  • Possible Ivy League Chances?

    I have a 3.97 unweighted GPA and a 4.2 weighted.

I am ranked first out of 419 students.

I attend a low performing school, though.

I have taken 4 AP classes so far (2 sophomore year, 2 junior year) and I plan on taking 3 next year.

My high school offers early release for juniors and seniors, so I only took five classes my junior year and am only taking 4 classes next year (senior year).

However, I am also taking Spanish and French online.

I plan on taking courses at my local community college. For most ivy league schools, these credits will not transfer, but will it help my transcript anyway? I plan on attending law school and the classes are all law-related, though some focus more on the law enforcement aspect. The classes are free, but will be extremely time consuming. Do you think this will help me get accepted into top universities?

I took the SAT and received a 1940, but I have spent an extraordinary amount of time studying and have since taken 8 practice tests and scored between a 2100 and 2400 each time (I scored a 2400 the last 3 times).

I have not yet taken the ACT or SAT subject tests, but I plan to do so in October.

I volunteer in a law office and know they will write me a recommendation.

I am involved in my city's youth city council and National Honor Society, but other than that I do not have many extracurricular activities.

I have not had a job yet, but plan on working when school starts.

BASICALLY, I really want to attend Columbia. I would like to know if I stand a chance, if:

    - I, presumably, score at least a 2150 on the SAT.

    - I have a 3.97 unweighted GPA and 4.2 weighted GPA

    - I volunteer at a law office

    - I take AP classes

    - I take extra classes at my local community college, but will not receive credit

Also, will taking early release harm my chances of acceptance, even though I will be working, taking community college courses, and online courses?

Sorry this is so long, I just wanted to make sure to include necessary information. Thank you!

  • Getting admitted to Harvard?

Okay, so I would like some opinions on what you think the chances two different people have of getting accepted into Harvard.

Student A has a lot of volunteer experience. He is on the junior city council, the school student council, and is a member of the Junior Statesmen of America at his high school. However, he does not have the best grades. He has less than a 3.5 cumulative weighted GPA. He takes AP classes, but receives unweighted Cs. His SAT score was a 1650. No doubt he could get great references from various city employees including the mayor. He does not have a "real" job, but he babysits occasionally and tutors.

Student B also has volunteer experience, but not as much. She is also a member of the junior city council. She is a part of National Honors Society at the high school and she has experience with various school clubs, though she did not participate in any other than NHS during her junior year. She has played soccer for the city for years, but not during her sophomore and junior year. She did cheer leading, but only her freshmen year. She has excellent grades, she had over a 4.0 cumulative GPA. She also takes AP classes, but she has early release from school. Her SAT score was an 1890. She could also get exceptional references. She does not have any sort of job.

Both of the students are currently juniors, but will be seniors in August. They attend the same high school and that school ranks the students by cumulative weighted GPA. Student A is ranked at 80 of 419 in the junior class while student B is ranked at 1 of 419. Neither student has a legacy at Harvard or any other Ivy League university. Neither student is wealthy and they are from a small town that has likely never had a student attend Harvard.

    Honest opinions are appreciated!
