  • Scottish folk tale I can't track down?

I've heard a folk tale told at re-enactment events, but can't find it anywhere online: it's about a giant called thrum who attacks the orkneys, eventually they trap him in a pit full of spikes, but his hands come back to life and continue feasting on the villagers, so they burn his hands, then the ashes come to life as mites, and devour everyone. His battle cry is "I will find you, I will catch you, I will east you, thrum thrum". Anyone else heard this one?

  • Medium format index?

I've recently bought an ensign ranger mark 1. This is a medium format camera that shoots on 120m. One thing that puzzles me:

I'm told that this camera will only fit 8 9x6 cm frames on a standard roll of 120, as opposed to the normal 12. Therefore, how to I tell how far to wind on the film between exposures? With my other medium format that shoots 12 on a standard roll I wind it on untill I see the next number in the small red window, but if it's 8 rather than 12 it would imply the exposures of larger size, therefore the index wouldn't work would it? What do I do?

  • Mortgage for a Houseboat/Narrowboat (UK)?

I've read that there are specialist companies that offer mortgages for narrowboat and houseboats in the UK, but I've never heard of any. Anyone ever done this and have any they would recommend?

  • Nightmare cover lesson help please?

I am a cover supervisor just started at a middle school. A lesson I've had to cover a couple of time is year 7 lower set science, its a nightmare:

Its in a lab so a very large echoey space, the furniture is arranged such that half the children have their backs to me, and are clustered very close round the tables, perfect for distracting each other.

The lesson is only ever bookwork, i.e. "read these pages and answer question 1-7 in full sentences in your books, off you go" so I don't have much room for class discussion, and I don't know much science

there are quite a few SEN kids in the class, who are often disruptive and lacking in focus, there are also a few who simply refuse to do anything productive.

The result, today there was a large amount of noise, and whenever I called for quiet I was completely ignored. I then asked for silent working for 5 minutes so people could concentrate, they were silent for about 20 seconds. 2 senior members of staff came in and told them to quieten down, which made no difference.

Other tactics I'd tried include removing difficult children from the room, making them line up before entering the room, standing behind their chairs upon entering. I'm starting to run out of ideas, any suggestions?

  • When should you put the choke back in?

Had my first test drive of a classic mini a few weeks ago, got back wondering why the car was shaking the whole time, turned out I'd left the choke out all the time, never driven a car with a choke before so didn't notice.

After starting a car how long should you leave the choke out for? or how do you tell when to put it back in?

  • Leaving my job to take up a new position, but want to leave on good terms, how should I word it?

I currently have a part time job running after school clubs, however I have recently been offered a full time job as a cover supervisor at a school for a year.

I need full time work with proper wages, so I intend to leave the current part time job for the full time one. However, I would like to part on reasonable terms and stay in contact in case i cannot find another position after the year contract is up.

How should I word the email/letter?

  • Radio control voltage?

I want to have a go at making a radio controlled car, however not being an electronic whizz I want to but a transmitter receiver set "off the shelf as it were" such as this one: http://www.modelsport.co.uk/carson-reflex-6-ch.-2....

My question is this: is there a limit as the how powerful a system I can connect it to? When it says "operating voltage" does that mean how powerful a system I can connect it to, so in the example above I could connect it to motors batteries etc. no higher than 12v?

How do I find out how powerful a system I can connect a receiver to?

  • Professionalism in school?

I've just stared working in a secondary school as a teaching assistant and have observed the following, how concerned should I be?

Teachers swearing in front of students, dismissing a class with "right you lot, do one", a teacher call a student a prat, another telling her class "shut your gobs", a TA ask an autistic boy if he knew what a thong was. And on top of all of that whenever I tell a teacher that a table of students isn't working they say "they never work just leave them, not worth getting involved.

And to cap all of that off I got a bollocking today for breaking up two students who were trading punches in a lesson when the teacher was looking other way, as apparently a TA MUST NEVER get involved in classroom discipline, which seems odd to me.

The school has recently been put in the Special measures category by ofsted?

  • British made SLR camera?

I remember an article in amateur photographer, I think, paying tribute to the only SLR camera made by a british company, either that or Britain's only camera manufacturer to have made an SLR. I think it was Corfield but I'm not sure, any suggestions?

  • Could someone translate this into plain mans language?

My friend got this diagnosis from a doctor, regarding pain she gets from a fractured sternum when she was a child:

Sternal Fracutre continues to be persistant on the third register, and fourth intercostal space on the left and right side to its remains. Patient requires ECG to consider whether lasting damage may have been done to patient's heart and lungs. Perscribe diclofenac diethylammonium to assist with pain.

I get the bit about lasting damage, and the cream they've prescribed, but dont get the vocabulary about the damage, what actually is the problem?

  • Whats a polite way of telling your boss to get their act together?

I work as an after school club leader for a company. The rota I was given at the start of this term was full of mistakes, schools postcodes were wrong, club start times not the same as the school had been given meaning I was there late etc. Bosses were always late, very late, replying to emails trying to clarify issues that I need to have clear in order to do my job effectively.

Just got an email from them to all staff saying to stop ringing them over every issue, I feel this is a bit unfair as the only time's I've done this are due to admin **** ups made by them.

I feel this issue needs raising in order for me to do my job effectively, however I want to be tactful as on the whole I enjoy my job and don't want to get the sack. Any suggestions?

I'm getting a mechanical rattling sound from the back whenever I accelerate (pulling away at lights and junctions is particularly noticeable) or go over bumps, any ideas? I'm thinking rear suspension/sub-frame?

  • Traffic light offence (uk)?

I think I may have run a red light:

I slowed down approaching a pedestrian crossing but forgot to change down, stalled actually in the crossing with the lights green, by the time I'd got going again the lights had changed to red. I had crossed the white stop line, however there was a secondary light about 20 metres ahead which is on the same circuit as the ones at the crossing (so people don't have to croon their necks to see when it goes green presumably) that was red by the time I'd passed it.

    Is this an offence?

  • My car has developed an unusual fault...?

    2000 model ford ka

Whenever I plug anything into the cigarette lighter, it triggers the fuse for the fuel pump, killing the engine. Put a new fuse in and I'm good to go, still a bit odd no?

Not a big deal as I don't use the cigarette lighter for much, just charge the sat nav beforehand

Still, any ideas how exactly that manages to happen?

  • Double exposures with film cameras?

I'm thinking of treating myself to a lomo camera of some sort, and am keen to try out double exposures on film.

One thing I'm curious about though is, all other things in an image being equal, which image will generally come out stronger, the 1st or 2nd exposure?
