  • Is it a good idea to let a child go to private school from Pre-K on up to, perhaps 5th grade, then start homeschooling?

My brother and his wife have decided to put their son through homeschooling. I think this is a great idea for them. They are both able to stay home with him.

I suggested sending their child to private school from Pre-K up to maybe 4th or 5th grade. My concern is that he should not miss out on the classroom environment.

There he can learn the necessary social skills of being around other kids and learn how to follow instruction by the teacher. Then by the time he is in a higher grade class, he could start homeschooling. they think it might be a good idea.

I don't know anything about homeschooling, do other people take this route? What is your opinion?

  • Inspired by Charles' question about birds: Did you ever rescue an injured or abandoned wild animal or bird?

Last year, my cat raided a rabbit's nest in an empty field. She came home with one of the recently born baby rabbits. I found her in the yard tossing is up in the air like a toy. I thought she had caught a mouse, but after I took it from her, I realized it was this baby rabbit. Still alive, I made a warm bed for it, then got busy trying to figure out how to care for it.

Later that afternoon, my crazy cat came home with another one. Now, I had two of them. I was told that they could not survive without their mother. I got online and found a man that referred me to a lady in my area that took in injured birds and wild animals. She was certified by the State Wildlife Dept. and had this big sanctuary at her house. She told me it was possible they could survive and she would try her best. I gave her a donation and never went back to see if they made it. I didn't want bad news.

My cat got bad news when I got home, she was grounded to stay inside the house for 2 weeks.

  • Senior Citizens, what is the longest time you ever owned a TV set.?

My philosophy is that if it still works, don't get rid of it. I have 2 televisions from the mid 90's. Still working fine. They are actually gathering more dust than electricity, since I don't care for the new programs that are out. Occasionally, I will try to hunt down an old movie. Got rid of cable years ago, don't miss it.

My kids will replace their TV about every 2 years, each time getting bigger and fancier.

I remember when I was their age, we didn't replace them as often. Back then, the giant wooden console around the TV was part of the living room decor. Who can forget the remote with only 2 buttons on it?

Still, I laugh when I think of what my kids would do, if they had to run down the store to get their TV tubes tested every so often.

  • Ladies (or gents) what was your worst "hairdresser" experience?

I have always preferred to do my own hair and stay away from hairdressers. Back in the 80's, I decided to let this guy at a salon give me a body wave. It was all the fad to have the giant hair back then.

He ended up giving me a permanent and putting me under a dryer for 30 minutes. I assumed he knew what he was doing. My hair was burned so badly and he thought it was funny. He charged me $50 and reluctantly, I gave him a check, which I later cancelled when I got home. I found out later from a beautician friend that he had a drinking problem and was notorious for screwing up people's hair.

  • Do you remember having to go to the store to check your tubes for your TV set?

Remember when a TV repairman would charge $30 to $50 to check out your bad TV tubes. Then, we were able to go to 7-11 stores or Sears and check our own tubes? Was that when life used to be simple?

  • Did you ever go walking through the cemetery on Halloween night?

We did, when I was a kid. After roaming all the neighborhoods for candy, we would go to the local cemetery. This cemetery is from the 1800's, a very old place. Daring each other to walk through it.

When I took my kids out trick or treating, I used to take them walking through the cemetery and tell them some ridiculous scary story as we were walking. One time, I will never forget, I took my daughters and their friends walking in the cemetery. The kids were listening to the story I was telling them. When we got to the center of the place, we came upon this old bum who was sleeping behind one of the grave stones. We woke him up and startled him. When we saw him we screamed and when he saw us he screamed.

We all turned and ran so fast in all directions, to get out of there, screaming all the way. My kids still laugh about that night. HAPPY HALLOWEEN MEMORIES to you GUYS.

  • What do you think of this story?

This was on our local news last night. I am so shocked at all this. The pain this family must feel is unbelievable. What is your opinion on this?

The newsreporter said that the letter was delivered by UPS and no one was home when they delivered. So, UPS left the letter on the door.

  • As of today, what are the temperatures in your neck of the woods?

I love the Fall, not so much the winter. Last night, our first cold front reached us. Temps got down to 66 degrees and will be the same tonight. It was so cold, BRRRR... we had to wear coats.

I know some of you might think I am crazy, especially if you are in cold country, but just know that you have all my admiration and respect. I don't know how you do it. If I lived anywhere colder, I would become a frozen popsicle and die

  • Inspired by Gem's question: What color were your appliances during the 60's and 70's?

Remember those great colors? (yuck) The beautiful Harvest Gold, Avocado Green or Chocolate Brown?

Also, does anyone still have the same old tiles in their bathroom? My guest bathroom still has the pink tiles that were installed in the early 60's. Our local tax appraisal office gives people lower property tax appraisal value for the pink tiles because they are considered "antiquated". LOL

  • What was your worst (or funniest) wardrobe malfunction that ever happened to you?

Please share your story. (men, too!)

My husband and I were out having dinner with some business clients. We were in a fancy restaurant and I wore my best dress. After we started dinner, I noticed that every time I lowered my chin to eat a bite of food, something kept poking me in the chin. I looked down and found the wire in my bra had worked its way out of my bra and was sticking out of my dress. I'm talking a good 2 or 3 inches sticking out. I was horrified and just covered my chest with a napkin and excused myself from the table. Of course, everyone noticed it.

Another time, I was standing in line at the store and looked down and realized I had my pants on inside-out. As usual, I pretended not to notice.

Another time, I got dressed for work in a hurry and when I got to work, I looked down at my shoes and realized I left the house with 2 different color shoes, one was black and one was brown.

  • Have you seen the Littoral Combat Ships (LCS)?

The commission ceremony for the USS Fort Worth (LCS-3) is taking place in my home town this week-end. I'll be there for one of the tours going on this week. I'm so excited and so proud of our Navy.

  • Did you hug your pet today?

I lost my baby girl cat yesterday. She was 18 years-old and had cancer. We were making preparations at the vet to put her down. The doctor gave her pain medication to make her as comfortable as possible and we had made plans to put her down the next day. Sometime during the night, she passed away. I believe God answered my prayers to take her suffering away. I do miss her sweet little face.

  • Did you ever get a Sky King "Detecto Microscope"?

It was only a 25 cents and a label from Peter Pan peanut butter jar. I recently came across some Sky King DVDs . It was fun watching the episodes. I loved the plane he flew, a Cessna 310, so graceful and fast. My father was a pilot and had one back in the 60's.

  • Does anyone have one of those horrible neighbors living in your neighborhood?

Ya know, those troublemakers that continuously call the police or dog catcher.

We had a woman in ours that was "sue happy". She lived here about 6 years and during that time she had sued 5 neighbors with frivolous lawsuits. She would actually go to your property and somehow get hurt or injured and sue.

She caused a lot of problems and one of our neighbors, that she targeted, actually had a stroke over it. She would even sit in her window with binoculars and spy on people in their homes and call the police.

She finally moved out and we found out later that her old neighborhood had a block party after she left. She got hers eventually, her husband caught her with the pool guy and threw her out.

Did you catch the article? One fungus eats polyurethane and another mushroom was found that can be used to create a substance to replace Styrofoam. Sounds good to me.
