I love working with my dogs. I love training them, teaching them and learning from them. Get out, go play. Even if you don't feel like it, it only takes a moment before your own joy matches theirs. Remember, your dog loves you unconditionally. Do your best to be as good as they think you are. You want a better dog? Then be a better human.

  • Did you guys see that HartzPets is now a Y!A Knowledge Partner?

Here I was, just hanging out in the Dog Section, and lo and behold, HartzPets is listed as now active as a Knowledge Partner. I nearly choked on my coffee. Have there been improvements in their products? Opinions?

  • Crab legs... what is better? snow vs. king?

Hi folks! So, I'm from the pacific northwest, so dungeness is our crab of choice. However, I somehow managed to just discover snow crab, and I'm in love! I want to try the king crab as well, but I'm afraid I'll be disappointed? I was reading about snow crab, it they used to be tossed back because they didn't have any value or desirability, but that has changed. I love the texture and sweetness of snow crab - but it's a lot of work for little yield. If I go for king crab, am I going to be disappointed? What's your opinion and recommendations on the world of crab legs?

  • Complications with anesthesia?

So, we've all been told that there is always a risk when putting a dog (or a human for that matter) under anesthesia. I've signed the waiver myself at the vets office many times. Although I know that the risk is there, no one I know, or none of my own pets have suffered fatal consequences due to anesthesia. Long story short, I helped an acquaintance find a new home for her deceased mother's 2 year old German Shepherd (no one in the family wished to take care of the dog). The new owners just called me, and informed me that he passed away during his neuter surgery due to complications with anesthesia. I feel sad, guilty, and horrible. I didn't step up to be this dog's voice, and help him transition to his new forever home, only to have that forever be a few days followed by death. How common is anesthesia related deaths? Has it happened to any of you? I know some breeds are much more susceptible to complications. Anyone?

  • Dog Owners: Did you get what you were hoping for?

Maybe you were looking for a family pet. Maybe a dog you could show. Maybe you wanted a dog for competitive dog sports. Maybe you wanted to be able to do therapy work. Have you acquired a pet that couldn't achieve what you were hoping for?

I know I have. My beautiful Aussie (pictured with my handsome border collie) was a brave and confident pup, only to end up being chemically imbalanced, reactive, fearful dog. Thankfully I have the tools and knowledge to help her have a happy and healthy life, but I had hoped for a dog I could play at flyball and agility with. Instead, with her countenance, I had to change my ambitions. We herd sheep (noncompetitive) and she has a real gift for it and shows such joy. She ended up opening my eyes to a world I never would have experienced, and although sometimes I look upon her with disappointment, I love and cherish her with no regrets. Anyone have similar stories?

  • Fast Food Survey? How often is your order wrong?

How frequently do you think a fast food place messes up your order? IE, wrong soda, something not "removed" something strange added, no dipping sauce, etc?

I don't roll through fast food all that frequently, but I'd say up to 50% of the time, something is wrong. Is it rocket science? I've worked in food service, and I know it REALLY isn't all that hard...

  • Have you ever been denied by a rescue organization?

I know I've seen the question before, and my original answer was no. I was just denied to rescue a dog. The reason? I couldn't make the 3.5 (each way) trip by Saturday. I was then notified that the pup in question would be adopted out to someone else prior to my being able to pick him up. And this is AFTER approving my application.

I know others have gone through the same things. Have you been denied? Why? Share your story.

  • Can you "BYB"--and do it right?

If you have two dogs in your pack, who are AKC registered, from solid lines with full known pedigrees, tested clear of genetic defect, and earned their champion titles in working ability or conformation, adhere to stringent breed standards, including personality and skills--if you bred them--oh in your back yard--with contracts, and buyers lined up, a breeding mentor (or two, one from where each of the dogs came from) and a vet in your back pocket, wouldn't you be doing everything right?

If you ask me, you can breed on a smaller scale, and still do everything you can to improve the breed. And definitely produce some wonderful and sound pups. Ideas?

  • Sims 3 Gameplay Problems?

    Hello,

I've been surfing around the Sims 3 forums, but there's SO much there, I'm not finding what I'm looking for. I'm having some gameplay issues. The game installed and loads wonderfully, but I have issues with pregnancy, weight, and some limb (arm and leg) graphics. I've tried running the game with highest quality gameplay, and lowest quality gameplay, and it appears that it makes no difference. Periodically, when my Sim is talking on their cellphone, they're arms appear to bend backwards, and sort of detach from their bodies. They return to normal with no issue when they hang up, but it looks REALLY weird. Game generated SIMs will show their weight, but Sims I make do not. They're bodies kind of disconnect. I am running an a laptop, but it's less than a year old. Instead of being overweight, their clothes appear to disappear a little bit. Lastly a pregnant Sim never LOOKS pregnant. She'll have a baby, but she just kind of walks around skinny, but acting pregnant... waddling, sticking her belly out, etc.

    Anyone else? Ideas to fix?

  • Border Collie or Australian Shepherd?

Just for fun, a little quiz! Test your Aussie/BC recognition skills!

Try not to cheat :-), it's just for fun. I tried to find shots that hid tails, but remember, not every Aussie is docked, and not every BC has a full tail...

They also aren't always the best examples of the breed. Were I to take examples from show dogs, there would be no question, really. Anyway, I hope you have fun.

**fun fact** the last two are my dogs.

  • Should GOOD/REPUTABLE breeders advertise?

Everyone knows finding a good breeder through all the muck and the mire is incredibly difficult. We've decided that good breeders don't advertise, don't list in papers, don't sell online, and all in all, hide in the shadows waiting for the SERIOUS buyer to find them.

Well, then heck... where is Joe Public going to get puppies? That's right kids, BYBs, Pet Stores, and Puppy Mills.

Don't you know that people who aren't "dog" have NO IDEA that the labradoodle isn't a breed, that their Yorkipoo isn't rare, that their Puggle isn't a purebred. We scoff. We roll our eyes. We criticize. My puppy class had two labradoodles and a puggle. At first, I wanted to point out their idiocy--but it's simply ignorance. But you know what? They couldn't even have begun to know where to look in the "right places" for a family pet. A good breeder is nearly impossible to find. I feel they should SPEAK UP. ADVERTISE. Spread the truth and knowledge. Set up in parks on Sunday with your dogs in x-pens. Get attention.

Can we blame everyone out there for getting a puppy from the "wrong places"? The world between "dog in the know" and "Jane & John want a puppy for their family" stretches a chasm so wide we can't fathom it.

  • Do you really think dogs should not be...?

    ...left home alone all day?

I keep seeing answers to questions stating that it's cruel, wrong, heartless, etc... for a dog to be left home all day...

Well, I don't know about the rest of you, but I work all day (it just LOOKS like I play on Y!A all day). I have active herding dogs who get off leash runs before work, and a walk followed by off leash runs after work, and then some training work. Weekends are filled with doggie activities--I did Flyball with my BC, and I'm starting herding lessons with my Aussie.

Am I cruel and heartless to my dogs? Because that appears to be the general consensus.

  • Do Dogs Have an "Adam's Apple"?

..Or perhaps a sensitive spot on their throat that when it suffers a slight impact, causes coughing? My BC seems to have a sensitive spot on his throat, and when I was checking for weirdness, it seemed to be the spot where an "Adam's Apple" would be. Do canines have such a thing, or do I need him at the vet ASAP for a strange lump? Help me out. Thanks.
