    I have found the word "al makased" in the article "Egypt's Grand Mufti Counters the Tide of Islamic Extremism" at http://www.usnews.com/articles/news/world/2008/03/... and want to know what it refers to. As far as I can determine, it could be spelled مقاسد but I am not very certain. The article says "method of seeking to apply the law through an understanding of its purposes," but US News & World Report has a very strong anti-Islamic and anti-Arab bias. Does anyone have an Arabic-English dictionary? Can someone who speaks Arabic explain what مقاسد really means? Thank you.

    I am wondering what steps one takes to solve a question such as m^4 - 2m^3 - 3m^2 + 4m = 12.
