  • What kind of connotation does wearing tiger print carry?

This is mainly in the context of the "Princess Resurrection" (aka "Monster Princess") anime. At the end of episode 6 the next episode is introduced - namely that Hime will go nutso with a defibrillator and that the hospital they're in is creepy. Hiro asks, "Do you wear tiger print also, Hime?" to which she responds, "What are you talking about?"

I am not sure how "defibrillator/hospital" --> "tiger print". Is it just "random" humor or is there some other meaning?

  • How's the quality of Viz Media's "Hayate no Gotoku"?

We've all pirated something at one point or the other - in my case, manga. But now that the publishers really are unhappy, I've decided to start buying some. The series in question is "Hayate the Combat Butler". Now when I say "quality", I don't mean paper thickness; I mean the stuff you read in the speech bubbles.

There are some very specific jokes in the series that only make sense in Japanese (my favorite being when Hinagiku coldly switches from calling our main character "Hayate-kun" to "Ayasaki-kun"). Now, the scanlation on OneManga did not even attempt to try for an English equivalent (to my knowledge, American English doesn't dictate that you call your enemies by their last names) but simply noted that to call someone by their last name is to distance oneself from him.

Does Viz Media do the same? Most specifically, are the honorifics left untouched? (IE -kun, -chan, -san....I don't mind "ojou-sama" --> "milady", but the rest have no English equivalents.)

Please do NOT point me to random websites, least of all scanlation hosters. I would really appreciate the help of someone who owns the official English translations.

  • Are USB Microphones as universal as they sound on Linux?

I am dealing with the Audio-Technica AT2020 USB Condenser USB Microphone (http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-AT2020-USB-Co... I have been reading reviews for a while and Google doesn't turn up much either. I would like to know if this mic will work with Fedora Linux - NOT Ubuntu. I read somewhere that most USB mics will work anywhere, but I am a bit doubtful. Can anyone help me out here?

  • Is there a canceling effect between a friend request & a friend suggestion on Facebook?

My good friend recently joined Facebook, jumping on the bandwagon with my other gazillion friends. I know I sound stupid, snooty, yadda yadda but I kinda expected a friend request from her. She has already friended 49 of my other friends. One of my other friends sent me a friend suggestion, pointing out her profile (you know, the "You have a friend suggestion" thing. And it has a some fine print: "this friend was suggested by [name]"). This happened on the day she joined.

In short, if one of my friends has sent me a friend suggestion for her, and it is pending (neither confirmed nor denied - "Add as a friend"ed and "Ignore", really), would it cancel out any incoming friend requests from her? As in, maybe she has sent me a friend request, but it does not show up because I already had a pending friend SUGGESTION for her?

I know, I suck at writing and sound really stupid....please e-mail me if you need further clarification.

  • Is the possibility of data loss on Linux very high? ?

I recently made a switch from Windows to Ubuntu, because I was sick and tired of getting funny error messages about some random DLL going missing. And my teachers stopped believing me when I said my computer wouldn't work right.

So, I installed Xubuntu on an older computer and tried out OpenOffice.org Writer. Unfortunately, the version from the repository looks outdated (2.4.1, I think) and the most recent is 3.something. So I downloaded the package from the OpenOffice.org website, but while uninstalling the 2.4 version a funny thought occurred to me, prompted by a sentence in the uninstall process. "You may wish to back up your data before installing or removing applications."

Now, at this point I was positively panicking. I can't even add/remove a few applications without running the risk of saying to my teacher the next day, "Synaptic ate my homework"? Honestly. Quite a few big corporations (Google, for example) use Linux on their servers. And yes, I know there is a definite difference between desktops and servers (terminal only vs. GUI--I happen to be a noob, so I have to use a GUI), but is data loss really that possible on Linux? The Xubuntu Documentation even brings up that you may wish to back up your data regularly. I've never run into anything to do with data backup at all on Windows--and I thought Linux was more stable in many ways!

Please help me out if you can! Can you explain to me if the probability of data loss in Linux is very high, and why? I am not one to mess crazily around with base source code or whatever and end up not being able to boot--I just add/remove applications quite a bit (lots of games, you know). Thanks!
