  • Cold Weather Clothes for Alaska?

Hello! I am about to make a move from Texas to Alaska (military move), and would like some input on clothing stores. I would like to know if anyone has suggestions for clothing besides LL Bean or Lands End. Both websites are great, and I have already ordered from them, but I want some more possibilites! I am having a hard time finding stores that have the winter rated clothes. Thanks in advance!

  • Do you believe American soldiers will be sent to Burma?

I have been watching this story unfold very carefully, and I am wondering if it will be the next place our soldiers will step in? I mean, for a society that so desperately wants democracy that they elected a democratic party, only to have the current military government refuse to step down. I would like to know your opinions on whether or not you think the american military will step in? Just curious really. Thanks for your responses.

  • At what age do you thing children start to have nightmares?

My 20 month old daughter has been sleeping through the night like a champ since she was about 9 months old. I very rarely have to go into her room at night anymore (normally only when she doesn't feel well). However, occassionally she wakes up crying really hard. Body racking, choking, can't breathe, sobs. All I have to do is go into her room, pick her up out of her crib, and sit down in the chair in her room. She (usually) just collapses right onto my shoulder, twirls my hair in her little fingers, and promptly goes back to sleep. I would like to know your opionions on whether or not you think she is having nightmares? I know that she is old enought to remember things, and retain information, so I was just wondering what other parents think (or have experienced). Thanks for your responses!

  • Selling a house before a PCS?

I want to know what people did when they owned a home and found out they were PCS'ing. Specifically, if their house didn't sell before the move. Did the military member go on ahead, while the spouse stayed behind to continue to try to sell? If so, does the military member get to stay in some kind of temp. housing? I know logically that they shouldn't be allowed to because they get BAH for housing, but it's too expensive to pay a mortgage in one place, and rent in another. Needing advice here on how to handle this situation should it arise. I am hoping I can lease the house if it doesn't sell. Thanks in advance for your answers!!

  • Relocating to Ft. Wainwright, Alaska?

I asked a few weeks ago about Ft. Wainwright, and got about 4 answers (thank you, by the way, for those answers). I just thought I would post again just in case there are some new people on Y/A. My husband is PCS'ing in December to Ft. Wainwright, and there is so much to do for such a big move! I contacted the relocation office, and got a big packet of info about the area. I was just wondering if anyone who has been there could give any advice about the move. Did anyone utilize the ferry from Washington, for example? Was it expensive to winterize your vehicle? How did you find off-post housing without making a trip ahead of time? Those kinds of things. Anything that anyone might suggest would be very helpful. Thank you in advance for your answers!

  • Did anyone go from working mom to SAHM?

I am currently working full time, but am striving to be able to stay at home with my daughter (she is 18mths now) after the first of the year. At the moment, she is SUPER clingy to me. I can’t do anything around the house when she is awake. She clings to my legs, and begs for me to hold her. She drags me around the house room to room wanting me to be with her, no matter what she is doing. Don’t get me wrong—I love that I am her favorite person; it just makes it hard to get anything done. I attribute much of it to the fact that we don’t get that much time together because I work full time. So on the weekends, or the evenings, she wants me every second. Have any of you had an experience where you worked in the beginning, then went being a SAHM? If so, did you have to combat this same problem? I am hoping that when she gets me full time, she won’t have the desire to cling to me so much. Maybe I’ll just be boring ol’ mom! LOL!

  • Why do people give their unasked opinions on the military?

Okay, so here it is...my husband is in the military. When he is out of uniform (or in for that matter), and someone asks what he does for a living, he will tell them. Why do people at that point think it is okay to give their opinion (usually people with a neg. opinion) about the military, or the war? When you find out someone is a lawyer (or some other disliked professioin), you don't automatically make rude comments to them. Why do people think it is okay to do that to our servicemen? Nobody asked what their opinion was! I TRULY don't understand peoples' need to voice their unwanted, unasked opinions to our soldiers. It's like they aren't capable of showing respect to that person, simply because they don't agree with the war, or do not understand the military itself. I am sure that there isn't any good answer to this, but I pose the question anyways... Why? I can think of no other profession that deserves the respect that this one does, even if you don't agree w/ the war.

  • When is it okay to leave toddler in bath alone?

I have an 18 month old daughter, and I do believe she is too young to be left alone. I just want to know when you all started being secure with leaving your children in the bathtub without supervision. I am a little paranoid about it, so I haven't a clue as to when it is the right time. Thanks for all your input!

  • Military move allotment?

Anyone who has had an OCONUS military move that knows about the financial allotments? I read somewhere about one that allots for a house hunting trip in your new location. The depth of an OCONUS move is so deep that I feel overwhelmed with all the information. Just having a hard time weeding through everything. It would be really nice if I could take a trip there first to try to find off post housing. Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Time for another baby?

Okay, so here is my story: I am an army wife, and we are about to be moving to another state (a base in Alaska). I have one child, who is 18 months old. My husband and I always talked about having two children, but we are both very happy with the way things are going right now. He asked me last night "where are we at on having another baby?" I was a little stunned, but we talked about it and he wanted to know how I was feeling about it. I am several years older than he is (I am 31, and he is 26). He knows that I have always said I wanted to have our children close together because I don't want to be mid-30's having an infant. Part of me feels like I am completely happy having only one child, and the other part thinks it would be wonderful for her to have a sibling. We will be moving in December, and there is the possibility he will be going back to Iraq after we get there. That scares me because I will be raising 2 babies alone instead of just one. I am looking for opinions.

  • Relocating to Ft. Wainwright, AK-Help please?

My husband is an infantryman in the army, and we will be pcs'ing to Ft. Wainwright soon. I have been on the website for the base, along with several other websites in order to try to get all my ducks in a row. Anyone who has been stationed there before with some suggestions- housing, relocating, websites-anything at all, it would be greatly appreciated. This is such a huge move for us (currently in TX), that I feel overwhelmed at the prospect of going somewhere so different from where we are already at. Super excited about the move, just need some guidance. Thanks for the info!

  • My 18 month old has loose stoole for about 2 weeks now?

My toddler has been having diarrhea off and on for about 2 weeks now. She is not running a fever, and she is not vomiting. She seems to be in good spirits, and doesn't act like her belly hurts. I have tried to cut some of the dairy out of her diet, and switched to lactose free milk- just to see if that made a difference. It doesn't seem to have done anything one way or the other. She does have about 4 teeth coming in right now, and I know that sometimes leads to diarrhea, but I am a little concerned just the same. We go to the doctor next week for her 18 mth checkup, so I'll mention it then. Just thought I would see if anybody had any suggestions! Thanks!
