  • Mil-to-mil spouse, legal residents of different states, can we file federal taxes jointly?

Husband and wife are both active duty, legal residents of different states, neither state has a state income tax. Will the couple be able to file federal taxes jointly, or will the state residency issue prevent this?

  • Do credit cards count toward your debt-to-income ratio?

When applying for a loan or a re-fi, does the credit limit on your credit cards count toward the debt-to-income ratio that creditors look at when considering your loan application and your interest rate? If the balance on the card is even, does it have the same effect as one that you only pay the minimum payment toward?

  • Has any research been done regarding how tax money would otherwise be spent?

Many people calling for decreased gov't spending use the argument "we can spend our money better than the government can." I am generally inclined to agree, but as far as stimulating the economy goes, I am curious if that statement is really accurate. The federal government has no savings, all of thier money is output into the global economy. How many Americans would actually spend 100% of the money that is taken as tax (to include capital creating investments, but excluding CDs, savings accts, etc) Is there any research done to support this argument one way or another.

I'm not trying to justify welfare programs, or higher taxes. There are many government spending programs that I don't particulary wish to contribute to. Please don't turn this into a TEA party sounding board.

  • RPM drop then stall in automatic vehicle?

Helped a friend jumpstart her car this morning. it started fine, she started to drive away, and the car stalled. I restarted it for her, and noticed that on start up, it cranks, and RPM dropped really low almost to stall, and then picked back up to idle. I started driving around the parking lot, and as long as i was on the throttle, it was fine, but when i came off the throttle to turn, the RPM went to idle for a few seconds, then dropped off and the engine stalled. i restarted, noticed the same RPM drop, and when i came off the gas again to park, it stalled again in the parking spot.

keep in mind, this vehicle has an automatic transmission. my first thought was maybe her alternator is dead, so the battery wasn't recharging and powering the spark plugs. but i wouldn't have been able to restart twice if that were the case right? i've never seen/heard of this. any ideas would be helpful. thanks!

  • naming a son "Stoney"?

i was talking with my boyfriend the other day about possible names for future children. I told him I liked the names Stoney and Colton, i thought they sounded like good, strong names, like something a star linebacker would be called. He said they're too redneck and anyone outside of Texas would make fun of the kids. He even said that if i named a child Stoney, he would call him "Pebbles" for his whole life (this coming from a college graduate, 22-year-old...lol)

Anyway, aside from the story. What do you think of those names, and what state/region are you from?

  • Do other nations value thier "founding fathers" like America does?

In America every political debate has someone involved trying to interpret how the founding fathers would handle the situation. I'm just curious if other nations have the same obsession with the opinions of thier nation's founder(s) when deciding on modern issues.

  • big block v. small block?

What do the terms big block and small block refer to? Is it a displacement thing, because I know you can have two engines with the same number of cylinders but one is a "big block" and one is a "small block" ? Thanks.

  • Could a nuclear Iran bring stability to the world?

just a random, undeveloped idea that I had earlier today.

our last big ideological war was when we were fighting communism during the cold war. sure there were still plenty of unconventional conflicts (vietnam and korea just to name a couple) but these were overshadowed by the conventional, nuclear threat that the Soviet Union provided.

so, would a nuclear Iran provide the same conventional shadow? the terrorists do not have the ability now to fight conventionally, and America is still trying to figure how to fight unconventionally. would allowing Iran to develop nuclear weapons and renewing our MAD policy force the extremeists towards a more conventional style of warfare where we are more capable?

i understand the two ideologies and cultures are vastly different and we can't just slap the Cold War doctrine on this conflict as a template. but i was just interested in what others thought on this subject.

  • first person accounts from cold war era?

just looking for any personal stories from the cold war era. feelings during the space race, watching the berlin wall fall, etc. i would especially like to hear from anyone who served in germany, guarding the gap. this is all just to satisfy my own curiosity about this era, being born in the late 80's i missed this influential part of our history and would like to learn what it was like. any personal stories or recommendations of books with good, true, first person accounts are greatly appreciated. thanks y'all :)

a few days a ago my breast was sore and tender to the touch. i thought first it was muscle soreness becuase i had done an upperbody workout earlier that day. however, after a few days, the tenderness is still there. i noticed a lump maybe an inch across in the top left (outside near the armpit) could this just be a swollen lymph node or is it something i should really be concerned about. the other boob doesnt have the "lump"

  • a quick little survey...?

im looking to see if there is any correlation between the political party a person is affliated with and their approach to different problems, please help by answering the following questions.

    1) political party

    2)age/race/gender

    3)occupation

4)your neighbor was recently laid off from his job. his wife stays at home to raise their three young children. he wont say anything, but his wife tells you they are having trouble with money, and wont be able to pay both thier mortgage and electric bills that month. what do you do?

    5) your elementary-school age son comes home from school and explains that his teacher told the class that christmas isn't just about Santa Claus and presents, and proceeds to tell the Christian version of the Christmas story. what do you do?

6)your daughter came home from college for thanksgiving with her new boyfriend who is of a different race, how do you react?

    7) you find out that one of your employees is an illegal immigrant. he is a hard worker and a true asset to your company.

8)you come across Osama bin Laden in the street (this one is very farfetched...but just pretend it was possible)

    9) your son who is about to graduate high school and has a full ride three prestigious universities, tells you he decided to join the military.

  • what would be the international backlash if the US withdrew from the UN?

The UN is obviously no longer very helpful to our interests. they refused to support us in a self-defense mission in the middle east, and are attempting to further sap our national sovereignty (search Global Poverty Act and look at its roots in the UN). The organization seems to be more harmful and restrictive than helpful to us as a nation. it seems like a good time to cut our losses and separate from this dysfunctional family we created after WW2, but what would such an action do to our standing on the world stage?

  • is diplomacy the right answer in this situation?

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081029/ap_on_re_mi_ea...

so syria wants us to apologize for our actions? but we really shouldn't be sorry about defending ourselves and our interests in the region. what is a good way to handle the situation so that we dont completely alienate the syrian gov't, but also dont send the message that we will let foreign governments dictate our defense operations

    4.provide for the common defense

    5.promote the general welfare

  • when assuming a new leadership position how do you balance implementing your ideas and continuity?

If you assume a leadership position in a unit where you feel things aren't going as they should (not necessarily going to drive the unit into the ground but not operating how you think is best) how do you balance implementing your style of getting the job done and maintaining some continuity. do you feel one can be sacrificed for the other? for example, if you replace a former leader who let things be pretty lax, morale is decent and work is getting done. But you feel efficiency is low for what it could be, and want to change the work environment. any personal examples would be awesome.

  • if you could engineer the ideal president...?

if you could combine the policies/aspects of any former US presidents to make the ideal president, who/what would you choose.

example: reagan's economics, teddy roosevelt's foreign policy, jefferson's states' rights.

even if you disagree with me, i still just want to hear people's opinions. thanks!
