  • Human Existence and Science/Mathematics?

Science and mathematics can quantify time and space, but why can't they quantify love, hope, or sadness (perhaps a lack of understanding in determinism or chaos theory)? Biologically, emotions can be understood, yes. However, they can not be defined in any exact manner. This is not an appeal to religion or belief but rather, an honest questions about the worth of science. Is it strictly utilitarian or do you believe its the answer to the question of what it is to be human? I perceive and react to the sky (with the same awe) in the exact same way as my ancestors, but the only difference seems to be that now I can say that what I see are extraterrestrial bodies luminescent through understandable chemical and gravitational reactions light-years away. Somehow, I don't think our feelings have changed, simply our understanding. Is it even possible for an understanding created by a subjective consciousness to realize objectively the nature of its existence?

(maybe I should be asking this in the philosophy section, but I would like to hear what the more mathematically or scientifically inclined have to say)
