Why are Quakers so well thought of in the U.S.?
For some reason, Quakers (Friends) are looked on in the U.S. as being good people, but anyone who studies U.S. History knows that they were (and are) the big businessmen of their day (and still some of the richest people in the U.S.). They financed whaling and all sorts of other awful things. Why are some of the worst people ever to walk the earth so well regarded?

1 AnswerPolitics1 decade agoWhile Oil Slick Spread, Interior Department Chief of Staff Rafted with Wife in Grand Canyon?
“Though his agency was charged with coordinating the federal response to the major oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Department of the Interior chief of staff Tom Strickland was in the Grand Canyon with his wife last week participating in activities that included white-water rafting, ABC News has learned.”
Is this guy the Obama Administration’s “Heck of a job Brownie”? Why isn’t this all over the news? Seems like he should meet the same fate as “heck of a job Brownie”.
11 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoWas Obama use of the term "precipice" to describe "health care reform"?
A rare moment of honesty or slip on his part?
"Obama said Democrats were 'on the precipice' of victory, not breakdown."
1 AnswerPolitics1 decade agoPoll of Economists - Why isn't this getting more press?
Why isn't this getting more press or at least discussion on Y!A, whenever someone took a poll of "experts" on Bush it was taken as Gospel.
"Obama, Geithner get low grades from economists: report"
3 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoIs Etta James Racist?
She doesn’t seem to like the new President. I’ve heard that if you don’t like him, say anything negative about him or criticize him, that you are racist.
“Speaking at a Seattle concert earlier this week, Etta said: You guys know your President, right? You know the one with the big ears? Wait a minute, he ain't my President, he might be yours, he ain't my President….”

Isn’t it time to ban kitchen knives on college campuses?
“Victim of Virginia Tech slaying was decapitated”
"BLACKSBURG, Va. – A graduate student from China was decapitated with a kitchen knife in a campus cafe at Virginia Tech by another graduate student who knew her, police said Thursday..."
11 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoCoke's "Carbon Footprint"?
Since we are now contemplating instituting a flatulence tax against cattle, dairy cows and pigs, shouldn't we be banning Coke and all carbonated beverages, including beer, outright? Soda contains added CO2 that escapes into the atmosphere. Beer contains naturally occurring CO2 that results from fermentation and is released into the atmosphere. Come to think of it, all alcoholic beverages should be banned since CO2 is produced during the fermentation process. Soda, beer and alcoholic beverages do not contribute to nutrition, they are strictly a luxury items - so let's all get on board and have these products banned, they are destroying the Earth!
6 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoWhich group will Obama disappoint first?
It's clear that he is not going to be able to make everybody happy (he buy us all off with puppies and some people prefer cats). So is he going to disappoint the hard-core Left or the Moderates, both who were important his success. Who else might he disappoint?

President Elect Obama's first appointment - former Fannie Mae Director Rahm Emmanuel. Wow, this makes me very hopeful.
13 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoBiden mentioned Katie's restaurant in Wilmington?
I'm from Delaware and I want to go to Katie's in Biden's home town. Should I go to the street he thinks it's on, or should I go to the "Wings to Go" where it use to be, or should I go back in time if I want to eat there? Strange he doesn't even know his home town (and even stranger that he won't debate his U.S. Senate opponent, a woman).
7 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoGlobal Warming - Excess Carbon Production?
I have a great idea to lower carbon (CO2) emmissions. Do away with all beer production, even better, all ethanol production, here is the formula for ethanol fermantation:
C6H12O6 → 2 C2H5OH + 2 CO2
Given this fact, production of recreational alcohol would seem to be a total inexcusable conversion of a sugar molecule (C6 H12 O6) into 2 CO2 molecules.
Why haven't all the Liberals been calling for this?

4 AnswersElections1 decade agoWhat does this quote say about what Michelle Obama thinks about the U.S.?
"For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country"
She and her husband are in the top 1% of the wage earners in this country and both went to Ivy League Law Schools. I guess prior to this she was ashamed of the U.S. Wow!

6 AnswersElections1 decade agoObama supporters pressed officials to keep Colbert off ballot?
http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/11/06/obama.colbe...
Several reputable sources said the reason was that Colbert would take away votes from Obama because Colbert's supporters are the same basic group as Obama's supporters. So what does this say about Obama, his supporters and the likelihood that he will even come close to being nominated?
5 AnswersElections1 decade agoHillary Care – Dental Benefit?
I haven’t heard the details about the dental aspect of Hillary’s socialized health plan, but is this what we have to look forward to with respect to the dental benefits?
“Falling numbers of state dentists in England has led to some people taking extreme measures, including extracting their own teeth, according to a new study released Monday.
Others have used superglue to stick crowns back on, rather than stumping up for private treatment, said the study. One person spoke of carrying out 14 separate extractions on himself with pliers…”

5 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoWhy doesn't this article list the guy's political party?
Atlantic City mayor quits after disappearance
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20071010/pl_nm/atlantic...
"PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Atlantic City Mayor Robert Levy resigned on Wednesday, 12 days after he disappeared on an unexplained medical leave and created a leadership crisis in New Jersey's gambling city.
Levy's resignation, announced by his lawyer, was precipitated by an investigation by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs which is looking into whether he actually received two awards that appear on his military record. Levy served in Vietnam during the 1960s and early 1970s..."
Apparently the guy did have a very admirable service record, but for some reason he felt he had to pad it for political purposes and to get extra VA benefit payments. It's actually sort of sad. But why no mention of his political party in the article?
