  • Double stroller for a 20 month old and newborn?

I am looking for a double stroller (tandem) that will work for a 20 month old and newborn that is reliable, affordable, and will fit in the trunk of my car, Toyota Yaris. The trunk size is comparable to a Carolla. We have an Evenflo carseat and would like to adapt to that, so Graco's are out. Peg Perago's are SO expensive. I really like the idea of the BabyTrend Sit 'n Stand Double and the Kolcraft Contours Tandem, but both are only available in the US. I could have them shipped to Canada, but then I'm looking at hefty taxes and customs costs (not to mention that most website are not fairly trading the dollar.)

Anyone have any advice? I want my daughter to be comfortable, and I want to easily put my new infant in and out of this stroller.

    Thanks!

  • Can a twin be missed on first ultrasound?

I know it's uncommon and with the research I've done it seems to mostly happen with women who have their ultrasound between 6-9 weeks, but I'm beginning to wonder if maybe something (or someone) was missed.

I had a dating ultrasound at 12 weeks, and asked the technician how many were in their because I had the 'feeling' it was more than one. I started feeling movement last week (18 weeks). I have anterior placenta, which I had in my last pregnancy, and I barely felt any movement the whole time. With this one there is tons of movement, and I'm feeling it in 2 places at the same time, which would make sense if I was further along, but I'm only 19 weeks. I'm feeling movement in my lower left abdomen and under my right ribs.

My midwife noted that at my visit yesterday my uterus is already well above my bellybutton, which is rare at only 19 weeks. I'm short, 5'3, so that might be the reason, but I don't know.

Has this happened to any of you?

  • Pre-eclampsia second time around?

We're pregnant with #2! Wow! We're very excited. However, I'm a bit nervous as well.

With our first I was diagnosed with PIH (pregnancy induced hypertension) and then preeclampsia. I was able to labour and delivery went well. But I was ordered off work early and had to take it easy from about 30 weeks until her birth at 37 weeks.

I am wondering if anyone had preeclampsia for their second pregnancy and how likely it is that it will happen again. I was under a lot of stress in my 3rd trimester last time. Purchased new house, teaching full time, writing/directing/conducting school Christmas program, husband in car accident, etc... So maybe it was just stress? Wondering what others think.

  • 11 month old not pulling self up...?

I'm probably being overly concerned, but as I watch my daughter develop compared to others babies her age I am seeing that she is quite behind in gross motor skills.

She is very social: waves, says "Hi!" and a few other words, communicates wants, and uses some baby sign. She has excellent fine motor skills. But when it comes to crawling, pulling self up, etc...she seems to be stagnant.

She started rolling over quite late; she did roll over a few times at 4 months and then never did it again until 8 months. She has been sitting unassisted since 8 months. Around 10 months she started her own type of crawling, it's a cross between an army crawl and 'the worm', as well as a little bit of hands and knees crawling. She seems to be uninterested in moving around and is happy to just sit and play. She can get from sitting to her stomach but not vice versa. Last week she started taking steps if we hold onto her hands.

I know that all babies develop at their own rate, and that I shouldn't compare babies. However, I am concerned that maybe I should be doing more to help her develop her gross motor skills. We only have laminate/hard wood floors in our home (due to allergies) could this be holding her back?

  • What would you do if these were your in-laws?

My parents live an 18 hour drive away, but are as involved in my 10 month old daughter's life as they can be. They have come to visit twice, staying for 10-14 days each time, call often, email regularly and long to be a bigger part of my daughters life.

My in-laws live 2 1/2 hours away, they have come to visit 3 times, staying a few hours. They rarely call, never email and don't seem all that interested in knowing our daughter. When they come they want to hold her, coo over her and spend time with her, but it is so rare to see them. We have gone to visit a few times, but it is difficult as they have 6 people living in a 900 sq.ft home and it is quite dirty with stuff everywhere, they're not hoarders, but almost!

I love my in-laws and wish that they were more involved. My father in-law has 3 grandchildren that have recently started living with them, but she is the first grand baby on either side. How can I help get more involved?

  • Driving 18 hours with 11 month old!?

For Christmas we will be driving 18 hours to my parent's place. It will be winter conditions, and there will be 3 adult and 1 11 month old in a car. We are trying to figure out the best way to do this. We thought that maybe we should leave at night so that she is able to sleep for much of the drive and then maybe we can drive without stopping to sleep in a hotel, but do lots of little breaks. We also thought that maybe we should leave early the in the morning and stop for the night ... Not really sure what to do. Have you driven long distances with a baby? What worked best for you?

  • When do I stop working?

I'm pregnant with my first, due February 5, 2009. I'm also a primary teacher (grade 2/3). I'm wondering how long I can realistically work for. I know that it's going to depend upon how I feel, but I kind of want an idea of when I should stop working. Primary teaching is very busy job involving being down on the floor, or crouched at desks with students, and doing paper work late into the evening. I realize that I will have to change my teaching style to allow for my growing belly and my comfort, but will I be able to teach up until the end of January?

  • I gained a little, but now I'm losing at 15 weeks?

So, I'm a bit overweight, which means my weight gain should be less than many women. I lost weight in the first 6 weeks (about 3 pounds). By week 14 I had gained the 3 back and put on another 4 making 7 pounds. I've been sick with a cold since Saturday (I'm still eating) and now am 1 pound less than when I got pregnant - meaning I lost 5 pounds in one week. Is this ok?

  • Decongestant anyone?

I'm 15 weeks pregnant and have a bad cold. I haven't been taking anything, but I would love to if there's anything I can take. I'm so stuffed up. Are there any cold medications that I can take. I can suffer through - I'm tough...but if I don't have to that would be great!

  • 13 weeks they couldn't find a heartbeat...?

I went for my first prenatal visit with my midwife today. Everything went well until she looked for the heartbeat. They tried for about 10 minutes but couldn't find anything. I know it's early, and I know that it could just be that baby was hiding, but I'm still worried. I think she sensed that because she told me that it's sometimes hard to find when they're this little. She ordered an ultrasound because she didn't want me to worry until next month when I see her again. I'm able to get in on Friday. Am I over reacting? I just want to be sure that everything is ok.

  • I'm so grumpy I drive MYSELF crazy! How can I get over these mood swings?

I am 14 weeks pregnant and have been grumpy throughout my pregnancy, but the last 2 weeks have been the worst. I'm prone to being somewhat moody anyway, but this is far worse. One minute I'm happy go lucky the next minute I'm so mad! My poor, wonderful husband deals with the brunt of it. I've been treating him horribly! We're under a lot of stress right now. We're in the middle of trying purchase our first house, he's looking for permanent work (he's a supply teacher). But it's no excuse for me being so angry all the time. I don't want to be like this. Does anyone know how I can keep in control of my emotions? Is anyone else going through this?

  • I bought a new crib on Ebay - is the mattress safe?

Yesterday I picked up a brand new crib that I won on Ebay. The couple I bought it from said that they bought it for their daughter but didn't need it (I don't know if they were given another crib or what.) The mattress appears unused. I looked up the company on the internet to see if there were recalls or warnings about the mattress/crib. Nothing negative came up. Do you think it's safe to use the mattress?

  • Are midwife classes covered by insurance?

I'm 12 weeks pregnant and planning to take some classes offered by my midwifery group. The classes are $150. My midwife appointments and services are provided through OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan,) but the classes are not. Am I able to claim them on my health insurance (Manulife - full coverage), or not?

  • Did you feel like you were never going to start showing?

I'm 3 months pregnant and I know it's early to start showing. Did anyone else feel blue because their belly hadn't popped yet? I know it's silly to feel this way, but...it's how I feel.

  • Does the word prego bug you?

I don't know if it's just me being hyper sensitive or hormonal. We recently started telling people that I'm pregnant. I just started my 2nd trimester. People tell people, and the word is getting around. I keep having people send me emails, or call me to tell me "Congratulations! I can't believe you're prego!" Or something to that effect. The word drives me crazy. Is it just me? I don't tell people that the word bothers me. But I find the word offensive. As though it's something dirty, funny, I don't know... I believe that being pregnant is beautiful. And prego just seems derogatory. I figure I'm just being overly sensitive, but does anyone else feel this way?
