Born 1940; retired for 5 years; have one husband and three 5-year-old Maine Coon cats, all spayed females; live in a small two-story brick house in Richmond, Va. We have three children, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. I love my family and my cats; I love music, I love to read, I love bowling duckpins, I enjoy cooking and eating. I also enjoy road trips.

  • Can you dance a jig?

I can, if I've had a few well-doctored eggnogs, otherwise I have the rhythm of a piece of granite.

  • Do the holidays make you feel as if things are spinning out of control?

I feel like Alice, when the cards all fell on her. And then I realize the end of the year is rushing at me also.

  • Am I about to be had?

Had a blowout on the interstate. Fortunately, I have a full-size spare.

Went to the dealer today to see about getting the one that blew replaced, and he said because of tread wear and the fact that I have all-wheel drive, we might have to replace ALL of them.

I paid $2,000 to replace all the tires and get that full-size spare a year and a half ago.

  • Have you met a good Samaritan on the highway?

Back to that flat again. When I pulled off the interstate onto the exit ramp and pulled over to the outside edge of the shoulder and walked to a phone, I was passed by probably 30 cars during my trek. Not one stopped to ask a granny type walking along the shoulder with her car a half-mile behind, emergency flashers blinking, if she needed help or a ride or to offer a cell phone call for her. I think that surprised me more than anything, even the flat tire!

  • Did you know that sometimes your kids know best?

Daughter's been nagging me to carry a cell phone for emergencies. I thought about the Jitterbug, but it's too limiting. When I was traveling back and forth to Pennsylvania, she nagged me again about a cell phone. Today, we were on our way to North Carolina to visit stepdaughter, when we had a flat. Hubby's still not well enough to hike (or drive), so he stayed in the car while I walked a half mile or more from the exit ramp to Denny's to call AAA. Stepdaughter gave us one of her phones that was on the family plan and had a number in our area assigned before we left her house. My own daughter will be so proud!

  • What's your take on this?

My daughter has an account with Wachovia Bank. She called the bank's customer service the other day and her account was assessed $2 for the call.

They charge $2 to provide customer SERVICE ??

  • Isn't remembrance a two-way street?

I was feeling sorry for myself that we haven't heard from any of the kids or grandkids today. Then I realized, they haven't heard from us, either. I sent them a group greeting.

  • What was the worst movie you ever saw?

For me, it was "Being There," with Peter Sellers. I know a lot of people thought it was a riot, but I hated it, thought it was exploiting the less-than-bright, sheltered people, idiot savants. In fact, that's the movie that "soured" us on going to the cinema.

  • Was it just a figment of someone's imagination?

I heard the country cousins came to visit, but I see nary a one. In the words of my redneck grandkids, wazzup?

  • What are your thoughts on aging?

We could certainly slow the aging process down if it had to work its way through Congress.

    -- Will Rogers

Don't worry about avoiding temptation. As you grow older, it will avoid you.

    -- Winston Churchill

Maybe it's true that life begins at fifty. But everything else starts to wear out, fall out, or spread out.

By the time a man is wise enough to watch his step, he's too old to go anywhere.

  • Whose movies would you avoid watching?

I don't like crude comedians, and Richard Pryor topped that list, but I did watch the movies he did with Gene Wilder.

On the other hand, Robin Williams is second on that list, and I have steadfastly refused to watch any movie that he was in.

  • Have you a tale of a malicious machine?

I have several. The washer turns about 50 percent of the clothes wrong side out (and it seems the dryer does it to the other 50 percent!).

My favorite machine is the electric drill/screwdriver, but I keep forgetting to flip the switch when I change functions.

And then there's always the PC. 'Nuff said.

  • What are your laundry woes?

Not finding the chewing gum until it's all over the dryer?

Finding bits of tissue throughout the clothes in the washing machine and clogging the dryer screen?

Realizing that the coins you find don't compensate you for the frustration?

Finding that those new jeans have dyed the dryer drum blue?

  • Do you have days when you just don't have any curiosity?

I check in here daily, and would love to join in more, but have been in a funk of sorts lately. The other place helps, because it isn't so limiting. Senior_YA_rejects_and_outlaws@yahoogroups.com

  • Anything embarrassing in your family tree?

An uncle a few generations ago was tarred and feathered for "giving succor to the enemy." He and his family had provided shelter and food for the widow of a Union soldier.

Actually, the embarrassment wasn't ours, but that of the ones who did the tarring and feathering.

  • As a senior, do you feel bullied?

I went to replace our VCR yesterday only to find out they've quit making the ones that hook up with coaxial cable and can be used with analog TVs and can be programmed.

They're ready for digital. I'm NOT.

  • Were you surprised?

I came on this morning to sort of relax the brain from the confusion at learning a new site. I find many of the same faces back here. Is the other just for fun and this just for serious? I'm actually quite a novice at these things.

  • Have you ever had an MRI?

I had one last year of my forearm, after a muscle lost its mooring. They put all of me in the tube to scan my ARM.

I'd been warned about the noise, but something Dragon said in another answer reminded me of this.

I found the noise very rhythmic, and almost fell asleep during the process, because I was hearing in my head music to go with the percussion section.

    (The muscle couldn't be saved.)

  • Are you hoping for a quick end to the Santa Ana winds and the fires they've spawned?

The clips I've seen on TV and the pictures on AOL news are just devastating. My heart goes out to those people who've lost all their possessions. Thank goodness they escaped with their lives.

  • Have we got it out of our systems yet?

The troll appears to have been vanquished. I hope our friends reappear. It appears some have staunch allies, which is a good thing. Can we now move on?
