  • Why do people all of a sudden think it's OK to discriminate against certain groups?

Recently in Sydney there was a riot by Muslims protesting a video entitled "Innocence of Muslims." Now the popular opinion is that we should be banning Muslim immigration, or deporting any Muslims who protest. As an atheist, I generally don't give a sh*t about offending religions people, however to me this isn't about offence, its about the fact that it seems Ok to express views like this in the mainstream media, and for them to have an overwhelming amount of support!

What kind of country would we be if we excluded people based on their beliefs? If we banned protests? The vocal view in the media is that "we don't want them coming over here and making Australia like their countries." Well guess what, what makes us different from these countries is the fact that we ALLOW peaceful protest, and that we DON'T discriminate based on religion. Yes of course we need to be harsh on those who commit or incite violence - by charging them with the crimes they commit, not by discriminating against everyone.

  • Never had to buy winter clothes before, what do I need for a trip to England?

I come from Far North Queensland (Australia) and with daytime temperatures that don't get below about 20 degrees C, I have honestly never had to have any winter clothes. Now I'm heading over to England at the end of this month and have no idea what kind of clothes someone my age is supposed to wear (never been particularly good at fashion lol.) Will Jeans and a coat cut it or am I going to freeze my **** off lol?

Edit: By "My age" I mean 21. And I'm a man, if you cant get that from my DP...

  • If you could travel faster than light, could you also travel back in time?

For example, the light that is reaching us from the sun left the surface around 8 minutes ago. So if you were to travel faster than light to the sun and back in only 14 minutes, then you would be two minutes further back in time than if you had not gone anywhere at all...

^^This seems to make sense in my mind, could someone please tell me whether or not I'm a gibbering idiot...thanks :)

  • Anyone know anything about the Dutch system of nobility?

My family is one of the listed noble families of the Netherlands, but being Australian, and not speaking Dutch, I really don't know anything about it... I am the oldest son, of the oldest son, of the youngest son of a Baron, not that that actually means anything these days lol.

Also, as far as I am aware, if I felt that way inclined (and I promise you, I don't) I could use the honorific "Jonkheer". - How does that work? How far down the line can people use that? It stands to reason that if you go far enough back, just about everyone is related in some way to nobility?

Anyway, if you have any information more than that which is on wikipedia I would be quite interested.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Why is it that everyone thinks us Aussies actually drink Fosters?

    XXXX (Tastes like cat piss)

VB (Tastes like watered down cat piss)

Carlton Draught (Only tastes a bit like cat piss)

Tooheys (almost completely cat piss free)

    James Squire (mmmmmmmmm...heritage....)

Boags (Rather expensive, and somewhat Tasmanian, but on the plus side, feline urine free)

    Cascade (see Boags above)

^^^They are acceptable Aussie beers for you to use in your stereotypes, have fun.

    Regards, Australia

  • Should pseudoskeptic/skeppies and groups be sued for libel and slander?

I just thought this question should be asked again without people being blocked... Nosey's idea of debating is quite similar to her idea of scientific evidence, ignore anything that doesn't agree with you and if all else fails, lie.

It might be a great idea for Homeopathic Associations to sue the skeppie cults for media and internet libel and slander as a deterrent. It did a world of good for the Chiropractors.

"They can't justify their ranting and raving and just plain lie about the scientific and clinical evidence base that really exists."

"Not that people in the real world outside of their cult actually buys any of their propaganda, but isn't it time the Homeopathic Associations sued them as a deterrant? "

Maybe you can add copyright infringement now nosey.

  • Is there a single condition that homoeopathy won't cure?

Every single question on here gets answered by thenoseknows saying that whatever the problem, homoeopathy will cure it. Is there a limit to this, or would the entire world become free of disease if we just gave all our money to homoeopaths?

If water has memory, and the more diluted the concentration the more "potent" it is, and assuming that the molecules in a single glass of water most likely have come in contact with just about every conceivable chemical at some stage, why do people get sick at all? Surely they are being effectively cured of every disease every time they drink a glass of water.
