  • What can I do to stimulate tomato growth in a Topsy Turvy container?

This is my first attempt at growing tomatoes upside down. I followed the instructions carefully using good quality potting soil. I planted two seedlings ~3-4” tall with the intent of thinning down to the one that grew fastest. I hung the planter on a sunny deck – water it every day as recommended – and used a small amount of Peters 20-20-20 fertilizer twice.

Four weeks later, the seedlings are almost the same size as when I planted them, just curled up under the bottom of the planter as if trying to grow up. The leaves are still a nice green color, but they are not growing. Meanwhile, their siblings that I planted in standard containers are 12-14” tall and growing like crazy 20 feet away.

The most obvious problem I see is that the seedlings are so small and under the Topsy Turvy so they get very little direct sunlight. Since it is a soft sided container, I cannot just lay it on the side to expose the seedlings to direct sun.

    Any ideas?
