  • What is the business concept of selling at expensive prices?

Expensive prices are of course subjective to who's buying but say buying food at a stadium or movie theater. Growing up you could buy $3 beers, popcorn, candy, hot dogs, burgers ect at venues such as these. Now it's common to find $10 beers and food items at these venues. Sure inflation could be a big part of it. But what has always baffled me...and could be a simple dumb question in business is why do they sell at "market price" nearly all the time vs. a lower price say..half the time? Obviously it probably doesn't take much money to produce food at stadiums and movie theaters and similar venues. So why do they sell at say 500% of production costs? Sure the prices are set at what most people are wiling to pay. But say they lowered their prices to %200 of production costs. Aka $5 beers, hot dogs, burgers, vs the normal $10 ones. Wouldn't lowering their prices spur much more purchases by consumers to offset the lower values? Many more consumers who are watching their wallets would say "oh wow that's cheaper than I thought, I guess I'll buy a beer or two" where as they wouldn't if it was at the normal outrageous prices.

I guess the point of what I'm trying to get at is why would a business venue elect to sell something at market value vs selling something at a lesser price but getting much more sales as a result of the lesser price. Ex: Stadium sells normal 10,000 $10 beers =$100k profit but could sell 25,000 $ beers= 125k if they lowered it. Is there some theory to this?

  • Am I combining these simple probabilities right?

I read somewhere that the odds of someone dying by heart disease in their life is 1/5 and the odds of dying by cancer is 1/7, the odds of stroke is 1/23. So if I want to find the probability of dying by any one of those do I do this?

    5+7 = 12

    5*7 = 35

so the odds of dying by either cancer or heart disease is 12/35

    now stroke

    (12*23)+(1*35) = 311 --> numerator

    (35*23) = 805 --> denominator

so the odds of any average joe dying by either heart disease, cancer, or a stroke sometime in their life is 311/805 = 38.6% chance.

Did I do this right? If not how do you combine probabilities?

Basically I multiplied the numerator of the first ratio with the denominator of the second and the numerator of the second ratio with the denominator of the first. This got the numerator of the resultant ratio. Then I multiplied the two denominators of the ratios to get the denominator of the resultant ratio. I assume this would continue for any number of probabilities you want to combine.

  • How to get checked for heart disease (I'm 25)?

I'm a 25 year old male about 6'0 215lbs (180lbs lean weight) because I use to lift a lot of weights and I'm fairly physically active. My grandparents all except one all died in their early 60's (when I was 5 years old) because of stroke or heart disease and It's always been on my mind if I should go in and get any checks. I want to catch it early if I'm more prone to heart problems. I got my first cholesterol check last summer during a basic physical and it came back normal but I'm thinking of doing another physical this month. Is there a way I can do more in depth screening or a heart check up that's not too costly? Wouldn't my health insurance cover preventative heart related stuff at my age? I'm not sure how expensive it would be to just get a basic heart screening or check for early signs of heart disease/heart problems. Should I see a primary care doctor or cardiologist?

  • Why would a girl do this?

I went on a trip with a group of friends and met a polish girl (through mutual friends) and hit it off with her. I'd always catch her looking at me and stuff and we made eye contact a lot. I talked to her quite a bit too. We went to this party and came back to our motel and we made out in my motel room. As things got more heated she suddenly stopped and said she doesn't want to get attached since she leaves back to Poland in April. I told her I understand that but I live in the here and now and I told her I really liked her. She said "some good girl will come along for you some day" and that she needed to leave so I let her leave. I left things at that but the next day her friends told me she really likes me and is just scared and I should ask her out. So later the next day I did and got her number but she acted all distant and disinterested and had guarded body language when we were hanging out watching the superbowl with friends. . Like she wouldn't talk to me or ask me questions, no flirting, she kept looking at her watch and wanted to go home. She was completely different. Why would a girl who supposedly likes someone excitedly agree to go on a date but act all disinterested when sitting with them?

  • Can my employer do this?

Just graduated from college and I'm an Information Technology employee/consultant with exempt status. My company makes us log our hours into a time card daily and the general policy is to work no less than 40 hours. Most weeks this is not a problem but there have been a few weeks where I'd come in a few hours late or leave a few hours early because of a doctors appointment or other personal errands I'd need to make before most closing hours. Usually I'd do my best to make up these hours over the week but sometimes it'd come Friday (when timesheets are due) and I'm one or two hours short. At first I was honest and submitted my timesheet with say 37 or 38 hours instead of the usual 40. But when I did they kicked it back to me and said I can't submit it with less than 40 hours and made me take PTO (which I have not much left) for those few hours.

So now I'm under the impression if I'm in that situation (if I don't fudge an hour or two) I get punished taking PTO. (we get 4 hours PTO every 2 weeks). The thing is, I can't make up hours the following week or even on the weekends since they don't allow even IT employees to do additional hours at home off site (even though we get take home laptops with all our work on it). So say even if I work a 50 hour week one week those hours aren't compensated in anyway which sucks on my part.

I did some research and I guess this is legal for what my employer is doing, they are just not allowed to deduct pay for those few hours.

I was just wondering if this is typical of most employers or only a few stingy ones have these kind of policies?

  • Is using my friends resume template wrong?

My friend/roommate is helping me apply to some jobs and wanted to see my resume so I gave it to him and he critiqued it and helped me change some things and emailed his resume as an example. So I decided to just re-do my resume using his resume "template" and I filled the rest of my job experience, strengths, abilities, and everything else in my own words. It took me 3 or 4 hours to do. I then sent it back to him to critique one last time and he flipped out at me and is now upset that I am using the same template he used. I didn't think twice it would be a big deal and it logically made sense to me as I assumed he used a template off Microsoft word or some other common resume template. To save time and because It utilized space much better so I chose it. I naturally did not think this was an issue since everything else is unique in my own words. He's now mad at me saying I stole his work. Is what I did wrong? I just don't understand if so. Resume templates are all over the internet.

  • Time to call it quits?

I went on 3 dates with this girl and we're both 24. She's attractive and was an athlete in college but she's sorta a tomboy. The first date went well, we talked for hours and I walked her to her car and she gave me a ride home. However there was no kiss. Second date we went to play pool and tried to escalate a little (playfully bumping into her or teasing her) however she never reciprocated any of my playful touches and she was way more into playing pool than the actual date it seemed. I was put off and she texted me when I got home asking if everything was ok. I told her I was put off and she said she just likes to go slow. Ok no big deal....

A week goes by and she texts me everyday (out of the blue sometimes) and eventually asks me out to a movie. She texts me though that she's going to wear sweatpants (what does that mean?) and I just said ok. So we go to see James Bond and I put the arm rest up (should be a big hint right?) but she just sits there with her arms crossed the whole time and her breath smelled so I didn't make any moves. I walk her to her car and she says "thanks for the movie" gives me a hug and doesn't offer me a ride home or anything like last time. It's been 4 days and we both have not texted each other. I figure it's time to call it quits?

My main question is, why would a girl show interest in me all week, ask me out to a movie date and then blatantly show up in sweat pants and smelly breath (not the case the previous two dates). I feel like she was using me for a free movie?

  • Was this pretty crappy of her? She lead me on...no?

So this cute girl I went on a first date with last week agreed to a 2nd date (tonight) and we've been texting all week. She seemed pretty interested in me and always seemed to text me back. She last texted me last night confirming my date plans after I was asleep:

Her: Sound's awesome! How was work today?? I got locked out of my car :(

So this morning I wake up to 3 additional missed texts from her saying:

    Her: good morning

Her: So I really want to be honest with you and I think we should be friends

Her: If you want to be friends, I'm totally willing to hang out with you

Is it just me or do I have a right to feel pretty lead on here? In general, if someone is not interested in continuing to date, usually they just don't reply to your messages. I just feel like I was a 2nd option or she just genuinely was screwing with me. I just replied in a way to play it off, was this the right approach?

Me: I thought we were already friends.....what are you talking about?

    Me: I can't make tonight, I'll ttyl

    Her: No worries.

    Girls what do you think?

  • Who won the second debate?

I thought both candidates were pretty even. Obama was better than the first and Romney the same as the first...so does that mean Obama wins since his bar was set much lower?

  • Should I trade this in fantasy football?

Should I trade Rashard mendenhall and AJ green for Adrian peterson, dez bryant, patriots d/st and kevin kolb? I have packers d/st and stafford/luck for qb's. This is my first year doing fantasy and I'm not sure what are smart trades and what are not. Just wondering.

  • Why are the mlb playoff games during the week days?

I want to watch the Nationals but each game seems to be during the day when I'm at work. This doesn't make any sense from a marketing and fan turnout perspective. Why did they schedule playoff games during the day?

  • Should I participate in my employee stock purchase plan?

I just started a new consulting job for a small company a few months ago out of college and I can't participate in my 401k until 6 months in. Anyway I've just been saving at least 30% of my monthly earnings and eventually will put it into an emergency savings money market account once I've saved enough which will probably take a year or so. My company was acquired by HP a year ago and HP is offering an employee stock plan. However I follow the markets and I definitely would not invest in HP right now. I was wondering if I should hold off on this stuff and just focusing on saving as much money as I can for now before I invest in stuff. I am just not confident in the direction HP is going, their stock has plummeted and maybe I'll invest if they show signs of turning around. Is this a wise decision?

  • Need help making a budget?

I just graduated college in May and started my job 3 weeks ago. I received my first pay check today of about $1750 after taxes and insurance and decided it'll be smart to start a budget. I receive my checks bi weekly. I guess I'll use Microsoft excel. I don't know a good template to set up. I guess make one that makes sense to me? Anyway, my starting salary is $64,000/year and my student loan debt is $14,000 and I just took out a credit card at best buy to purchase a $1200 TV since my new place needed one and I didn't have the money to buy one at the time and I spent $250 on work clothes so I need to pay that bill. Best buy gives me 18 months to pay off the tv with no interest and the minimum monthly payment is $25 but I plan on paying that off in 5 months at least. I won't be able to take advantage of my company's 401k plan until 6 months in and they match 4%.

I guess my main question is, what percentage breakdown should I make in my budget? I figure about 25 to 30% should be emergency savings, at least 10% retirement, 20% investment savings (when I plan to invest) 20% living expenses including food and 20% to pay my debts. Any thoughts or advice?

  • Will the health care ruling ruin Romney's election chances?

why or why not? I think it would have helped Romney if the ruling overturned the law but it didn't so it seems to help Obama. What about if the economy is still stalled like today's job report shows? What do you think the election picture is?

  • Do the Nationals have a chance to stay good?

I'm a Nationals fan and they've been winning games and doing better this season than they have in all of their past seasons. However if they actually make the playoffs, could they become a regular playoff team or will they sink back to mediocrity next season because all of their good players leave? If their season is successful will all of their players leave to teams with more money? This is my worry. How can the Nationals become a good team year to year?

  • Could modern cruise ships be sunk with one torpedo?

I was just on a 4 day Carnival cruise and the ship I was on was nearly 900 ft long. I was just wondering if today's ships could be sunk with one torpedo. It's claimed that it's very hard to sink modern cruise ships so I was just wondering.

I'm sure modern torpedos can sink them but what about a U-boat torpedo?
