Owner of a beautiful paint mare named Symbol <3. Got her as a neglected, abused four month old filly who now stands at three years old and healthy. I helped break her, and she is by far the most calm young horse I've ridden. I couldn't have asked for a better horse, and without her my life would be so much different :)
Having trouble lunging?
I've been working with my new horse for some equestrian courses I'm taking for college. When I lunge her, she does great until I ask her to switch directions. When I ask her to switch, she just comes in and stops right beside me. She is completely desensitized to the whip so using that to get her to go is near impossible. (All I have to do is point and she goes which direction I want her to go.) So, my question is, how would I get her to turn directions without her coming towards me and stopping?
~~~~I asked this question the other day and nobody answered my question, everyone got completely off subject.
I was directed to David Lee Archer. Unfortionately I hate his methods and don't agree with half of the things he does.
Does anyone else have any other suggestions for me?
7 AnswersHorses6 years agoHorse isn't giving me my personal space?
Recently I've been working my new horse for some college courses I am taking. My current assignment is to take a video of the horse walking and trotting on a lunge line. My horse does great at first, doing a slow walk around me with little slack on the lunge line. When I begin trotting her she does great at first, moving in a nice circle around me. But, when I ask her to change directions she just walks up to me and invades my personal space. And just stops. She's been trained to be desensitized to the lunge whip, so using that to get her to start going is near impossible. (All I have to do is point which direction I want her to go and she goes) So, my question is How would I teach her to stop and turn directions without her coming towards me?
I use a rope halter with pressure points on it
4 AnswersHorses6 years agoHorse doesn't like feed?
I went to a horse auction this Saturday and bought a mare. After asking my routine questions I asked what kind of feed she's fed. The owner looked at me with a look and said "she's coming off of 175 acres she doesn't get feed." Well, she is slightly malnourished and after already buying feed before the sale I tried to give her some after getting her settled down at my house. She sniffed it but didn't eat it. worried something was wrong I gave her hay which she ate right away. She also likes mints and horse treats, but I need to get some weight on her. So, I bought more nutritious expensive feed and once again all she did was sniff it and then go eat her hay. Can anyone give me some advice on how to get some weight on my new mare? I know there's nothing wrong with her, she's healthy, eating grass and hay, rolling around, running, doing things a healthy horse does.. She's just skinny. Advice???
6 AnswersHorses6 years agocouple questions about moving my horse?
I've recently moved with a friend and my dads told me Ive got to move my horse because he isnt feeding her for me. Which is fine, I've already got a fence up for her put up at my friends house. However one problem is transporting her. My friend lives three miles from my dad, one question I have is if my horse would be able to make the journey if I rode her without water. I'll be ridibg her in the early morning for the coolest weather and to give her plenty of time to get used to her new area. you think i need to take a rest and give her water or would that risk collic? If not I'll bring water.
She's a five year old mustang, well muscled but not ridden weekly. She's not scared of traffic or pedestrians, im more worried f sge can be ridden three miles without water
Another question is shelter. They have an 8 by 9 foot shed that she can freely go in and out of, but they think it's too small for her. I could buy another shelter but i personally think it's plenty of room
9 AnswersHorses8 years agoWhat is this lump on my horse?
Sorry about the picture quality. It's under her jaw, about the size of a half dollar. It's hard and a little scabby. Doesn't seem to bother her, no fever or nasal discharge, eating properly and full of energy.
The vet has been informed and an appointment made. However it'll be a week, I'm wondering what y'all think it is and what I need to do to treat it till the vet comes.
3 AnswersHorses8 years agoWhat would you do if your horse started doing this?
I've had my mustang since she was four months old, and now she's five years old. She's never tried to kick at me, however when I went to feed her this morning, I was doing my routine brush-down and she tried to cow kick me. As soon as I saw what she was doing, I cow-kicked her myself which caused her to run out of the stall. I stood between her and her food, and every time she would try and get past me, I'd shake my head and stomp my foot at her. (I use body language with my horse, so if you have anything against it keep it to yourself please.) Anyways, I waited until she gave up and came to me instead of trying to get past me, and once she sniffed my hand I went and stood by the food and let her eat. Once she started eating, I started to brush her again, and had no trouble out of her. I brushed the same spot I was brushing when she tried to kick me, and she moved her hindquarters away from me. Maybe she's sore? She has no horse buddies so there's no way she could've got kicked. Any ideas? Also, how would you handle the situation if your horse tried to kick you out of the blue?
*Note: I've always brushed her while she's eating -every day-, so it can't be food aggression.
8 AnswersHorses8 years agoEnglish or Western style?
I'd like some opinions on my horse, just if you think she carries herself like an English horse or Western horse. To me, she seems like she's got a pep in her step, but it may be because she's so young.
5 AnswersHorses8 years agoTell me what you think! Honest answers, please!!?
Okay, I'm starting Equestrian college next month with my rescue mustang Symbol. One of the courses is called "Correct conformation of a Performance horse" where I'll be required to make a video of my horse describing what features make the correct build, and conformation of the horse. I'm scared I'll have to get a different horse, because my mustang doesn't have the correct 'build' for a performance horse, so I'd love for some feedback on how yall think my horse looks, and if you think I need to get a different horse?
P.S. She's five in the first two video's, in the last video -with me riding her- she's four years and still pretty green.
2 AnswersHorses8 years agoWhat's the worst memory you have with your horse?
I figured I'd do something a little different, and ask what's the worst memory you can remember with your horse, whether it be a bad fall, accident, or just a silly mistake.
I'll go ahead and explain the one memory I know I'll never be able to forget;
You know that awesome feeling when you can finally gallop on a horse without holding onto the saddle or mane? Yeah, I had that great feeling one day when I taught myself how to ride using only my legs. (I didn't have an instructer like most, I learned to ride by practice). SO, here's where the story comes... Dun dun dun... So there I was, riding ontop my Appaloosa soaring, flying, pew pew pew going so fast!! I swear she was going over twenty miles an hour, we were on a clear, open, beautiful field that was flat and safe- so I thought. About halfway to my destination, I could feel the power she was putting into running. Little did i know, I'd regret allowing her to go so fast. I could feel what was happening as it happened.... My horse tripped over her front legs, and let me tell you what I sling-shot out of that saddle so fast I hit the ground before my heart beat again. I skipped across the field like a stone on water, and rolled back onto my legs. And the charlie horse I got??? Un.believeable. I instantly looked at my horse to make sure she didn't fall too, or worse, break a bone, but she was fine just standing there next to my mustang like "wtf you doing way down there?" I had to wait for the charley horse to loosen before I limped over to her. I was done for the day, as a matter of fact I couldn't ride for almost three weeks because a bone popped out of place right above my tailbone. I definitely learned from my experience, and hopefully won't ever have a fall like that again!
14 AnswersHorses8 years agoHow can I teach my horse to....?
I'd like to teach my horse to sidepass. I've looked on youtube, but the video's are not of the horse sidepassing under saddle. My horse already knows how to sidepass on her own, while exercising her, but how to I teach her to do it on cue with me riding her?
5 AnswersHorses8 years agoMy appaloosa wont back up?
Okay so I've been having trouble with teaching my 10 year old appaloosa how to back up for quite some time now. She backs up beautifully under saddle, but when I'm lunging her or if she's in my space, she won't budge. It's obvious her previous owner didn't know how to train her properly. Okay, now let me explain.
I watch Clinton Anderson's method and I've tried every one. But every time I wiggle the rope, tap it with the stick, or put pressure on her nose, she starts to trot in a circle. Every time. Once she starts going in the circle I can get her to stop, but when I try to ask her to back up again she just does it all over again.
So, any ideas?
5 AnswersHorses9 years agoSims 3 Pets question?
Can you actually control the sim/pet (like move the analog stick to make them move) or do you have to click on what you want them to do? (like click the fridge for them to eat, etc)
1 AnswerVideo & Online Games10 years agoRecently broken horse question?
My horse was broken in March, but during the summer I didn't ride her, but now that it's getting cooler I'm starting to ride more often. She doesn't mind having the saddle put on her, but she acts like she doesn't want to ride. How do you get a horse to learn that being ridden shouldn't be work, but fun?
6 AnswersHorses10 years agoGelding vs. Mare (twenty characters)?
I know mare's are usually more dominant, but are they more tolerant of a gelding or another mare?
10 AnswersHorses10 years agoSickle hocks............?
If you ride a horse with sickle hocks, does it make them worse or stronger? I've heard both.
3 AnswersHorses10 years agoWhere the saddle fits on a horse?
My friends were talking about where they set the saddle when they go riding. One said she sets them on the withers, and the other said she sets it on the back. I've always put mine on my horses withers, and have heard that setting it on the back is bad for the horse. Just wondering if this rumor was true or not, anybody know?
5 AnswersHorses10 years agoAnnoying problem that still isnt fixed..?
Okay so seriously I have the squeakiest saddle in the history of saddles. I cant even put it on my horse without it making my neighbors dogs bark. And trail rides are even worse, I cant even hear my horses hooves hit the ground. I've tried saddle soap many times, and some other saddle cleaning... stuff. Anyways, does anyone know any tricks to get an old saddle sound new again? Well not really new, but less squeaky?
9 AnswersHorses10 years agoPretty disturbing question, not trolling.?
I was outside working when I looked over and saw my bull calf humping my horse. I was wondering if this is bad for the horse at all? Im pretty sure he went in too.
He also put her in heat, should I not ride a horse while she's in heat?
7 AnswersHorses10 years agoRescued horse still has same problem?
I've had my rescued paint mare for almost three years now. Unfortionatly, she still has the same bad eating habits. Im guessing because she was abused and neglected, she was never fed properly. So, when I try to feed her grain, she devours it in minutes. I've watched her and it doesn't even look like she chews her food properly. I dont want this to lead to any healthy issues, does anybody know a way to stop this?
-I've been told a few tips but none seem to work (listed below)
*Keep her on hay
*Feed her from your hand in small portions
*Get a smaller bucket
*When she gets a mouthful, take the bucket away, and wait for her to finish.
All of them haven't worked... Anybody have any tips?
