VISTA security won't let me open password-protected documents?
maybe it's not vista's problem rather the security that comes with it.
i'll try to make it short.....
my XP laptop from 2004 died this september. Thank goodness i have a home computer with XP on it, Dell, from 2002. Also have a new (2007) ACER home computer, it came with VISTA. When i brought the laptop to computer tech for fixing, I turned on the ACER(2007) for the first time.
A friend and i email using password protected WORD documents. On the ACER (2007) home computer, on VISTA, all i had to do to get around the 'security' problem was disable ALL the firewall protection and then suddenly i could open my password documents. I think it was Symantec; could be AVG or Norton's. not positive.
meanwhile...... wait for thanksgiving day sale to get new laptop. was first in line at office depot for nice new HP laptop. Computer tech down the street said he could wipe VISTA and put on XP, which is what he also did for my ACER(2007) ((while the two computer were both in the tech shop, I was using the old DELL from 2002)).
when i went to pick it up the flashy new laptop, he said that this version of VISTA wouldn't allow him to "download drivers" or whatever, and something about the right 'fit' with the internal devices (not sure what that's all about) so that he COULD give it a different OS. (perhaps in the year between 2007 and 2008, microsoft people figured something out and now force you to pay for drivers~!).
FIRST question, why did the home computer from 2007/ACER allow him to wipe VISTA and give me XP and why won't the new (2008) laptop let him do the same?
SECOND question, when i tried to open a password-protected document from the new laptop, from the original email location (earthlink), it would not allow it, but then i forwarded it to yahoo but still could not open, so i know it's not an email security problem.
I went to the control panel to find the firewall settings but it's not the same... it looks different... and there is no option to let me 'disable' anything for even 15minutes/30minutes/60minutes like i used to...
Is there ANY way to get my VISTA to let me open a friggin' document that is password protected???? it's just a WORD document~!!!!!
i'm going out of town for 3 weeks otherwise i'd ask the tech to do whatever he could to wipe VISTA and give me XP (I don't have time to wait, now that i've found this out)...(i will do the XP thing when i get back)
For now, i just want to open my d@#$%^ documents on my laptop~!!
2 AnswersSecurity1 decade agooutlook express i want to move to another 'drive'?
i will try to make this short. on my home computer/desktop, I accidentally clicked on the outlook-express button in my quick-access tray. i thought i had disabled the accounts... but had not :-( i stopped the download of mail in time to save 1,700 msgs but 800 are already there now :-( problem is i didn't want to do that until i've set up my new laptop.... with outlook express... how can i get the outlook mails saved, on to a CD or whatever, and then, transferred to my laptop? should i ask a tech shop to do this?
I also have a problem with "Earthlink Mail." Let me start by saying that I "copy" and "pasted" a folder/icon named "Mail Backup" from my Desktop(screen) into my External Drive (G:) that sits on top of my work table. (I thought this would be the way to re-locate the "destination" folder of my Outlook Express mail). Apparently I was wrong. Somehow, I believe because of this move, my AVG Email Scanner was activated which in turn activated my EarthlinkMail (box that works very similar to OutlookExpress and brings email into your drive so you don't have to be online)... I was watching the AVG thing "scan and download" thinking, oh, okay, this is my email getting scanned, this is good. But lo and behold, ALL 1,700 emails were sent to this EarthlinkMail place, which I had apparently set-up but about 4 years ago thought I disabled.... Now my Earthlink ON-LINE in-box is free and clear while my emails all sit in my EarthlinkMail box... problem again is I'd rather have done this from my new laptop (still at the tech shop), not on the desktop/CPU.... I have been able to disable future "accidents" and I also un-clicked the box marked "delete from server after download"... had I done that before, I would not be here. I may have to call Earthlink for the answer, thought someone here might know. Thanks....
2 AnswersProgramming & Design1 decade agoDo you live in PORTUGAL? Do you live in Funchal, Madeira?
I looked at the website for tourism in Funchal but I cannot find anyone to send me any brochures or maps. Only to download. Which is not a problem, I just want a paper copy to read. Do you live in Funchal Madeira and you can send me a brochure? Thank you.
3 AnswersPortugal1 decade agoBlackberry users - PLEASE HELP - part THREE - why do i need a Blackberry??
Is there an alarm on it? What about voice recording, like when I haven’t got a piece of paper handy? I’ve read mostly glowing reviews but question these particular ‘negatives’ – There is a clicking sound in the speaker when connecting. What is that? Why can’t you access a variety of websites? Battery life sucks? Is there a charger? Who offers the best BB contract? Is a BB going to work overseas? Right now I’m on the pay-as-you-go plan with Cingular. Spend a lot of money buying those dam scratch-off cards. I have previously “asked” about overseas cell phones. If you have exp. using the BB overseas, would you please tell me what you did with it overseas (talk on the phone? Search internet? Text messaging back to the US? Check email?) Bottom line: Why would I need a blackberry? Can someone please tell me what they do with their BB so maybe I can understand the excitement and understand why I might need one. Otherwise I use my laptop but unfortunately it doesn't fit my pants pocket...!!
1 AnswerPDAs & Handhelds1 decade agoBlackberry or iPhone or regular phone IN EUROPE?
if i'm going to Europe for 6 months, all over Europe, should i get blackberry or iPhone or just a regular typical cell phone? i would want to do *very little* emergency email/internet, but mostly calling and texting.
Also, should i do this in the states before i go, or in europe? that will get me a foreign ph# sure, and for my mom, the calls will be $$$$$, but with a USA phone, i can get a local # but have to get a GMS phone and a contract~! not sure if i want to go down that route again.....
help!!
2 AnswersPDAs & Handhelds1 decade agoCell phones in Europe. I'm going to be working all across Europe for 6 months and need advice on the best cell
I'm going to be working and going around many countries. Italy the most. Then, Spain, Greece, and other minor locations. I know my pay-as-you-go phone does not work, but I did use to have a GSM phone (but pulled out of the contract early) so it's not easy to go back with the same carrier.
I was thinking of getting the phone in Italy, but then my mom's calls to me will be atrocious.
My aunt and uncle use Skype but i'm not sure how that works. Maybe i should do that.
What i'd really like is a cell phone that does text and is good for all the countries I am going to.
All advice welcome.

I have a question on this website and i want it to remain here a few more days; i haven't got enough answers. Does anyone know how to do this? I got this message from Yahoo but where is the "action" button? Am i looking for something that isn't there?
"We know, time flies. So, we wanted to give you this heads up. So, what now? If you want more answers, you can extend the deadline. Just click on the question above, then breathe new life into it by using the Action Bar to extend it for another 4 days."
4 AnswersYahoo Answers1 decade agoI am a US citz. I would like to move to England near York or Northumberside. Is this a good town for tourism?
I have visited York on one occasion and would like to live there and work somewhere in tourism. I have tourism experience but not in a travel agency. (I get job notices of Travel Agency jobs but i'm not experienced in that.) How expensive is York? How difficult is it to get employed - should I visit again, for example for one week or two weeks, and spend time job hunting while I visit? Seeking employment from the US is more complicated - and I have to convince them that I'm the "one" so they can sponsor my work VISA-! I have a degree and could work in HR or Guest Service also.
2 AnswersOther - United Kingdom1 decade agoWhich of the various TEFL/TESOL courses are best?? I have been to many websites. Experienced opinion please!?
I have compared price and schedule of BridgeTEFL courses in Denver and London. I have been to an Oxford Seminars seminar and am not interested in that. I am open to online certification or the combined in class/online. I am open to Denver or London. Perhaps Barcelona, too, but not Prague or anywhere else. Which company offers the best training and best job-placement afterward, and for a great price? $3,000 is the most I can afford. Thanks.
