its a fantasy book about a girl who wishes to become a bard she meets death early on and he challenges her to play something that entertains him before the sun rises she does so playing through the night and just before daybreak she manages to impress him enough he gives her a bag of silver she leaves the small town soon after and gets training in the city in playing music trains for a few years and goes to try to become a bard and passes only to find out only males are allowed to become bards and has to escape this story has magical elements in the music played that aren't emphasized much till after she finds out about the restriction on sex and escapes and uses the music to persuade someone to do something by accident (i might be a bit off on a few detains its been 12 years since I've read this and i really would like to know what it is and if it was part of a series)
