  • Aging a hog?

Looking for information on how to age a hog in a cooler with ice. I've been talking to a variety of people and keep getting different ideas, wrap it in plastic, don't wrap it, put it directly on ice, put a tray in so the carcass is kept above the ice, etc, etc. I want to keep the carcass whole to roast it on a spit. I do not have access to a walk in cooler or old fridge. Any one have advice, or should I just not bother with it? Thanks.

  • preparing feral hog for a spit?

I'm a fan of feral hogs for their meat, but we've never done one whole on a spit. The big question is this: should it be skinned or should we shave the hair off, the way stock swine are prepared. Also, if anyone has tips of preparation (soaking in brine, etc) please let me know. Reccomendations would be greatly appreciated.

  • Aging deer meat?

I've heard some folks talking about aging deer meat for a few days before final processing makes it taste better.

Never tried, looking for opinions, I know we do this with beef.

If aging is a good idea any ideas on how to do it? I lack access to a meat cooler/locker, I was thinking pack the meat in ice in a cooler, draining water, adding ice on a daily basis, but what to pack it in to prevent that "slimy" feel that meat in plastic always seems to get?

    any thoughts would be appreciated.

I love deer as it is, but always get complaints about gamey-ness from a few folks.

  • Question over plowing preferences?

I'm running a JD 5325 4wd its about 65 hp. So far its been used exclusively for blading, shredding, and loader work.

I'm interested in plowing up land for seasonal deer plots, and also just to break compaction so native grasses can come back.

So here's the question: what type/size would be the best option? chisel/disc, etc, etc....

also anyone have any idea as to prices for these used?

I just haven't had time to look around and talk to the folks here, figured some of y'all might have useful info, thanks.

  • Seasonal Deer Plot Advice?

Well, deer season's coming up, usually I stalk hunt, never feeder hunt. I've been doing wildlife mangagment at school, and kind of like the idea of trying a feed plot.

I know its late to start season starts 3 Nov 07. But do y`all think it could be done with results this season.

I'm planning on chisiling a 1 acre plot and broadcastng seed. I have a "deer forage mix" which states to be fast germinating.

Any other ideas for plants? wheat maybe?

I'm not necessarily doing this to hunt off of, but more as an experiment to see if these plots really attract the deer.

Are there also mineral supplements/blocks that could be tried in conjunction with the field. The field is situated bordered by a creek, and heavy mesquite, with a cedar elm mott, so there is a pretty good edge effect, and I've seen trails here often before. Should I try this, or am I just screwing up a good situation? Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Question about the Gordian/ horsehair worm?

I know they are found in crickets, and by some means or another have the crickets jump into water, so that they may exit the cricket. My question is, if a gordian worm infested cricket is eaten by an animal, lets say a dog or chicken, can the worm spread to that animal? or is it host specific? thanks

  • At what age can you tell if chickens are hens or roosters? (Barred Rock Plymouth)?

They are a few (5?) months old and so far look completely alike (size, growth of comb, etc.)

If hens when do they start laying?
