  • I have heard Java is the most marketable programming language from an employment perspective? Agree/Disagree?

Motivation behind this question is that I am trying to improve my career prospects and believe that learning additional programming languages is key to my development. I currently know SQL and VBA.

  • Does anyone remember how Popovich became the Spurs coach?(and his cowardly firing of Bob Hill?)?

I love the Spurs I have been a die-hard fan since before Robinson arrived. But in light of all the attention Pop is getting for this year's Finals run, it needs to be remembered ultimately this man is a 'snake in the grass'. For those of you too young to remember, in 96-97 the Spurs were coming of a 59 win season the in 95-96. Robinson got hurt before the season started and being that he was the Team by himself back in those days, the Spurs struggled to a 3-15 start to the season. Right before the game Robinson was scheduled to return Pop as the GM fired Bob Hill and replaced him as head coach on the sideline. In theory, under Pop with Robinson healthy the Spurs would have an amazing turnaround and the narrative would be all about his great coaching. Instead, Robinson got hurt again after playing just 6 games and the Spurs went onto to have one of the worst records in the NBA that year and inevitably lucked out and got Duncan. Without Duncan, Pop is fired within two years of his firing of Hill and we never hear from him again except as a minor footnote in Spurs history.

Again, I love the Spurs but Pop is no genius, he gets way too much credit for how great Duncan has been. This no media Spurs ethos installed by Pop, actually takes the credit from the players and gives it to the organization. Another very self-servicing manifestation of Pop's legacy, nobody is bigger than the System, but just make to sure when you write about you say 'Pop's system' and give him credit.

My lasting memory of him as a coach will always be the Hill firing and him getting owned by Phil Jackson for three consecutive years. Pop is not in Jackson's league but who is.

  • Every time I log out of hotmail/outlook, the screen is in Russian. Why does it do this/should I be concerned?

I don't speak Russian, I don't read Russian and I've never been to Russia(only reason I know its Russian is because Chrome offers to translate the page for me).

Should I be worried about this? If so, any suggestions for what I should do?

I am running anti-virus but if this is a problem it would not appear the software was effective.

  • Why are the Yankees tightening their purse strings while the Dodgers are spending like crazy?

I understand the obvious that they are two different organizations with different owners and different management. However, while the Yankees now say they can't(or won't exceed) the new cap in years to come, the Dodgers recklessly spend beyond it for the sake of making them relevant.

The Yankees are the greatest sports NAME in any sport period, they can afford anything and winning should know no price too high for them but all of a sudden it does, while someone else outspends them at the same time. It doesn't make sense.

Is it just that the baseball world has been blessed by the ascension of the moron who is Hal Steinbrenner or am I missing something? Please offer an explanation.

  • On a scale of 1 to 10, how awesome is it that the Yanks are acquiring Vernon Wells?

I love the Yankees' thinking in 2013. Our roster isn't full enough of rotting corpses of days gone by stars, let's add another one with another ginormous contract.

Hal Steinbrenner literally might be my favorite person in sports right now just barely edging out Buss's kid and Stephen Jones(Jerry's soon to be failure of a successor).

  • Quants/Stat-heads - your help needed - book & website recommendations?

I've just read - the Signal and the Noise by Nate Silver and have started on Wayne Winston's Mathletics. I read copious amounts of advanced statistical websites for sports. In blog format, the articles read well and are entertaining and informative.

However, the books I mentioned are droll and the respective authors seem to lack the genuine ability to deliver a narrative.

Can anyone recommend books they have enjoyed on similar subjects but with more talented wordsmiths?

  • Laptop won't boot and then Beeping sequence?

My wife's laptop wouldn't boot last night and went to a black screen and a beeping sequence. After investigating it on my laptop, I tried the static discharge method for holding the power button down with the battery removed and still didn't work. I switched her laptop back on to find out the exact beeping sequence(1 long beep, followed by 14 short beeps) and after listening to it repeat this sequence about 5 or 6 times, lo and behold a the COMPUTER BOOTED.

I went into safe mode and backed up all of her files to an external hard drive, but am stuck now because I don't want to turn the computer off until I figure out what went wrong the last time.

Does anyone have a list of BIOS Beep Codes for Insyde version 1.10?(I have searched and searched and come up empty)

Or does anyone know how to access a log of BIOS errors via Windows 7 and without rebooting into BIOS?

  • What is wrong with Mike D'Antoni?

How does this guy still have a job in the NBA? His system has failed in three different cities now(LA, NY, and PHX as well unless you count not being able to get past the conference finals a success).

I don't even have a problem with his system as much as I do with how he comes across. I mean I hate the Lakers and I actually feel bad for them right now, being stuck with this guy. He's got Pau Gasol one of the maybe top 25 or at worst top 40 players in the league and he is constantly throwing him under the bus.

He insinuates the reason they weren't winning before is because Kobe won't pass, and when they start winning he subtly takes credit for his 'suggestions' without acknowledging it has nothing to do with him and is in spite of him.

What do you think? Especially Laker fans, this is miserable.

  • What do you think about the Yanks (allegedly) seeking to void A-Rod's contract?

My opinion is I think it is very hypocritical of the Yankees or the media to even suggest this course of action. Along the lines of 'It's okay if you cheat as long as you're helping us win, but as soon as you can't do that anymore, then you're just a cheater and we want our money back'.

This is not a defense of A-Rod but rather a criticism of the Yanks and the media, if either of those institutions were so impeccably moral. Than the upstanding thing to do would be for the Yankees to vacate the 2008 championship which was in large part because of A-Rod and his cheating.

If the Yankees wouldn't do that, than why would anyone care about their player cheating and wanting recourse for it?

  • Pre-work out stretching regimen - what to do & what not to do? Help please.?

I'm getting on in years, but still play basketball recreationally a couple times a week. Two summers ago, I tore my menicus in my left knee, last year I tore my calf muscle in my right leg. And lately, if I work out on consecutive nights I get pain in my shins(I've had shin splints my entire life(they've just gotten worse over time).

Father time is telling me it's almost time to give up - high impact sports/workouts for my legs but I'm being stubborn so not yet.

Any day I play or workout, I stretch my hamstrings for a minute a piece, then quads a minute each, then hips a minute each, then calves a minute each, and then finish up by stretching my hamstrings once more for a minute each.

This seems to work pretty well, anyone have any suggestions for a stretch I might do for my ankles and my shins?

Any suggestions or opinions are welcome.

  • If Wilt played in today's NBA & was able to perform the same as in 60's, would he the best ever?

I don't like the guy but I think he would be remembered as the greatest ever if he had played in the 90's or 00's.

Also, when answering, please ignore the fact that he wouldn't have nearly remarkable physical specimen today as he was then(this is true of all athletes, via evolution and improvement in conditioning and medical advancements).

His era was much more team oriented before the advent of cable TV, ESPN, and the NBA Marketing machine was born.

In today's NBA he would be applauded for his greatness, ball hogging, and marketability. Kobe is a hero to many, because of this exact same reason.

Holding his numbers constant into today's NBA, Wilt would have been the greatest ever and won several more championships because the NBA/Stern would have wanted him to succeed.

Also, the Celtics wouldn't have enjoyed nearly as much success as the current NBA would have decried the them as boring with their team concepts, like a modern day SA Spurs.

  • In Les Miserables, what is it called when two actors sing over one another? Like Jean Valjean and Jovaert?

Like in the 'Confrontation' scene, they seem to be providing harmony behind the other actor's vocals(and in that scene, they seem to alternate between who is lead and who is the harmony). I'm certain this is intentional, but what is it called?

  • I am very comfortable & gregarious with strangers but awkward with friends. What does that say about me?

I am very self-assured and confident in anonymity, but the more familiar I become with individuals the less I am assured of myself and I perceive the interactions to be less fulfilling for both me and them.

I don't quite understand how this is possible. I prefer to be on my own often and isolate, but then in social situations where every one shares a common thread and I am anonymous, I find myself thriving.

  • Am I crazy or would it be possible, for the Kings to move to Seattle but still play games in Sacramento?

They wouldn't be the first franchise to try this. Seattle gets what they want, Sacramento gets what they want, everybody's happy right.

The owners get to two TV terroritories to broadcast their games in(other owners may not be happy), which could be used to offset any kickback from the cities themselves. Heck, Sacramento I'm sure would be glad to subsidize some of the move to Seattle if they could still retain a team.

They could write up as a 'temporary' deal in recognition for say 5 years or so, until Sacramento could get a new team of their own and if it works out jointly then they could just keep it going into the future.

You would have to think for the future ownership of the Kings/Sonics this would be a no-brainer. They get to make two desperate fan bases happy and sit back in rake in the money. Seattle gets their team half back, Sacramento keeps half their team(at least for 5 years) and everybody wins.

Heck, you retain both names and the uniforms, and let them use the Uniforms when the play in alternate places.

Tell me why this wouldn't work? Anyone? (btw,I have never visited either city and have no rooting interest in its outcome).

I think it's a winner, please tell me if you agree or disagree and why?

  • Why do you think that Jason Garrett doesn't get the credit(or blame) that he deserves?

My take is that Garrett is a terrible football coach, running an antiquated offense that the league figured out long ago.

I think the only reason the Cowboys have had the records they have is because of the talent they have on both sides of the ball, and that the coaches particularily Garrett have gone out of their way to minimize the returns on their talent by making poor decisions.

Garrett's clock management has got to be the worst or next to worst(Andy Reid) in the league. Between this year's, B'more game and last year's AZ game those are two games he lost just because he didn't see the point of using timeouts or downs or remaining time on the clock to improve their field position and get shorter field goal opportunities.

Also, the Cowboys play better when they come out of the 'no huddle' and Garrett isn't calling the plays which isn't a surprise.

For 2 1/2 straight years, he's taken very good to great talent in their prime(Romo, Witten, Ratliff, Ware) and wasted it by playing dumb football.

The only year he had a winning record was as an interim coach, when they went 5-3. The dumb part there was the season was already decided in the first 8 games, we then went 1-7, they should have continued to tank for draft position, but instead he decided to win games against other teams that were tanking to prove he was good.

Please talk me off my Cowboys ledge, and tell me something good about him or conversely confirm for me that he is terrible.
