i noticed it a couple of days ago. having trouble streaming music and everything else is dragging. i disabled a couple of add-ons and one plug-in but firefox is still using 99-100% of cpu. how can i fix this?

i bought a Seagate external hard drive to backup to. it seemed to slow my computer way down so i uninstalled all the junk that came with it. it was running all the time. i deleted everything out of the drive so it is totally empty.

when i try to use windows backup utility, it says to put in a floppy which i don't have. i only have a dvd/cd drive.

my question is; can i backup to this external hard drive and how to do it?

i only have three years experience in using computers (all in windows). i just recently got ubuntu and i am having a hard time trying to learn it. i have a couple of sites that have tutorials but i'm still confused. i need tutoring starting at the kindergarten level, i guess. anyone got any suggestions. links would be appreciated. thanks.

i want to learn to use linux. i am a total beginner. i would like info and suggestions as to getting it and running it on my windows xp machine.

i want to set my power scheme to : always on ,never, never, never but it keeps changing back to the monitor shutting off in 20 minutes.. it won't let me save the power scheme.i have tried setting this in the built-in admin account but it still reverts back. when i try to save, it says that two settings are conflicting and cannot save the configuration. anyone know how to remedy this? thanks.

it has been dragging for about a week or so. it takes 2 minutes for firefox to open and everything else runs just as slow. task manager says that the cpu usage is 100% all the time with "system" using 94%-100% and all of the rest of the 53 processes using 00%. also it is using 147,096 K of memory.

i use avg 2011 with firewall and periodically scan with ad-aware free so i don't think it's a virus.

i had a problem about two months ago with the plastic bracket that secures the heat sink/fan to the cpu. the clips that it uses just broke off and let dangle down. i didn't realize it until it started shutting the power off and after a few times and i took a look inside. i got it replaced and it seemed to work ok until it started running slow.

i'm just wondering if the cpu is damaged or if it could be something else.any ideas? thanks.

i have gotten a couple of contact requests from unknown and i was wondering how they got my id and if it's safe to accept requests from unknown.

i was going to run a scan with malwarebytes last week and a dialog box popped up asking if i would like to try the full version for a limited time. i agreed and it was downloaded. since then, i get a warning that malwarebytes has blocked something from connecting to a suspected malicious website; type: outgoing.this happens more than once a day, every day. it is always the same ip number. i assume that this means that a program on my system is trying to connect to a website on the internet ( i did a whois and it indicated that the ip was in germany ). is this a false positive or is this ET trying to phone home? i would appreciate any information to help me understand what is going on here. thanks.

about two weeks ago, my computer suddenly lost power. no warnings, no errors. just completely lost power. i would restart and it would run a couple of minutes and lose power again. i opened the box up and the heat sink and fan were dangling. the plastic tip that the top clip mounted to was broken off. i had the mounting bracket turned around at a computer shop and remounted. i took it home, restarted it and all was well for about a week. then i heard the other clips on the bottom snap off and i found them laying on the bottom of the case. i managed to get the heat sink clipped to the mounting screws that are slightly protruding from where the plastic tips broke off. it seems to be pretty solidly attached, but the power has gone off twice today.

does anyone know what made the tips break and does this have anything to do with the loss of power?

any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. thanks.

a couple of days ago, it started idling rough but smoothed out. this morning it started but it began idling rough again and then died and won't start. it turns over good and fires a little but dies. any ideas what is the problem?

why is frostwire and other similar sites still running if downloading free music is illegal?

i like classic rock and roll and blues and have paid for it in the form of vinyl, tape and cds (lost, borrowed and not returned, or stolen through the years).

i don't want to start copying and selling music. just want to listen to an extensive library while i work at my computer.

are there any free, legal, and safe sites to do so? i don't download anything because of the laws.

my daughter has a refurbished vista computer that didn't come with with the disk to reformat. she has an administrator account and 5 limited accounts, 2 of them are used by a 9 year old boy and a 13 year old girl.

she is using firefox and has avg free and malwarebytes and it is set up to defrag automatically.

any suggestions what to do to speed it up and to remove any virus/malware that may have slipped in?
