  • ESSAY REVISION PLEASE?!?

In the book ‘The 10pm Question’ by Kate De Goldi, Sydney Vickerman plays the role of the new girl, who has had more than her share of unfortunate events because of her beloved mother - Freya’s ongoing quest to find her true self has had a huge impact on the way Sydney is today. Along with having to deal with her mother’s difficult ways, Sydney is also forced to look after her two younger twin sisters Galway and Calcutta twenty-four-seven. She is more than just an ordinary 11 year old girl as Sydney captivates the reader’s imagination with her amazingly non-conformist, curious and altruist personality.

Throughout the novel it is evident that Sydney chooses to not conform in the typical acts of her fellow female classmates. An example of this is shown in chapter two of ‘The 10pm Question’ when Sydney is described in the point of view of her peer, Frankie Parsons:

Sydney seemed oblivious to rules of the Browyn Baxter sort. She marched to a different drum… She was an independent operator… making friends with a boy in the class rather than all the girls.

    - Page 41 , paragraph 4

This suggests that Sydney likes to challenge the set gender based rules and the current ‘trend’of her classmates. She expresses her individuality with a carefree attitude; not caring in the world whether people approve or not. She’s comfortable in her own skin and is not afraid to do what makes her happy. She dares to not fall into the stereotypical category.

One other trait of Sydney, is her vast interest in just about anything. A phrase that shows this characteristic best is found in this passage:

Sydney was an insatianable questioner; a steady stream issued from her mouth the entire time… She had a bottomless bag of queries about everything and everyone…

    - Page 62, paragraph 3

The paragraph is basically saying that Sydney is awfully curious in affairs or concepts she is not familiar with and her urge to understand is immense. Her natural motive of asking questions is a factor to why she is mature beyond her years.

Another unique trait that makes Sydney superior to other people in her age group is that she is beyond the epitomy of what a big sister is. Sydney is selflessly devoted in the welfare of her younger sisters and has their best interest at heart. Her love for her siblings is ubiquitously shown, such as:

Frankie sighed. “… But she doesn’t want to leave Galway and Calcutta. And if she says stuff about her mother they could get taken off her, her sisters – put in foster homes. She’s scared about all that.”

    - Page 165, paragraph 6

“It’s their favourite game,” said Sydney. “It keeps them happy for hours.” She sounded fond and indulgent, like an actual mother…

    - Page 187, paragraph 2

Sydney’s attentiveness to the needs and safety of her younger sisters in the novel is credible to Freya’s absent presence in the field of parenthood. As years have gone withouth the help of her father, Theo Vickerman, Sydney is contracted to mature on her own; it became a vital neccessity for the benefit of herself and others. Another reason to why Sydney’s altruism has come about is her sense or feeling of responsibility to make sure that her sister won’t have to go through what she did.

Eleven year old Sydney Vickerman should be embedded in the minds of the readers of ‘The 10pm Question’ as a perfect person or example to look up to. To not be afraid of being an original; not a copy, to be curious and openminded; in the words of Albert Einstein, ‘I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.’; and be aware of other people’s feelings is what exactly a great leader is and that is Sydney Corcoran Vickerman to everyone; a great leader.

  • Ballon Science Experiment. HEEEEELP!!!?

I need help with the experiment: Here's the method.

    Flask

    Measuring Cylinder

    Bunsen Burner

    Tripod

    Balloon

so basically you fill up the flask with water on different values, then you place the balloon on the mouth of the flask. After you light up the bunsen burner and place it under the flask. then you use a stopwatch to count how long it takes for the balloon to rise.

So does bigger amount of water = lesser time for ballon to rise

or is it the other way around?

    Tongs

    Water

  • School Problems. Please Help.?

    Here's The Story:

So me and my classmates were talking and then the boy sitting opposite me asked what masturbating is. So they started talking about it except me (It made me feel really uncomfortable). Then the topic of Michael Jackson came up. So the two boys were saying how he molested kids and all these racial comments and other mean stuff. The other boy then started to "role play" of what the kids would say when MJ was molesting them. (It was really disturbing)

I got all angry at what they said and then I started to cry.

They were trying to say sorry and asking what they did wrong.

But then I said SHUT THE F*** UP! and everybody in my classroom heard. Even the class next door.

I also made a huge scene when I was crying.

    Now everyone knows.

Should I tell the teacher and do I seem like an idiot?
