1 AnswerBeer, Wine & Spirits8 years agodisplay issue on new laptop?
i just got my new windows 8 64-bit laptop out of the mail.
some of the images - including HUD icons - are displaying in an annoying, somewhat pixelated manner, as if my computer doesn't have access to enough colours to correctly show the image. it looks the same as an old issue I used to have with my Vista 32-bit laptop where the graphics settings would somehow reset themselves to 16-bit.
but there's no similar fix - i have no option for 64-bit colour depth.
is there a way to fix this?
1 AnswerLaptops & Notebooks8 years agoComputer suddenly can't access router?
So after living in my new house for a year and some and having my router and my computer in the same place, with no problem, again for over a year, my computer is suddenly too far away from the router to connect.
Indeed, if I bring it downstairs, it connects just fine. But it was working fine before up in my room and I'd kind-of, you know, like to be able to use my laptop in my room, where my speakers, printer, tablet and everything are set up.
It's a relatively new router too so it shouldn't be dying. On the other hand, my computer is a 5-year-old laptop, so maybe my wireless card is just fried?
Any suggestions to fix/ improve the situation much appreciated.
1 AnswerComputer Networking9 years agoadding butter chicken to italian tomato sauce?
I'm considering experimenting a bit with my usual Italian-style spaghetti sauce (ground beef, canned tomatoes, tomato paste, onions, garlic, mushrooms, spinach, red wine, olive oil, basil & oregano)...
I'm using ground chicken this time, and was considering just using lots of soya sauce and red wine to 'darken' the flavour back to what I'm more used to - but I also picked up a can of butter chicken sauce from the grocery store and the possibilities are intriguing.
So: onions, garlic, canned tomatoes, ground chicken, butter chicken sauce, same veggies, basil, something other than oregano (turmeric? I don't cook a lot of non-Italian food oops)
Anyone think that sounds any good? Or potentially disastrous? Any further suggestions?
3 AnswersCooking & Recipes9 years agohow to take the ratio of two numbers?
apparently it is stupid o'clock and I can't remember grade eight math, or apply other peoples' answers to my question. so: how do I "take the ratio of two numbers" ? In this case, 299 and 184. in the table we're supposed to fill out there's a "/" that might indicate we're supposed to divide the 299 by 184, but it's actually between words (in text relating to the numbers but not necessarily actually indicating division) so I'm not sure if that's what my prof means, and I seem to remember ratios involving dividing smaller numbers by the larger?
any help is appreciated.
4 AnswersMathematics10 years agoare OUTER lip tattoos possible?
I'm just wondering if they're possible, or if there's something with the skin on your outer lip that makes it impossible. (I can't find any pictures - even people who get their entire faces tattooed tend to have normal-looking lips. I'm therefore assuming that it might be impossible.)
For a character design question, not actually getting a tattoo. If tattoos don't work... I'll just go with scarification, I guess.

I don't know. So give me some suggestions for things to ask for. Cheaper end of the spectrum.
Note: gift cards, money = duh, that's what people will get me if I can't think of anything else.
Note 2: not interested in makeup, clothes, jewellery, spa, purses, romance novels, girly ****, etc.
2 AnswersOther - Holidays1 decade agowhich beanie baby is this?
I can't figure it out... of course, its ear tag is missing and its foot tag conveniently doesn't have its name.
It's not actually a 'beanie baby' ; it's a ty plush animal toy, quite a bit larger than the regular babies, and it's not 'beanie' at all. It appears to be a snow leopard (but I'm pretty sure it's not Sundar) or some other kind of (wild?) cat that is base white with spots.
It has; dark amber eyes, white whiskers, grey nose, white mouth-patch, white belly, white feet; its natural pose is similar to Sundar's; its non-pure-white fur is a sort of mottled spot pattern almost like freckles. It does not have super-soft fur.
In comparison to the pictures I see of Sundar, it has a much wider, rounder (and imho, cuter) face, with shorter, round ears; the spots pattern is quite different; and its nose and eyes are the wrong colour. Its feet have more plain white on them, and its face less. It does not have a brown patch over its nose.
It is dated to 2001.
Any help would be appreciated!
1 AnswerToys1 decade agodoes my website work on your browser? and if not, help?
http://design.sheridanc.on.ca:16080/~smith-halvers...
apparently the navigation (the floormap... click it!) simply does not work on IE (I've been coding for Chrome).
does it work on Safari or Firefox, and/or does anyone know why it is/isn't working in the various browsers and what to do to fix it?
thanks.
3 AnswersProgramming & Design1 decade agohow to stop this iframe from scrolling?
this is just a dinky little homework website, but it has to function properly: http://design.sheridanc.on.ca:16080/~smith-halvers...
on my PC in both IE and Google Chrome the navigation (floorplan-like image), for no apparent reason, scrolls both vertically and horizontally. it should not: it should fit in the page perfectly.
the iframe CSS is:
#navframe{
float:left;
width:317px;
height:209px;
z-index:9;
}
the image is exactly 317x209.
the iframe appears as:
<iframe id="navframe" name="navframe" src="navframe.html" frameborder="0"></iframe>
navframe.html appears, roughly, as:
<body>
<map name="imagemap">
<area etc...>
</map>
<img src="nav.png" alt="navigation" usemap="imagemap"/>
</body>
any suggestions?
1 AnswerProgramming & Design1 decade agoTheoretical relation sharing 75% of your genes?
From a potentially sci-fi-esque point of view, wherein technologies like genetic modification, strange new drug therapies and advanced surgical practices may be available, what kind of relatives could a human share 75% of their genetic material with (like how parent-child / ordinary siblings / fraternal twins share 50%, identical twins 100%, etc) ?
All I can think of is if one egg was fertilized by two sperm but separates into two zygotes before 'cross-contamination' can occur... ...somehow... does that even work? I don't know.
Any other ideas?
2 AnswersBiology1 decade agoWhen (if ever) do you think science might discover a "cure" for mortality?
Do you think you'll be alive when they do, or that you'll be able to afford it? Do you hope so? Or do you think we'll all kill ourselves off with global warming / nuclear holocaust / zombie apocalypse before we can find the answer?
This is supposed to be a fun silly little poll, just for the sake of interest - don't take it too seriously. :)
5 AnswersMedicine1 decade agowhich book - Robert Jordan's last, finished by his son?
Hi, my brother's asked for this for Christmas, and instead of being, you know, useful, and giving us a title or something, he said "the new robert jordan (he died but his son finished it) book."
Would that be "The Gathering Storm" ?
thanks!
1 AnswerBooks & Authors1 decade agoGouache on illustration board?
Hi, I'm looking to do a bit of gouache painting and I'm far too lazy to soak watercolour paper (also don't have a suitable place to soak it, or a board to staple/tape it to, etc etc). My other options are plain old cartridge (printer) paper and a bit of canvas (not yet primed).
Oh, I also have some coverstock - black coverstock, which might make an interesting effect.
Any suggestions? I can go out and buy some kind of better paper another time, but not at the moment. If you have any other suggestions for the future (I've done gouache on stonehenge before, and it doesn't curl tooo much), those would be great too.
If you think the illustration board is my best bet, and particular pointers about whether I should keep it relatively dry?
Thanks!
3 AnswersPainting1 decade agoproblem with... video card? RAM?
Hi, I'm running Windows Vista on an Asus MV50vm notebook, featuring 4GB RAM and 1GB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GS video card.
And on occasion this http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/deddish/blur... happens - blurring / pixelation - it looks like the video card just decided to give up or something. It affects all aspects of all programs, most visibly in graphics where a 'smooth blend' is supposed to occur but instead... there's this crap! Which is very annoying while I work on my graphic design homework.
So... does anyone know what the problem is, or how to fix it?
3 AnswersLaptops & Notebooks1 decade agoWhich of these 4 designs is best?
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/deddish/mshv...
Please help, it's 2AM and I have to select two and mount them for tomorrow.
It's for Typography class =/
Project description:
"Solution A: Two contrasting letterforms visually linked- try to work with alignments rather than overlapping. Integrate letters by aligning top, bottom or parts and utilize asymmetrical balance. The overall effect should feel unified and balanced.
Solution B: Two letterforms, one positive (black) and one negative (white) integrated into each other. One or both letterforms should be incomplete."
I then have to select also the very best individual design.
My main concerns are that it must be legible (my initials are MSH- I know the project says 'two' various times but I have two surnames- and I'm worried that in 1a and 2b, although the most aesthetically pleasing designs in my opinion, look more like a (backwards?) N or a weird V or abstract symbol...), fulfil the project requirements, and of course, look nice.
So the valid couplings are 1a+1b, 2a+2b, or 1b+2a ; I'm obviously not going to just submit 1a+2b.
I can also nudge the designs around a bit if need be.
Thank you very much for ANY suggestions or opinions.
5 AnswersDrawing & Illustration1 decade agoAn English spelling for my made-up word?
Hi,
I am partially inventing a language for a story I'm writing. The language itself is called Veržuran- at least, in Veržuran it's called Veržuran- but I want an English way to spell it. (e.g., the French call French "Français", not French; the Spanish, Español; these people call their own language "Veržuran," but we call it something slightly different.) It comes from the made-up region, Veržura.
It's pronounced veyr-JHOOR-ah -- the ž is like the s in "treasure"- and in English I want it to be called the "vairž" language. But I'm finding it difficult to get both the ž and the 'air' vowel sound across.
Which of these are you most tempted to pronounce 'correctly' , or do you have any suggestions of your own? (And feel free to mix-and-match the vowel and consonant combinations from below.)
- Vaerge
- Verge
- Verzh
- Veirge
- Vairjh
Thanks!
2 AnswersLanguages1 decade agobest real paint to use as substitute face paint?
I am going to a costume party thing as a clown and would like to paint my face but- couldn't find any face paints! I don't have any makeup whatsoever so, are any of these safe to use on faces?
-Acrylic (I figure I might get away with just a red smile? or a teardrop- sad clown)
- dry watercolours (strike me as a likely not very effective)
- gouache (might work! but I don't know? it's chalk pastel suspended in egg)
- oil (take too long to dry probably, also possibly hazardous although obviously I wouldn't use varsol)
thanks for any help/ suggestions!

4 AnswersPainting1 decade agoHow to replace Graphire4 Tablet Pen?
I have a Wacom Graphire4 Tablet- yes, the discontinued one.
I can't really afford to replace the tablet unless it's absolutely necessary.
But the tablet works- in fact the pen still works, although I don't think it'll survive much longer (it was pulled apart by accident, won't go the full way back together, and the larger clicker button doesn't work now).
Is this <a href="https://direct.wacom.com/stores/5/Graphire_Wireles... the correct thing to purchase? Will it work easily with my tablet? It's a completely different-looking pen.
Is there any chance an Intuos pen would work, if those are easier to get a hold of by some chance?
Thanks for any help.
1 AnswerOther - Hardware1 decade agoShould I be the better person...?
OK. Long story short. My art class' final exam was to put up a functional gallery downtown for two weeks. My own art from the semester was there, and I was pretty damn proud of it. Not to mention all the other awesome art. Free admission. Again, two weeks, ten AM to five PM, during school exam time (also known as time off).
My best friend, did not show.
I was a little disappointed.
And just now, she says, "Hey, I'm going to be busking in the park tomorrow, 1-5. You should come and have me draw you."
Which would involve me paying money that I don't really have to have her draw me, likely in her anime style that is really nothing special at all and I don't even like.
I've a very strong mind not to show. But maybe I'm just being an eensey bit bitter and wanting some kind of revenge.
I don't know. What do you think? Should I be the better person, or let her know how much it sucks to have your friends not give a damn.
