  • reverse proxy for windows?

I am looking for a lightweight program that can do reverse proxy for windows.

I have Everything (search program) that shares my hard drive over http with user and pass. I also have hfs (http file system) that does almost the same thing. I need to use https to login. My friend who is a linux guy says I need reverse proxy server so that I can forward port 443 to my local port 80 which is the file server and then when I browse to https://www.myserver.com/ it forwards packets to my program over https.

    Any suggestions ?

  • Difference between $100 and $400 tripod of same brand?

OK I understand that you wouldn't put your $2000 camera gear on a cheap $20 tripod, but brands like Manfrotto can have different range in prices from $50 to over $500. I would like to know the difference between a 100 dollar Manfrotto tripod and a say 300 to 400 dollar one. Apart from maybe being lighter due to carbon fiber instead of aluminum, and say a head that can do a few more moves than a normal head. Does the more expensive tripod vibrate less ? how much less really ?

  • which Xperia Android phone for my Mom ?

    There are 3 choices,

    SonyEricsson Xperia Neo

    SonyEricsson Xperia Ray

    SonyEricsson Xperia Arc S

Arc S being the most expensive, the other two same price,

I was thinking about Neo, until I saw the thickness...

Anyone here have Neo and can tell me how good/bad it is ? Is the thickness a real issue ?

  • Can I install SL6WS CPU instead of SL6GQ ?

I have an old IBM ThinkCentre A30 computer with Intel 845GL Northbridge. It had a SL6GQ CPU (2 GHz Socket 478 Bus 400) and I want to upgrade it to an SL6WS (2.6 GHz Socket 478 Bus 800) would it support it ? I cannot find the system datasheet online.

  • Is there a website where people share obsolete computing parts for free/cheap ?

Some forum where people share older computer parts for next to nothing. Not somewhere where people are still trying to make $$$$'s from a Pentium 3 motherboard or Pentium 4 socket 478 CPU's

there used to be a website called obsoletecomputing years ago but that's down.

  • 3.6 GHz Single Core vs 1.8 GHz Dual Core?

I am building a medium level game machine with:

Asus P5KPL-VM Mainboard with LGA 775 Socket, stock fan

    2 GB DDR2 RAM

    Geforce 8800 GT 512MB PCI-E

    Windows XP SP3 / Win7 SP1

I have a choice of either a single core P4 with 1 MB cache and 800 MHz bus, or dual core E2160 which also has 1 MB cache and 800 MHz bus. Which is better ? I know that some applications such as Winrar work better with faster single core because on a double core they just utilize 100% of one core. For games I think they work better on dual core. What do you think ?

Also, I think the dual core can be overclocked much more than the single core can be, is this right ?

  • Need expert advice on CPU/Motherboard: dead ?

Hi, I am an IT technician with 8+ years experience troubleshooting PCs, if you are a 12 yr old kid who wants to give a one line answer, move on kid!

I have a mainboard and CPU which I don't know if it's working OK or not.

    Motherboard: MSI MS-7125 ver2.0, AMD Socket 939

    CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800

When I connect everything up (RAM, VGA, Power) it turns on by itself and CPU/VGA fans spins full speed. No beeps, no screen, nothing. my VGA and RAM are working on other computers. So it's either CPU or Motherboard. Question is, which one ? I don't have access to other CPU/Mainboard so I cannot test them. Is there any way I could know ?

  • Low bandwidth voice chat software needed?

My mother connects to the internet via 33.6 kbps modem and I have a 30 Mbit internet. I really need a low bandwidth voice chat software that works both in XP (hers) and Win7 (mine). Most low bandwidth software are at least 10 years old and either do not work, or I cannot find them. It would also be an advantage if the software is under 3 mb so she can download it easily.

Any ideas anyone ? Skype cannot work under low bandwidth. Google talk is better but still it's not as good as it could. After a few sentences it stops.

When I watch videos bright areas of people's faces are either tinted with purple or green. I have been a nVidia user since 1999 I never had any problems like this. Is this "normal" with ATI cards ?!

  • ATI Radeon HD 6850 Driver won't install, Win7 x32?

After years and years being an avid nVidia fan, I decided it was time to give AMD/ATI a try. I upgraded from my XFX Geforce 8800 GT to ASUS EAH6850 only to find that none of the drivers will install. All applications install without problem, Asus smartdoctor, catalyst manager and so on, but neither ASUS's own driver on CD, nor the latest driver from Asus's driver support, nor AMD's driver support install. I get the message:

    Application install: Install package failure!

Windows 7 Professional 32 Bit SP1, all patches installed

Mainboard is ECS 945GCT-M2/1333 (v1.0A), 4 GB RAM

Could this be because my mainboard does not support PCI-Express 2.1, just 2.0 ? I thought VGA's were backwards compatible with 2.0

    This is the error message:

  • Tips needed on buying a wide TFT LCD monitor.?

My monitor died suddenly and I would like to buy a monitor replacement. I had the Samsung 940B with 8ms refresh and TN panel. I don't mind buying a TN board again but with 2-5 ms refresh. The resolutions I have been looking at are 1680x1050 and 1920x1080 (Full HD ?)

I have a few questions and need some tips on buying these wide monitors. The web reviews I have been looking at are from 2008/9

    1) Does anyone have experience with 2 ms and 5 ms monitors ? do you see a noticeable difference ?

    2) Does anyone have experience with 250 cd/m² monitors ? is it too dim in daylight ? I would like a 300 cd/m² monitor but does it make *that* much of a difference ? Most LED screens are 250.

    3) I know Philips, Samsung and LG make their own panels. Are BenQ, Acer, Lenovo, Fujitsu monitors any good or depends on the model ?

    4) Can you recommend me a website or two that has user ratings over products such as LCD monitors ? (English websites pls)

What things should I look for when buying a monitor ?

Thanks in advance. Elaborated answers help more.

  • 2424 MB memory limit on Asus F9F?

I have upgraded my memory on Asus F9F. I had a 2 GB DDR2 PC2-5300 memory and I added a 1 GB DDR2 PC2-6400. Now in CPU-Z it shows Dual channel memory 3072 MB running at 333 MHz (PC-5300) but in BIOS it shows 2424 MB memory and in Windows 7 x32 it says 2.3 GB in use from 3 GB memory. I understand that Windows 32 bit doesnt support more than 3.4 GB RAM, but why 2.3 GB out of 3 GB ? Would x64 solve this ? What about the BIOS limit ? Why is this there in the first place ?

  • A question about morality / ethics?

A friend has stolen a bicycle a few months back and left it to another person to do anything with it. I have just found out about the nature of the bike when another friend said he's going to use it from now on. When I voiced my disagreements over this, and suggested the bike must be returned to the police, I was opposed saying the bike was left to this "person" and it was "their decision whether or not to keep the stolen bike. I then said that if this person was not going to give it to the police to hopefully find its rightful owner, I would do so. I was then bombarded by a wave of disagreement and attacks on my personality and my own ethics by 6 others for the fact that it was not "my concern" to decide and interfere with it and that the person who had it given to was responsible to make this decision, and that the original owner should not have left their bike unlocked, and thus easy to steal !

I would like to discuss and ask everyone's opinions whether my actions were wrong or right. I believe if an item is stolen, I must ask the owner to hand it over to the police. If not, I will take my own actions that it will be returned to the police.

While almost everyone agreed that stealing is not good, none other than me believed the bike should be returned to the police because "it was already here and the owner *probably* would have gotten another bike anyways or he/she would not be looking for it anymore etc etc".

  • How do I run a web server with 2 websites with different DNS names ?

I have a webserver running: Abyss from aprelium.com and I have Dynamic DNS so for example something.dyndns.org points to my web server. How do I make it so that somethingelse.dyndns.net points to a website I am hosting as well (on the same IP), but to a different folder for example that has a whole different website on it, like how the major web site hosts do. Some web hosts run multiple websites on single IP.

  • Geforce 8800 GT running at 98 degrees celcius, too hot ?

I have an XFX Geforce 8800 GT Alpha Dog edition. It's overclocked in factory, only to about 10%. It's about 2½ years old. I was looking at the normal temperature the other day and it was 67 degrees Celsius, 153 Fahrenheit. I thought it should be about 50 Celsius/122 Fahrenheit. So I ran FurMark and watched the temperature rise to 98 Celsius/208 Fahrenheit with the fan too loud.

The question: Is this normal ? I had recently cleaned the fan grills and taken dust/hair out, is it possible that there's still some more left in ? It does not seem to be easy to take the cover off to clean the fan. What are my options, apart from buying another VGA card ?

Should I open the fan, take the heatsink off and re-apply some silicone gel to it ?

    Any help is much appreciated.
