Aussie mum

Married, educated and working mother with four children living in country Western Australia with a menagerie of healthy and spoilt rotten pets. Generally positive person, healthy and thankful. I really enjoy being a mum, gardening and life in general. I believe in Karma and although my life hasn't been textbook or easy, I try to see the positive in all. Through hardships we become more understanding.

  • To go or not to go...?

I have three small children at home, aged 6,5 and 3. We are settled in a nice farming town on an acre block with pets and green grass. I work part time. Now hubby wants to go back up north for a year to increase his chances of promotion...(he has a good job but wants a promotion, which is hard to secure in our town) but that means packing up house, moving (what to do with lots of pets..) new school, small and most likely old and grotty accommodation with no backyard for the kids, hot sweltering heat.... I know it could be a good learning experience for the kids, but I'm not sure if it's worth all the stress and worry! I've lived up north before, so I know what to expect... and there's not much to do. Do you think our 2 dogs (rhidgeback and irish wolfhound) would cope with the heat?

My question: Would you do it?

  • weeping cherry and flowering peach tree dying.WHY?

I have a weeping cherry and flowering peach tree, both planted 2 years ago in a new garden. Soil is sandy/clay, added soil conditioner and some old lawn clippings at planting. They are both surrounded by lots of roses and on reticulation. Soil is moist, roses look very healthy and flower abundantly. Both trees looked stunning last year, but the peach tree only came back with 1/2 branches this spring and the cherry flowered but is now rapidly dying with leaves browning and falling, branches wilting. Roses receive regular fertilising with dynamic lifter/roses. I sprayed both trees in winter with mangoceb(?) could this have caused problems? Could it be the roses? Do these trees need acidic or alkaline soil? They are in a northern aspect, full sun. They do receive wind but the peach only came back half after winter.. yet has some new shoots growing. Ideas?? We are in South Western Australia.. and I am at a loss of what to do!

  • Why does the world turn a blind eye to child sex slavery??

I just read this article on child sex slavery in Cambodia, where thousands of children as young as 5 are forced to 'service' men every night. Some children are in so much pain they do not speak. The main offenders, it stated, were in fact Cambodians themselves.

This happens in many countries, yet this is one issue no government is willing to act upon with any real conviction. Why not? How much longer can the world turn a blind eye to these practices?

  • Do you think it's ok for gay men to adopt children?

I strongly feel it should not be allowed. Children have rights too.. the right to have a mother at least, and be raised by both sexes. I know there's lots of children out there without parents, or with only one, I just don't think 2 gay men make the best role models, especially for adopted children. What do you think?

  • Boundary fencing 'smart dog' static pulse dog collars?

We are looking at maybe getting a pet containment system which works by radio signal and static pulse, which stops dogs from leaving the property. We have farm fencing, and our dog needs to be contained. If you've used / are using it, what are your thoughts?

  • what do you think about training dogs with prong collars?

We've got a 12 wk old pup (Australian Kelpie X Ridgeback) that is too young for dog training (16wks) but we've been training her at home. We have just over an acre block, with farm type fencing so this pup needs to be trained well. I agree with Ed Frawley's training method (see link) of using prong collars, I think if used correctly they inflict much less damage than remote collars or chokers.. yet my husband thinks it's unnecessary and cruel. This dog is growing large quickly and with three small kids I really want to train her effectively.. what do you think?

(Pls no smart alec comments about sterilising our pup.. she will be done, as all our animals are, when she's old enough.)
