  • Ethics Question?

I have found info that implies that a person (who is being searched for at Yahoo Answers and was thought to be alive) died in 2001. Should I publicly post what I have found? (The info itself is considered public since it was in a newspaper and is in the SSDI.)

I will not use private email or messaging.

On the one hand, I think the person has a right to know, but on the other this is a less than ideal way to find this out, to say the least. I also have no way of knowing this person's mental state.

    Please help me to decide.

PS I am posting this here since we often get these search requests and I believe we should all consider this...

  • Rules re: Private Information vs. Public Information?

I've been answering questions (i.e., for people looking for lost friends & relatives) under the impression that info that is available via PUBLIC RECORDS (via free online city, county, or state databases) is OK to use. People could just get the info themselves, but they just don't know where to look -- I do. If info is not available via public records, then I consider it private. However, I keep reading other answers that say that NOTHING about living individuals is allowed. Is this true? What's the criteria? I don't want to break any rules!
