  • What are some good etudes?

I play the piano, and am in need of some suggestions. I have already looked at etudes by Bartok, Ligeti, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, and Liszt. I'm looking for something that will contrast my other repertoire and is also virtuostic. (It's for college auditions next December through March)

I cannot do anything by Chopin or Prokofiev, because I am already doing works by them. I know Bortkiewicz and Scriabin also composed several etudes, but I haven't been able to look at them yet. My other repertoire is:

Prelude and fugue no.14 in f-sharp minor, WTC II - J.S. Bach

    Sonata no.14 in c minor, k.457 - Mozart (complete)

    Fantasie in f minor, op.49 - Chopin

    Sonata no.6 in A major (I) - Prokofiev.

I feel like something more light-hearted or playful might be a great contrast, but I am open to other suggestions as well.

Right now I am looking at :

    Liszt

    Paganini etude no.6

    Transcendental Etudes 2,5,7,and 8.

    Rachmaninoff

    Op.39 no. 1,6,8, and 9

    Debussy

Etudes 1, 5, and the etude retrouvee

    Ligeti

    Etude no.8 "Fem"

    All suggestions are appreciated.

  • Help with compositions for other instruments?

I compose a LOT for piano, but I want to start doing compositions for a few other instruments as well.

I'm not too familiar with violin, viola, cello, flute, oboe, and I also want to compose for voices too. What are their ranges, quirks, and what techniques can they and can they not do? (Like violin's multiple notes at once, or pizzicato on stringed instruments in general.) I do not just want a wikipedia article either.

  • Which Piece would be better in this situation?

I am going to be in a church talent show/competition, and I want your opinion on what you think would be the best crowd pleaser. I have Prelude in g minor op.23 no.5 by Rachmaninoff, Liebestraum no.3 by Liszt, and Sonata in c# minor op.27 no.2 III Presto Agitato by Beethoven done and memorized. Each one to perfection. (much pickiness from piano teacher=polished pieces).

  • I there a single music composition software that allow you to input cadenzas? Which ones? How?

I recently composed a piece with 2 cadenzas in it, and I cannot input cadenzas on my software. :( I would really like to be able to input cadenzas, because I'm also composing another piece that has a few cadenzas. Any help is appreciated.

  • What is a good, deep, slow piece?

I need something in a different style, by a different composer, and slow. I need it to be quite tough.

I would like it to be around the same difficulty (maybe a little more difficult) than my other repertoire.

    I am playing:

Prelude and Fugue in a minor - J.S. Bach (There is no BWV number, but it is his longest fugue)

    Sonata in B Flat k.333 - Mozart

    Tarantella S.162 - Liszt

    Un Sospiro - Liszt

    Rondo Capriccioso - Mendelssohn

    Etude op.25 no.11 "Winter Wind" - Chopin

    Etude op.39 no.6 - Rachmaninoff

I want this piece to be 20th Century. (I count Scriabin, Debussy, Bortkiewicz, and others of a similar time as 20th century.

    It is for college auditions.

I am using them for Cleveland Institute of Music, Oberlin, Julliard, Peabody, Roosevelt University, and others similar to these. It must be a substantial work. No waltzes, nocturnes, or etudes.

Give me as many ideas as you can. Ravel is my favorite composer as far as something I want. (No Gaspard de la Nuit.).

It needs to be for piano solo. No arrangements or transcriptions.

It doesn't have to be deep, but I would prefer it

  • What are some good ways to practice La Campanella, and Un sospiro?

I am currently picking conservatory audition repertoire, and for a Liszt etude, my teacher and I are looking at La Campanella (Paganini etudes) and Un Sospiro (3 Grand Concert Etudes), I won't be seeing my teacher for 3 weeks, so she told me to practice each one, and whichever one she thinks I have a better handle on I will do. For un sospiro, my biggest problem is the 3 against 7 in measures 13-20, and in La Campanella,, my bigges issue is the huge leaps in the right hand. Are there any drills or such I can do to help make these 2 pieces better?

    Thanks

  • What are some good lyrical romantic pieces that are 2 to 4 minutes long?

I am looking for a good romantic piece that is lyrical and 2 to 4 minutes long. Diificultywise, just has to be easier technically than Chopin Etudes. Harder than Rahcmaninoff's prelude in C# minor. Schumann and Liszt are two composers I would prefer, but any composer is fine, as long as they're romantic.

I'm thinking of doing a toccata for my next 20th century piece, but I only know 4. 3 of them are my level according to my teacher. (The 4th is Ravel, so I understand)

    2. Prokofiev Toccata

    3. Debussy Toccata from Pour le Piano.

  • What are some good piano pieces for me?

    I'm looking for 2 pieces.

    1. An expressive piece by Liszt.

    2. A Heavier 20th Century piece.

The pieces I have most recently completed are Mozart's Fantasia in D minor and Rachmaninoff's prelude in C# minor. I am about to start Bach's 2nd English Suite(complete), Haydn's sonata in A major I believe it's H. XVI:5 or 7. I want no Bartok. I can't ask my teacher, because I have to start working on them asap, and wont be seeing her for a week.I hope you can help. (no one suggest Clair De Lune, Fue Elise, or the 1st movement of moonlight sonata. I have already learned all those pieces)
