  • How can I print wirelessly to a wired printer (but there's more to it)?

So, I have a desktop running Windows XP, which is what the printer is attached to. I have a broadband ADSL modem, and a wifi router attached to the modem. My laptop and my netbook connect wirelessly to the router so than I can go online. However, none of these computers can see each other, they just see the Netgear router and the internet.

My wired desktop just sees the broadband router.

So, whenever I try to share the printer, it doesn't work, because my laptop, for example, doesn't even see that there's another computer there, let alone use a shared printer. Sharing the printer only worked once, when my old router died and I had to connect the broadband directly to the laptop using a network cable, but all I had to do there was share the printer, not set up a network or anything, the laptop automatically saw the network. Now that the router is in between the laptop and the broadband, it just won't see anything.

Do I have to set up another network from the wired pc? I'm a bit hesitant to do that 'cos I'm scared of messing up my broadband settings (it's been a traumatising month for me, after a lightning strike took out my modem and my NIC, and they had to be replaced, and then the router crapped out).

I suppose I could keep using dropbox, but I'm curious as to whether anyone has ever had this problem, and if they solved it.

  • Should I always upgrade my drivers, even though Vista says they're ok?

I have an Acer 5735, which I bought in '09, and I have a program called DriverBoost which is supposed to tell me which drivers need upgrading. Recently I've been having random cutouts of my wifi, and I thought I'd upgrade the drivers, but both Microsoft Upgrade and this DriverBoost program says I don't need to upgrade the drivers on the wifi card (even though I've never upgraded the drivers, and they're dated '08).

I'm not sure that the cutouts are being caused by my wifi card, it could be the router or even our crappy broadband, but still aren't you supposed to upgrade drivers regularly? Though I've heard horror stories of people having to roll back to a previous version, and I don't want to mess things up.

So, what do you think, risk it or not?

  • What does a director say to end a scene on a TV show?

I'm writing a story where a character is in a tv show; how does a scene end during filming? I vaguely remember on Supernatural when they did a meta episode there was a bell ringing, and someone said, 'we're clear!'

Or am I mixing it up; do directors still yell, 'cut'?

  • Which Don Giovanni on DVD has the best Commendatore scene?

What I'm looking for is a production of Don Giovanni either on DVD or on youtube in which the Commendatore scene is most dramatic - musically, I mean, not necessarily visually. For example, I have this version (http://www.amazon.com/Mozart-Don-Giovanni-Peter-Ma... with Peter Mattei, and while he's a really good Don Giovanni, I feel the climactic Commendatore scene was kind of light and rushed.

I'm ashamed to say my favourite to date has been the scene filmed for Amadeus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxcjxN0rPzs), and I often wish they'd filmed the whole thing!

So, can anyone direct me to something similar?

  • Why are people downgrading from Windows 7?

I've seen quite a few questions recently from people wanting to downgrade from Windows 7 - what's wrong with it? Is it (gulp) worse than Vista? I'm asking because at some point I want to buy Windows 7 for my Vista laptop, but not if 7 is massively flawed.

  • How long would it take someone to learn to drive a manual transmission?

Ok, this wouldn't be someone who doesn't know how to drive, but a person who already can drive automatic cars but needs to drive a car with a manual transmission.

I'm writing a story and my character needs to learn this in a short time - but how short is feasible?

    Thanks!

  • What would you have added to the Return of the King Movie?

Don't get me wrong, I loved all 3 movies and have watched them many times. I also love the original Novel and have read it many times - I agree with most of what Peter Jackson put in and left out.

But I feel that in The Return of the King, for example, he could have included:

    a) a glimpse of the palantir in Denethor's room, so that we understand what happened to him

    b) more of a pause between Frodo being stung and Sam running off.

So go on: what do you think should have been included that wasn't?
