  • Laminate install in hallway?

    Hi all,

I'm currently installing laminate throughout my bungelow's main level, and I've come to an issue. My house is a 1974 engineered home, and the hallway is uneven on the right side. All the bedrooms are level, and the rest of the hall and living room is level (or only out by 1/4", which is acceptable to the instructions). This slant in my hall is directly over top of a support pillar (one of those metal ones) and is about 1/2" slant. What can I use to level it? Right now there is vinyl that we were hoping to just install overtop of, but if I need to remove it and put down a self leveler then I will. Or can self leveler be set ontop of the vinyl?

    Thanks :)

  • 14yr old dogs lump on back leg?

This might be a stupid question, but I figured I'd pose it to those out there that may have had a similar situation.

I've had my cocker spaniel/poodle/terrier mix since she was 8 wks old (I was 8) and dearly love her. Recently my vet moved and I've had to get in to see a new one. Long story short, This new vet has asked if it would allright if we ran tests on the hard, tennis ball sized lump on my pooches left back leg (she's had it for about 4 years now, and the previous vet didn't seemed very concerned at the time; also it hasn't grown since a year and a half after she got it) to make sure it's still a fatty lump or if it's metasised (sp?) and that she doesn't feel comfortable seeing her unless she knows what she's in for, So should I get it tested? or find a new doc?

The Lump doesn't seem to bother my girly, and I'm not really sure if I want to know if she does have cancer or not, since I don't like the idea of forcing her through chemo; she is 14, and I'd like her to be as happy as possible till the end and I really don't think prolonging her life in a miserable way would be best, and I know chemo sux. Plus she's way too old to get it removed even if it is. So in this situation, would ignorance be bliss?

*FYI I'm willing to let her "go on" if I notice her failing, but currently she's a happy, healthy 14 yr old who eats fine, drinks fine, and can out run the younger pups in the neighbourhood even with a enlarged heart

  • can a dog on heart meds and liver meds still get vaccinated?

It's probably a stupid question but my 13 yr old dog is currently on forteker, and APO-Furosimide for her heart, and Zentonil for her liver and I want to make sure these drugs won't interfere with any vaccines. Last year, in feb, I lost my dad. Shortly after my 13 yr old family dog, became really ill with some sort of infection. The vet we took her to gave us antibiotics, however he proscribed a dose for a 70 lb dog (my dog is 20 lbs) this caused her liver to nose-dive. A second opinion with our regular vet who was out of town the day we needed intervention that nearly killed her, confirmed her liver enzymes were elevated and after some other testing confirmed she has acquired an enlarged heart over her lifetime. So she's been on these meds.

At the time she was due for her yearly vaccinations, but the our regular vet said that her condition was pretty bad, and didn't want us to vaccinate till we were sure she was going to make it. (I get it, no use paying to vaccinate a dog that will be dead in a few weeks) Well surprisingly Jazzy survived. It's now going on a year, and with regular meds and exercise she's better then ever. My major concern now is she needs her vaccinations, I don't want her die of something preventable after all we've been through. Unfortunately my regular vet, for 13 yrs, has left town leaving me with a completely new vet. Tomorrow we'll be going in for some blood work, and consult. Should there be any reason my pooch can't get vaccinated?

  • transition strips between allure vinyl and vinyl in kitchen?

We're redoing our house right now in allure vinyl flooring planks (sapelli red to be exact). We chosen this flooring as a cheap update right now to update our horrible, trapped in the 70's house (eventually to be replace by hardwoods when we can afford it); however, I've come across an issue while installing. What do I use for transition strips between the allure vinyl and the grouted vinyl self adhesive tiles in the kitchen? The self stick tiles are about a tile lower then the allure. Also what do I use as transitions between rooms. Unfortunately we didn't buy all we needed the first go around (thought it would be best to "try" the allure in the bedrooms before going further into the carpeted hallway and LR). When I installed the bedrooms, I of course, cut the planks to remove the sticky strips (if I hadn't I could've easily stuck the hall's flooring together, but then the adhesive would've been contaminated.) So any ideas to cover the gaps? Or should I just but up the hall's planks and slap down some contact cement/construction adhesive?

    Thanks :)

  • Htc desire HD, Blackberry bold 9900 or Blackberry Torch 9860?

The rate plans for both with my cell company are relatively the same, however the desire would be 29.99 on a 3 year contract and the BB's would be more like 149 out of pocket. I'm on the fence, right now I'm using a nokia C3 and kinda like the solid keyboarsd (usually touch screens don't work for me; the reason iphone 4/5 not an option), hence the bold being in my choices; however if Swype is all it's cracked up to be I could easily text with the HTC.

So which is better for college student use; ie: ease of texting (swype), apps, fit easily in jeans pocket when needed, battery life.

    Thx

  • how to get rid of marigolds?

this year were fixing the front yard, first the removal of the cedars now onto the flower beds. A few years ago we planted homedepot's optimum marigolds, and now they're taking over. They seriously have spread like weeds, and now they're killing off all our other plants/flowers. So how do I get rid of them? do I sift the soil? or is there a simpler method?

    thanks

  • digging up remainder of cedar bushes?

My neighbour, being generous and trying to help us out since my dad died, basically pruned our cedar front hedges to smithereens. Granted my mom wanted them out, but since he's left just the brown stem structure and roots it looks nasty in the front of the house (though it my look good come halloween). So how do I get these stumps out? Do I dig them out or is there a better, less back breaking method, keep in mind there is only about a single lane between me and across the street, so I don't think a truck yanking it up is a very good plan of action, but if I could get a hold of a truck and try will it do any damage to my foundation; the cedars were planted right under the front window.

    Thanks for any suggestion,

oh also, what would be a suitable replacement? my mom has a theory the cedars attracted a lot of hornets to our front yard (and since the cedars have been drastically cut they do seem to have left). I want something with a bit of height like the cedars, and she prefers flowers; I fear roses are a bit "sensitive" for my noob gardening skills. :)

  • blackberry or smartphone?

I know they both have droid, and yes I'm aware of iphone4. I don't want one simply because I already have the latest touch, and absolutely HATE the way it texts (iphone is the exact same text wise; FYI not an apple hater, actually using a macbook right now). So which is better, BB or smartphone like the HTC Sensation, or Samsung galaxy SII.

I kinda like the keyboard, only because my only experience with touch texting is with my ipod touch, and as stated above it really sux. I just want something that's simple to use, doesn't sending off horribly off auto corrected texts, and has a pretty good battery life.

    thx :)

  • Sentimental gift ideas for 16, 14, and 11 year old nieces?

my nieces have been through the ringer lately. Their mom and dad are finally getting a divorce after 18 years of a BAD marriage( 3 of those recently separated), and this last february my dad (their grandpa) passed away suddenly due to a heart attack. Their 18 year old sister then promptly verbally assaulted their mom (she blames my sister for her fathers adultery) long story short, she moved out and kinda threw the balance that was their home even more off. This caused the 16 year old to fail most of her grade 10 year (she just squeaked through summer school), the 14 year old is like a turtle lost in her shell, and the 11 year old is refusing to be around any girls her own age (she rather stay at my sisters side).

Now I know theirs not much I could do to "fix" them, that's between their mom and them and I'm only here for a person to talk to (I live about 2 hours away in a smaller city, while they live in a much larger city, Calgary Alberta if you've hear of it is about 2x the size on my city, Lethbridge); but I figure if I give them a sentimental gift, they'll feel a bit more appreciated by me, and know I'm always here. I've already promised them all something this coming June, but neither I nor they know what. They seem excited at the prospect of something personal. But what? I thought maybe a quilt for each, or maybe a birthstone necklace with an inscription on the back. But I'm not sure. Should I go store bought, or home made? and what do 11-16 year olds classify as a "good" gift.

    Thanks

  • how do I go about getting car fixed?

I had an accident in february, my car was hit by a hit and run which sent it soaring into a pole on the other side of the street. I only had PLPD, and it's a 2004 dodge sx 2.0. We have an estimate from the dealership my car got towed to, around $6000 with labour. I'd like to go around and get other estimates but the rear drivers side is pretty gibled and I can't see me phoning a tow to take it to every other shop in lethbridge, alberta, Canada.

I realize that with the amount of money to fix it, I should just junk it. However this was my first car given to me by my dad so their's a emotional attachment. Plus if I could get it fixed I could have my mom driving herself around instead of me being the chauffeur.

    A picture of the damage:

  • help me choose a sofa?

I've recently been updating my basement. I've painted the panelling yellow/beige (calm air by behr to be exact) and have installed medium brown walnut flooring in the main living area (just to ground the colour a bit). Anyway I'm having issues with a choice in sofa; all my furniture pieces will be white (and most from ikea lol) just to keep the area bright. The sofa is causing me a pain though. I want something a bit bolder, say this:

    http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/S898738...

but my better half wants something more simpler like:

http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/S898738... (which I feel will be too much white)

What do you guys think? Colour suggestions? I prefer ikea stuff only because our basement is not furniture delivery friendly, and ikea stuff can be built down there (plus it's not our regularly used furniture).

Also FYi: the sofa needs to be a sectional, we've go the space for it and I hate sofa/loveseat combos; also the basement is L shaped, but the area for the tv is the straight (bowling alley like) area:)

  • removing concrete nails?

Ok so I took out a solid wood and bar only for my project to be halted by concrete screws. I've so far tried to pull them up (4 others came out easily, 2 are stuck), I've tried to hammer the 2 from side to side to see if they'll snap, nothing...Then I tried bending them over with a sledge hammer, all I got was bent stuck nails, no snapping; these 2 are evil, I swear... So how the heck do I snap them enough to make level for laminate? I have a grinder (know idea what kind of blade it has) but am worried that if I use it I might catch the wood panelling on fire (we've had 2 house fires in the neighbourhood recently and I don't like my odds); any other ideas?

  • installing traffic master vinyl self adhesive tiles?

After finishing off bits of our basement, we've come to the area where we need to install vinyl tiles. So I get the jist of it, but what I need to know is do I need to prime/seal concrete that already is painted red? my house was built in 1974, and has been water-free (knock on wood) since then. So is the paint enough, or should I go over with a can or two of primer? I intend to throughly clean the flooring (old indoor/outdoor carpet's under pad has disintegrated so I have to ensure all that dirt/dust is gone) plus I intend to roll down some mold inhibitor just incase?

Any suggestions to ensure a long stick would be appreciated :)

  • installing slate on basement floor?

I have a lot of leftover slate that once belonged on my 70's bar that I recently tore down, all of it is flat backed and in pretty good shape considering the demo. Anyway how do I go about using it on the floor of my basement? What type of mortar do i use? Granted I know it won't be pretty tiles (because the stone were huge slabs) so a mosaic is what I'm after.

    Thanks:)

  • best method to tear down stone bar?

We have a very 1970's bar in our basement, and if it didn't take up the majority of the room we'd leave it but we need the space, I believe it's made of stone (my mom thinks it's only fake looking stone, but to the touch it definitely feels real; including cement). Anyway how do I go about tear this thing down? It's only attached to 1 wall, with no poles or structure attached to any other walls/ceilings. Do I just use a sledge hammer? or will I need to rent a jack hammer?

    Any advice is appreciated :)

  • how are ikea sofas packed?

Are they flat boxed like the rest of their items, or fully put together? I'm asking this because I want to buy the Ektorp sectional sofa and need to know if I need to rent a Uhaul to get it to my house (which is about 2 and a half hours away from the nearest ikea), or if I can just fold down the seats in my jeep and drive it home that way.

    Thx :)

  • duvet or not to duvet?

What's your opinon? I personally usually use just a comforter, but buying a comforter for a more "adult room" compared to a "teen room" is hugely expensive plus there are no colours I actually care for; so do I dare duvet?

I've heard nightmares about how duvets constantly move to the corners, or the entire thing moves to the end of the cover; how do I stop this from happening?

    thanks:)

  • different nightstand ideas?

I'm in the market for a couple of new nightstands and was wondering what people would have to suggest. I don't want to spend over $100 so most furniture is out, so I'm thinking ikea; however I don't want the typical nightstand with drawers, i want something that's...well different but I'm not sure what.

I've thought of maybe using the lack wall shelf, or possibly buying noresund night table; you guys have any interesting ideas to use uncommon furniture as a nightstand?

I was thinking of buying one. I was wondering if anybody knows if I could use a box spring and mattress set with it? Or would it be too high for the headboard?

  • Installing laminate in bedroom?

I'm thinking of installing laminate in my upstairs bedrooms (I already did the basement "bonus" room) so I know how laminate is done. My only question is about the closets/registers. Because in the basement all of our registers are on the ceiling, and there wasn't a closet in the bonus room. So do I start in these areas? or finish? (I'm guessing start because of all the fancy cutting). Also what do I do for the tracks of the closet that's on the floor? do I leave it in or remove it and screw it ontop of the laminate when I'm done?

    Thanks :)
