  • Gourami died of weird illness?

I brought home two coral blue dwarf gourami the other day, and I noticed a small gold spot appear on their backs. I didn't think much of it as it was not raised or anything. Then the next morning the gold has spread to cover the entire back half of their bodies, and it appeared as though they were paralyzed where the gold discolouration was. They died about an hour later.

This happened exactly the same to both gouramis, and they died at the same time. Could this be an infection, or disease? Would it be caused by water quality? And would it be from my tank (130L, heated, filtered, pH neutral) or from the aquarium?

    Thank you!

  • Bristlenose catfish breeding and genetics?

Today I found that my female gold BN has moved into my male peppermint BN's cave. I was not expecting them to breed, and unfortunately I have no spare tank. They are in a 30 gallon community tank. Will the fry be completely wiped out by my other fish when they hatch, or will some survive to adulthood?

Im also curious about colour genetics - what colours can I expect from this pairing, and is there any cases of co-dominance with bristlenose genotypes and phenotypes?

    Thank you!

  • Suitable live plants for a 15 gallon?

I've never had much luck with live plants. I use fertilisers, correct lighting and make sure im putting in as little oxygen into the tank as possible, but I've only ever been able to keep staghorn java fern alive for more than a month.

I'm getting a 15 gallon tank for my university dorm in a month or so, and I want to use live plants for the female bettas I'll be keeping. Are there any plants that are hardy and easy to grow? And do you have any tips for aquarium plant growing?

    Thanks!

  • Female betta won't eat?

I brought home two female bettas which are in a 5 gallon heated aquarium that is split with a divider that allows water to flow through. One female is a very good eater, but the other won't even bother with food. I've tried bloodworm, pellet and dried blackworm and none are eaten. I've had her for about 4 days, and apart from the eating issue she's been very healthy. Anything I can try to get her to eat? Her stomach isn't showing any signs of starving.

  • Setting up a community 130L tank?

My 130 tank has already been running for over a year, and I'm looking for a bit of change in my fish and design of the tank. I currently have one bristlenose, 5 black phantom tetras and one molly, the other fish I have already rehomed. It is run on a canister filter, and kept at 24 degrees celcius.

However, I'm looking for a change. It currently has black gravel as substrate, and one piece of driftwood and a few scattered plants. I'm looking to create a heavily planted tank, and I was wondering what plants are good for creating a nice aquascape?

Now, about the fish, what are a good selection of bottom, mid range and top level fish that are both colourful and lively? I'm quite keen on getting a selection of guppies or balloon mollies. What other interesting fish can I put in this tank that do well in a heavily planted tank?

Any other suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks!

  • Two cockatiels fighting! Advice needed urgently?

I recently purchased a large cage for two cockatiels (approximately 30.5in long, 32in high, and 18in wide).

I originally had one cockatiel, a 6 year old male (Flash). However, he became wild and aggressive towards people so the amount of time out of the cage he had was limited. So I decided to buy him a big cage and another cockatiel for companionship and he often calls out to wild birds flying past. I bought the new cockatiel (an unsexed, 3 month old pied cockatiel) who was already bigger than my original cockatiel home the same time I brought home the cage. They were put in seperate cages for a few hours, and the cages were next to each other. That night I put them in the cage together.

At first they just ignored each other, then my original male went up to the new bird and began whistling and talking to it. At first the new bird was a little wary, occasionally snapping at Flash but nothing more.

However, Flash became quite aggressive to the new bird over the next two days, and today I noticed that she has blood on her wings and a little bit on her foot, and I know Flash has been causing damage to her. He only attacks her when she comes near him, however. Will she heal properly on her own? The blood does not seem to be coming from the wing itself, but from the feathers.

Is there anything I can do? They were moved into the new cage at the same time, so it couldn't be territorial behaviour, could it? I'm just worried I'm going to have to put one back into one of my smaller cages, which I don't think is very fair.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help.

  • How to control temperature in an experiment?

For a science experiment I am testing how different temperature affect the germination of seeds. This experiment will span over a period of days to weeks, and I will need to keep the seeds at a constant temperature the entire time.

I want to have one sample at a cold temperature, one at room temperature and one at a warm temperature. Any ideas on how I can manage this?

  • Care for a Rainforest Scorpion?

I'm fairly keen on owning a rainforest scorpion, and there's some things I'm not sure about.

    1. When feeding live food (crickets, mealworms etc) can you put in extra and allow the scorpion to eat as it pleases? Or should you only put in the food it will eat in that sitting?

    2. How long should the tank be?

    3. Can you keep more than one in the same terrarium?

    4. I live in Australia, and it is currently summer, will I need a heat light or mat? If not, what about during winter?

    5. How would I go about handling the scorpion to change the substrate?

    6. How can you protect your scorpion against mites?

Any other extra care tips would be appreciated, thanks guys!

  • Tips for putting on weight?

My boyfriend really struggles to put on weight, although he does everything he should do.

He eats 6 full meals a day, little or no deep fried or fast foods, works out at the gym multiple times a week, and is quite healthy. However, even with all this, he still only weighs about 59kg, and is 170cm tall.

Is there anything he could be doing to cause him to not put on weight, or is it just metabolism?

  • What should I do before using a semi-permanent colour on my hair?

I'm going to use a Rich Burgundy 8 wash semi-permanent hair dye on my hair. My hair is quite thick, curly, and long.

The packet says to use two or more for long or thick hair, should I use two or three?

When it says "towel dry" how dry should it be?

Should I shampoo and condition my hair before dying it? The box says to wash it beforehand, does this include conditioning?

When I'm rinsing out the colour, should it be rinsed until the water runs clear? Because last time I did that I washed out all the colour in one go.

Any other tips would be helpful, thanks!

  • Unexplained damaged caudal fins?

I have recently added 2 small fantails to my large 3 foot coldwater tank. Aside from these two, there is only one other goldfish in the tank.

However, the morning after I bought the fantails home, I noticed the caudal fins on both fish appeared torn and damaged.

I don't know how this happened; the tank is bare as it is moving soon, it is running off of a large sponge filter for the time being (I am upgrading as soon as the tank moves) and an airstone creating a line of bubbles along the back side of the tank.

There is also one small fire tail gudgeon in the tank from the previous occupant, a crayfish. Do gudgeons eat the fins of other fish? Could it be the reason for the damaged goldfish?

If you have any ideas as to why this has happened, that would be great :)

    Thanks for helping!

  • 80 litre classroom tank stocking suggestions?

I have recently set up an 80 litre long aquarium for my biology classroom at school.

I am stuck on what fish/invertebrates to stock it with safely, however. My first ideas were shrimp and gouramis, but that was quickly dismissed. I would like a combination of bottom dwellers, schooling fish and larger, pretty fish to be a centre display.

I am also wondering, would a crayfish be suitable in this tank? It is about 2 1/2 feet long, and a foot wide and about 15 inches deep.

The tank is fitted with river rocks, a sponge filter, air stone, and a heater set at 28 degrees celcius. It will be put through a nitrogen cycle before putting fish in.

What would be some good fish to put in? Remember that the biology classroom is fairly noisy, so fish that are stressed by noise will not be good options.

  • My Angelfish are behaving oddly, please help?

This has only started happening recently, so it's not a recurring symptom.

I have two black marble angelfish, both bought at the same time at the same age, and they are about 5 months old. They are both approximately 5 inches from top to bottom.

They are currently in a 2 1/2 foot x 1 1/2 foot, 35 gallon tank. They have weekly water changes and are fed every 1-2 days, depending on how much I fed them the night before. They share the tank with some black phantom tetras, and some corydoras catfish, and the tank is planted with a wide varitey of broad and thin leaved plants.

However, just the other day, they started hanging around each other more often, facing each other and nipping each other on the mouth.

Is this behaviour a sign of aggression, or courtship? Are they hungry, should I feed them more? If you have any insight to their behaviour, please let me know!

    Thank you!

  • Keeping Black Moors! Need answers!?

Ok, I already have one 30 gallon tank, and wanted to invest in another. I've always been interested in goldfish, mainly because so many people kill theirs within a week or so (myself included when I was an ignorant child), so I wanted to prove to myself, and all my family and friends, that a goldfish CAN live over 5 years with the right care. I particuarly was after 3 black moors, or similar species of goldfish (like panda moors)

So I have these questions, try to answer as many as you can!

    1. What size tank would I need? (I was looking at a 3ft tank, about 40 gal.)

    2. How would I go about decorating it? (I love heavily planted tanks, but I've heard that they'll just eat it all)

    3. What and how do I feed them? (When I was younger, I had a black moor in a 2 gallon tank, I know, shame on me, but he would NEVER eat! So I thought in such a big tank for baby moors they wouldnt get enough food...)

    4. Is it POSSIBLE to keep them at higher temperatures? I've heard that higher temps aid in immune systems, as long as there is still enough oxygen in the water.

    5. How big do they get and how long would it tank for them to reach this size?

    6. Health and safety tips?

Anything else you want to add!

    THANK YOU!

  • How many Oscars would fit in this size tank?

I'm considering purchasing a new tank. The one i have in mind is 4ft long, 2ft high, and either 18" or 2ft wide. The full volume is about 90 gallons, but taking off gravel and room for the filters, it would be about 70-80 gallons.

I've always been very interested in oscars, and would like to have some. However, I'm not sure whether two adult oscars could fit in this size tank. Also, does sex matter? Will two males live as happily together as two females or a male and a female?

If two can't fit, i'm happy with just one. But if you can, can I have some good care tips for oscars? Also, what is the best way to decorate an oscar tank? I like plants, but I've heard they will be destroyed.

    Thanks for everyone's help!

  • Can I keep a Jack Russell cross with two cats?

I am wanting to adopt this Jack Russell cross Mini Foxy. He is approximately one year old, possibly younger or older, and has grown up around kittens, but has never actually interacted with them.

From what I've seen of him, he's very friendly and gentle, and quite clever.

Unfortunately, I already have 2 cats (One 6 year old male, and a 3 year old female) and a one 8 year old male dog (Poodle x Shi Tzu x Fox terrier)

The dog can fend for himself and the cats themselves are quite powerful fighters. (The male cat especially is quite large for a cat)

So, is this a good idea? Should I adopt this dog? Will he attack and/or injure my other animals?

    Thank you for helping!

  • Problems with my PH! Help!?

Ok, i got a new tank for my birthday. I've filled it, installed a heater, installed a canister filter, added gravel, added some wisteria and bacopa plants, and now the only thing left is to fix the PH.

The gravel I had is very fine, and unfortunately I didn't clean it enough, and it spiked my PH up to 7.6-8.0.

I did 3 water changes, and that didnt help. So I bought some PH down, and added it to the water. In two days the PH had dropped to 6.8, but now it's somehow gone back up to 7.8!

Can anyone suggest the reason as to why this happened, or how I can fix it?

Oh, there's no fish in there, just to make sure. And I need the PH at 6.8-7.0.

    Thank you!

  • What will I need to cycle a tank?

I've just received my first BIG aquarium... I've kept tanks for smaller fish like Bettas, but I've never cycled a tank before.

So, I was wondering, it's completely bare except for lights. What will I need to cycle the tank? It's 30 gallons, and will eventually hold Angelfish, Rummy Nose Tetras and Corydoras Catfish.

Also, will normal tapwater harm plants in the same way it will harm fish? Because for the first time filling the tank I wanted to fill it up, then add the water conditioner. I was wondering if this process will injure my plants (That I will be getting)

Thanks!! Oh, and if you could, could you give me a website on cycling tanks or just some tips yourself?

  • Keeping rummy nose tetra?

I am planning to buy 7-10 rummy nose tetra for my 40 gallon aquarium, it isn't set up yet, but I'm planning to moderately plant it with live plants, use an aerator, powerful filter, the water at 26 degrees celcius, and I will also perform a fishless cycle.

However, I have read that rummy nose tetras are VERY susceptible to death within the first 2 weeks of bringing them home.

Can anyone suggest any tactics to keep my rummy nose healthy and happy until they settle down? Anything helps! Thank you!

  • What are good angelfish tankmates?

I'm getting a 40 gallon aquarium for my birthday, its over 40cm tall, so I wanted to get a pair of angelfish.

BUT, if I had room, what other fish could go in with the angelfish?

Please list what fish they are, and how many I'd need to get. Thanks!
