pickles using Mrs. Wages Pickling Lime. Hubby brought home the Ball product, as he could not find Mrs. Wages at WalMart. Of course he had to make another trip to a different store to get it, as I was afraid to mess with success !

The package says it replaces the lime soak, but I just am not sure, according to the directions on the box, that it is a chance I want to take. I have always been very satisfied with the recipe for Cucumber Lime Pickles from Mrs. Wages.

Have any of you ever used this product?

Thank you in advance to anyone answering.

  • What could be wrong with computer?

New computer- less than 3 mo old. Love to play Pogo, but lately I have issues with lots of the games, my entire computer is so slow to download sites/games, etc. I cleaned temporary files and java cache. Made sure I have latest java installed. Ran an extra scan/defrag on puter. I even dumped some of the programs I had installed. Nothing seems to help. What else can I try? Sometimes it won't connect, and will tell me my modem is not connecting, and I have to unplug and wait 10 sec before starting again, but that doesn't speed it up either. When I first got it it was very fast changing programs/windows. It is a HP Pavilion desk top. I tried every test my gaming site suggested, and that doesn't help either, so it makes me think it is in my puter. I have Norton virus protection and it shows no problems and is up to date.

  • Do you drink Starbucks? did you know..?

Starbucks to stop using 'crushed bug' dye

    Published: 4/19/12, 2:38 PM EDT

NEW YORK (AP) — Starbucks Corp. says it will stop using a red dye in its drinks that is derived from crushed bugs.

The Seattle-based coffee chain said in a blog post on its website that it made the decision to reformulate its drinks after feedback from consumers prompted a "thorough" evaluation.

The company says it will swap out cochineal extract, which is made from the juice of a tiny beetle, and instead use lycopene, a tomato-based extract.

Cochineal dye is widely used in foods and cosmetics products such as lipstick, yogurt and shampoo. Starbucks had used the coloring in its strawberry flavored mixed drinks and foods like the raspberry swirl cake and red velvet whoopie pie.

The company says the items will be reformulated by the end of June.

Along with an inflated price, this is just one more good reason I'm glad I make my own coffee. Why would anyone choose to use bug juice rather than a natural vegetable derivitive anyway? Wonder if the bug juice was just cheaper!

  • Question about harvesting shallots..?

Our shallots are about 6-7 inches high now. This is our first time growing them. I know we can trim the tops and use them, but what about the bulbs themselves? Do you, at any time, remove just a few of them, like you would a multiplying onion, or do you have to remove the entire clump? Also, do you need to wait until they have brown foliage before digging the bulbs for use?

Thank you all for answers. ( Southernmost Alabama here)

  • How do I stop these folks from sending emails?

Every day I am bombarded with emails from every Dick, Jane and Sally with an address of bonusslice.com. I started out just "sweeping"them on my email program. Then when that didn't work, I looked up their web site and added my name to the list to stop further emails.

They said on the site it might take 48-72 hours to take effect. It's been over a week, and I'm still getting them. Some of the most stupid names you've ever heard of, of course with bonusslice on the end. TIA for any help.

  • Should I roll over or not?

I have a 401k from a former employee that I've just left since leaving the company over 2 years ago. I rather enjoy checking the gains/losses each day. It does not offer a withdrawal option other than closing out the account or rolling to IRA. I have made pretty fair interest on this. Would it be in my best interest to roll over or leave it alone? All the info re penalties for early withdrawals and age limits has me confused.

  • Why won't puter recognize printer?

Just got a new computer. Both it and printer are HP. There are 2 printers listed in computer. Both say HP Officejet J6400 Series. One copy I downloaded myself, trying to find the right printer. Neither works. My printer is J6480 All-In-One. Is this the same as a 6400 series? I can copy things fine, so I don't think there is a problem with the printer. What can I do. The computer will say, "Preparing to print", but it does nothing after that. TIA for any suggestions I went to the HP site, and found no J6480 to download to the computer? We have checked and rechecked all the lines and everything is connected.

  • Question about cotton crochet thread?

I have 2 cones of cotton thread and have used it in the past to make dish cloths. I would like a pattern to make something different. I went to the site "Peaches and Cream" that makes the thread, but it was no help. Any ideas:? How would it be if I used it to make a tablecloth-would it be too thick? TIA for any answers.

  • Question about asparagus plants..?

We planted 2 year old plants 2 years ago; 12 of them. I have had several real spindly sprouts come up this year, so far, and one really thick reddish sprout. We planted Jersey Giant plants. Should I harvest the one thick sprout and when can I expect more?

I live on the Alabama coastline.

We have added some mulch, and also planted 12 more plants this year.

  • Is anyone else missing large macaroni?

The macaroni they are selling in the stores says large on the bags....it is no where near what I've always bought for my macaroni and cheese. It's about 1/2 the size. None of the stores have it any more. What happened? Do any of you remember the really big kind. The cheese got all in it when you cooked it, and seems like it got softer too.
