  • Formal vs. Informal Belt Tests... your opinoin?

i have been doing Judo for a year and about 5 months into it i got Yellow belt, that was 7 months ago, and just a few days ago, out of no where, sensei awards me Orange. no one in the Dojo knew except him that he was doing this. he sent in the forms and papers and what not to get it registered and i am now Orange (Yellow, Orange, Green, Brown, Black)

i heard that back in the 60's era this was the ONLY way it was done. that you never asked or cared and your sensei promoted you as he felt necessary. which way do you think is better? a formal test, or and informal, observational testing? and why (other than money and convienience) has the testing become formal?

    thoughts and opinions greatly appreciated

  • Your "go to" move in the streets?

if you were to be attacked the next time you go out what would be the first move you attempt to stop the attack or give yourself the room/time to escape?

i am a (half-way decent) Judoka and i would have to say my Tokui waza is Tai Otoshi or Sumi Gaeshi but in the street, i would try for Tai Otoshi. Reason- very low risk, moderate reward

PS. i know theres different times for different things and it's based on how you're attacked, where, when, why, etc. but say you were attacked in general the move you would try first to end the confrontation the fastest

  • What is the reason for kata? What are they intended to be used for?

i heard katas are supposed to be simulated fights kind of but how do you know how a fight would pan out? how do you know when, in this fight, you would need to block and when to strike etc. like what if your opponent kicked and you blocked a punch?

i am NOT bashing kata. i just don't know what they are for. thanks in advance
