  • Is the gear knob examined on the MOT?

I have a Mk3 VW Golf with an automatic transmission.

The knob is broken and my car will be going in for its MOT at the end of the month, I want to know if it will fail the MOT for this reason.

Answers from the UK only please.

The gear knob has a button which when pressed laterally, applies down pressure to the top of the gear stick and this allows certain gears to be selected.

The button should spring out again once the stick is put in gear, however something is worn and it doesnt spring out. I have removed the knob and stuck a tennis ball over the end which allows me to press down on the top of the stalk to get the gears selected, and when I let go, the stalk springs back.

No problems driving, but I am not sure if this would fail the MOT because technically I do not have a standard gear knob.

Ive seen aftermarket ones for manual cars that come in all shapes and sizes, including snooker balls, but they dont have the push button feature that my autmatic does.

    Cheers.

  • Tips for fishing in and around Glasgow, Scotland.?

    Hey all,

Ive never been fishing before and im looking to do a little bit of basic stuff around Glasgow.

Ive seen guys fishing in the white cart and the kelvin before, just wondering a few things...

Is it legal, do I need a licence or permission or anything?

What species of fish is there a chance of catching in these places?

    Are they safe to eat?

I know that almost all river fish, world wide are good to eat, but what I want to know is if they are caught in a river that runs through the heart of a big city, are they still safe to eat or are they likely to be full of harmfull chemicals and stuff?

    Cheers!

  • Fitting a chrysler cd changer to a VW Golf, can it be done?

I just traded in my 2000 Chrysler Neon for a Mk3 VW Golf.

The Golf has a tape player thats not working, so I am looking to replace it sooner rather than later.

I still have the CD multichanger from the Chryser, its the player part itself that you would mount in the boot or under a seat, it has a chrysler wire harness coming from the back on about a half foot of wire.

I want to know if theres any way to keep this and get it mounted in the Golf, and run it off a cheap head unit.

Any one know if thats possible?

I know you can run an aftermarket stereo from the dash board if you get the right iso harness, but Ive never tried fitting a multi changer and a head unit.

The wiring for my multichanger was in the Chrysler when I got it, all I did was buy a changer and plug it into the harness.

Any help would be good, thanks!

  • Car not working, help needed!?

I have a 2000 Chrysler neon thats not working.

The service light has come on the dash board and when i turn the key, the car starts, but then splutters to its death after a second or two.

I think the fuel lines or the cat may be clogged or something which is blocking the fuel and causing the car to die.

    Does this sound right?

If so, anyone know how much this would cost to fix?

I will be taking it to a garage to ask, but I dont want them trying to pull the wool over my eyes and making up funny prices.

Hoping to get someone in the know to give me an idea what to expect.

    Thanks!

  • Med students, coroners and police officers.?

Ive seen in films, tv shows etc that when confronted with a corpse in a bad state, ie, smelling real bad, cops, coroners etc rub a little bit of something under their nose, just on their top lip.

It looks like it has a petroleum jelly type of cosistancy, and from what I gather it is scented in some way and it helps to cover the smell of the corpse.

Any one know what this is exactly?

    Thanks!

  • CD multi changer... Help please!?

Hi, I have a 2000 Chrysler Neon thats fitted with the factory head unit which has a cassette player and radio built in.

There is a buton that allows me to go between cassette, radio and CD, however there is no cd player.

There is however a wire harness in the corner of the boot.

Just wondering if this could be for a cd multi changer...anyone know?

I mean is this usually how multi changers work?

Ive never had one before, just a standard cd player.

    Cheers.

  • How do garages work regarding getting a quote for work?

I have an old car (1988 Escort), I want to keep it for a good while, hopefully maintain / restore it learning as I go along.

Thing is, theres a bit of trouble with the engine and at this stage with no tools and no real experience of working on cars, I cant put a finger on the problem and want to get a qualified mechanic to take a look.

Do I just go to a garage and say what I think the problem is and get them to give me a definate answer to what the problemis and tell me how much it will cost to fix it?

Will this cost me anything, if so, how much?

Because if it turns out the problem is major and is gona cost hundreds then i'll scrap the car and start over.

But I dont want to be charged a load of cash for the mechanic to not do any actual work on the car other than giving it a look and then telling me I'm better off scraping it.

    Thanks.

Oh im in Glasgow, Scotland btw incase things work differently around the world.

  • Noisey engine, need help please.?

    I have a 21 year old Ford Escort, 1.6 L petrol engine.

The engine is making one hell of a lot of noise and I am wondering if anyone knows whats up with it and how much it would cost to sort.

It basically sounds like ive got a 6 litre V8 under the hool instead of a 1.6 Litre 4cyl.

Very loud, louder when accellerating, but it starts as soon as I turn the key.

    Any suggestions?

The engine overheated a while back, fan wasnt connected and it went up in a cloud of steam. Let the engine cool, reconnected the fan, topped up the coolant and it was fine after that.

Not sure if something went then and its eventually ended up with this problem or what!

  • Catfish identification please!?

Hi, I bought a small catfish from a Pets at home.

I also bought a couple of other fish at the same time, the girl that dealt with me and wrote out my receipt asked a co worker for details on the catfish.

The co worker wrote down the name of the fish on the receipt and I think she was trying to show off to the girl I was dealing with.

Rather than writing the common name of the fish she has written its Latin name.

Though I think she's either confused the name or misspelled it, also, her handwriting is a bit difficult to make out.

I am trying to find out what type of fish it is, can any one help?

The name on the receipt looks like "peckolrla vittatuis" possibly "pedeolrla vittatuis".

Vitatus (not vittatuis) means striped or banded in latin. The fact she misspelled that makes me think she was trying to show off to her co worker... Not very helpful to me!

Its about 3 inches long and cost £10 if that helps any.

Ive tried to get a pic, but the fish is being sneaky and hiding under everythingin the tank and my camera sux!

  • Modifications and owner groups for the Mk4 Ford Escort?

    Hi,

I have a 1988 Mk4 Ford Escort, 3 door estate. UK Spec, not US.

I am trying to do some modifications but I am coming accross a bit of trouble.

Ive found a few pics online with the 3 door estate and the combi van that have had modifications, but I am having a bit of trouble tracking down the parts, and also rying to find a descent owners group for people in the know about the MK4.

Ive found some general Ford owners groups and some Escort owners groups online but they all tend to be interested in either the older cars or the newer ones. Not much talk about the cars from the 1980's.

If anyone spots this question and is in a group Id love to hear from them.

Also, the main mods I want to do are fit a RS kit (or somethign similar) and a rear spoiler.

Problems with that is, my Haynes manual says the overall length of the saloon is 4049mm and the estate is 4107mm.

I dont know if the extra length is on the bumpers or what, but I dont know if a bodykit from the saloon would fit the estate.

Is there a kit specifically for the estate or is it a case of customising the saloon kit?

Also, I am looking for a simple spoiler, something like the one from a Ford Focus RS, nothing too flash, just a little lip coming off the line of the roof.

But I cant find anything thats available so Id like to see if anyone has retro fitted one from another car, and how it was done?

    Cheers!

  • How much would it cost for this to be done to my car?

    Hi,

I am looking to get a rough idea of the cost involved in a few repairs to see if its worth while doing.

I cant afford a replacement car at the moment, its gona be about 6 months to a year before I can and will replace it because I need something bigger.

In the mean time, my 1988 Ford Escort (automatic) works but is smokey on startup and doesnt idle when in first gear.

Also, the handbreak doesnt work too well on steep hills.

I think the head gasket has gone, because theres oil around the block and with the blue smoke and idling issues it kinda points to that.

I was just wondering how much it would cost to get that sorted and the handbreak?

Its MOT'd til next april i think it is, so im pretty sure it will need work then, but i want to know if its worth while getting it repaired or not.

I cant really sell it for much in its current state which means I cant just get rid of it and buy another cheap car to see me through because all my cash is tied up til at least 6 months from now.

Any help would be appreciated guys!

  • Police eye test question...?

    Hey people...

I am applying to Central Scotland Police Force and have a question that I cant seem to find the answer to online.

I wear glasses to correct my long sightedness, and part of the application form is to be completed by my optician stating what my results are on the Snellen Scale.

    My results are 20/40 unaided.

Corrected to 20/20 with glasses / contacts.

According to the chart, perfect vision is 20/20.

I just wanted to know if 20/40 unaided and 20/20 aided is acceptable or if its no good.

I know from seeing officers wearing glasses that corrected vision is acceptable, but I just wanted to know how much correction is acceptable.

    Cheers.

  • Fishing in Scotland.?

Hi, I am a keen outdoorsman and I am looking to get into fishing.

I dont have the first clue about laws etc regarding fishing in Scotland so I would like some advice on permits and permissions.

Im looking to do river fishing in Scotland, near to Glasgow but a bit further a field too.

Basically Id like to know if there is anywhere i can fish without permits or if they are needed everywhere?

Also, is a permit specific to an area or to a certain fish in that area?

What happens if you have a permit for say trout and you land a salmon... Do I need to pay more or return the fish to the river or what?

I plan on eating anything I catch so please only give me info relating to catching river fish and not releasing them again.

I know that I can be sly and do it under the radar, but id rather do it legally just to save anyhassle and allow me to enjoy fishing without having to look over my back every two minuites for a landowner with a 12 guage! :o)

  • What's this movie about ratcatchers?

I vaguely remember seeing a film that had something to do with ratcatchers.

I know its not much to go on but I was young when I saw it and Its popped into my head so Id like to try and track it down.

I saw it on tv in the early 1990's, it was definately before 1994.

I believed it followed a group of people hunting down rats in sewers.

I think they used baseball or cricket bats to kill them.

I think they drove a navy blue van or 4x4... Possibly a Landrover Defender 110 or Series.

I dont know if it was British or not and I cant remember much of the plot, only that it revolved around a team of ratcatchers.

I thought the film was called "Ratcatchers", but after looking for it online its either not called that, or the 1999 film of the same name is taking over all the search engines.

Hope someone can help cos its doing my head in!

    Thanks!

  • MK4 Escort automatic gear box?

    Hi,

Im looking to get an answer from anyone out there who's had the job done or works in the industry.

How much would it cost to replace the automatic gear box in my 1988 (MK4) Ford Escort?

The problem with it is that its a bit jarey when moving up gears, also being 21 years old its, the stick has been through the motions a fair bit and its begining to show. Putting it in gear takes a stern hand!

If you know the set up then maybe you would know if the problems Ive described would be sorted by having the gear box serviced or something, I dontknow.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Car insurance question?

How do the authorities find out that you have no insurance on your car?

I know that if you are pulled over or whatever you can be asked to prove you are insured to drive the car and all, that much is obvious.

Thing is, I called up to cancel my insurance on a car which isnt working and Im waiting on being scrapped. The insurance company said that its illegal for the car to be on the road without being insured, regardless of wheither or not its being used.

As it turns out I am gona have to keep theinsurance for a few extra days until the car is uplifted, but it got me thinking.

If Im not using the car then theres no chance Id be pulled over, so is there any actual way that anyone would find out a car in that position wasnt insured?

Other than something like tha handbrake slipping and it rolling into the parked car in front or something.

    Cheers!

  • Power steering and auto transmission.?

Hi, I have a 1988 Escort with no power steering and an automatic transmission.

The auto tranny is a bit rough, also the jump from gear to gear on the way up is a bit shuddery.

I was wondering if theres any way that a more up to date gear box including the stick, say from a 1998 Mondeo, could replace the old Escort one.

Also, can power steering be put into the old Escort ?

    Thanks.

  • Driving a motorbike in the UK.?

Hi, I know that if youhave a provisional licence you can drive a bike upto 125cc so long as you have L plates fixed to the bike and you have completed a CBT course.

I passed my car (automatic) driving licence last year but have never been on a motorbike.

I just wanted to know what the script was with me driving one now.

I dont particularly want to get a motorbike specific licence as I am only looking to get something like a 125cc road legal dirt bike or a road legal quad, just to make getting offroad a bit easier when Im going camping and fishing.

I assume I can drive upto a 125cc without taking a motorbike test, but do I still need the L plates and the CBT or what?

    Cheers people.
