  • Why p(T|I) is not necessarily equal to p(I|T)?

We all have heard statements of the type: “95% of all inmates in prison have eaten tomatoes.” What does this statement – assuming it is correct – appear to imply? Letting: Event T refer to the eating of tomatoes, and event I refer to membership in the population of prison inmates, discuss why p(T|I) is not necessarily equal to p(I|T), and compute both. Assume: p(T)=0.80 and p(I)=0.02.

  • Should my girlfriend and I call it quits?

Quick background: We have been dating for 7 months. 99.9% of the time it’s awesome! I love being with her, we have tons of fun together and we generally treat each other with lots of respect. However, on Halloween we got into a huge fight, where many hurtful, spiteful words were exchanged. It got to the point where I had to leave the party completely in order to calm the situation down. We worked it out and have been fine since...until New Years Eve rolled around. We found ourselves in a similar situation and again, I left in order to diffuse the situation. Both instances we were drinking. We have had our arguments and disagreements when sober, but those usually are resolved quickly and respectfully. I am not sure how to approach the situation. My parents do not think the relationship is healthy, but its hard to agree with them when the majority of the time we are not fighting at all. My girlfriend and I have discussed and are both willing to give up drinking completely. My biggest fear is what if it happens again? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

  • What is the unknown anion?

solution contains one of the following anions: Cl-, Br-, I-, SO42-, C2O42-, CO32-, NO3-. The solution does not liberate a gas when treated with dilute sulfuric acid. The solution does not reduce an acidic solution of potassium permanganate. The solution does produce a white precipitate when treated with a Ba2+/Ca2+. This precipitate is insoluble in 6M HCl. Identify the anion and briefly state how you determined this from the data given. If more than one anion fits the test results presented, what test(s) could be performed to distinguish them?

  • Thin-walled pressure vessel.?

A circular shaft with radius r is subjected to a torque T. The modulus of elasticity and Poisson’s ration of the shaft are E and v respectively. Show how a single strain gage mounted in the 45 degree direction with respect to the longitudinal axis can be employed to determine the applied torque. In other words, write T in terms of E, v, r and e, where e is the reading of the strain gages.
