  • Best winter tires for 2008 Ford Focus?

    I live in Maine, and our winters generally come with a lot of ice and slush, and periodic heavy dumps of snow. I've been driving for 20+ years here and I know how to handle myself on these roads in pretty much any conditions. However, I do have a tire question.

    I've been driving a VW Jetta for years, and I've been able to negotiate road conditions with good all-season tires. However, I recently bought an '08 Ford Focus Coupe, 5-speed, front-wheel drive (I love it, by the way), which runs on bigger, wider tires than my Jetta did.

    I want to be safe in my daily commute (36-40 miles each way--it's the price you pay for having a decent job in a rural state with no public transportation infrastructure), but I'd prefer not to sacrifice too much gas mileage in the process. I'd like to hear from other Focus owners with similar winter driving conditions about what has worked for them. Thanks!
