  • Poorly Cared for Uromastyx Maliensis?

I've been searching the internet like mad for accurate information about uromastyx, and have had very little luck. No one seems to agree with anyone else - and I really need some correct and useful info.

I'm currently taking care of my friend's boyfriend's Uromastyx maliensis, Spike, and have so far learned that he has been cared for incorrectly for most of his life. He's about 7 years old.

This is the way he is kept:

In a 40 gallon fish tank with two Western Fence Lizards (wild caught around here in northern California). He has a heat lamp that isn't nearly hot enough, no thermometer, and his light source is the heat lamp and a fluorescent bulb in a desk lamp. He is regularly fed superwoms and crickets, and a salad mix heavy on the spinach. He's not being supplemented in calcium, nor is he receiving any UVB. There were two hotrocks in the tank, which I have since turned off (now they're just odd decorations). His owner takes him out on walks. That said, we do live in California so temperature is not the issue, but I seriously doubt there are any benefits to doing so.

I'm looking for any inexpensive ways that I can improve his quality of life, as his owner is broke and I have my own expenses. I feel terrible that he's been treated this way and wouldn't feel right continuing to do so.
