I am a Zoologist and have a lot of experience with animals. I a have worked at a small zoo, a state of the art dog kennel and now a pet store. I also own several fish tanks and have started breeding cherry shrimp and a few species of fish (mostly cichlids). I have spent many many hours researching all sorts of animals and have owned pets my entire life. This being said I normally answer questions about animals and if a question is asked that I do not already know I will spend the time to look it up. Any other questions I answer are based on my life experiences or common sense.

  • Male Betta with a sorority of Females?

Fist off, if you don't know what you are talking about don't answer this question. I am looking for people with some experience, and not people that are going to say "NEVER!!! Bettas can only be kept by themselves in small tanks b/c they'll kill EVERYTHING!". Bettas may be territorial, but they are not aggressive killer fish. Also thinking that Bettas need small tanks is ridiculous, in the wild a male can have a territory well over 100 gallons.

    Now for my actual question.

I am redoing my 40 gallon breeder tank. It is already setup and cycled, but I am changing the plants and the stocking. I've got all the other fish picked out for the most part including a sorority of 7 female Betta splendens. One thing I am interested in is adding in a Male Betta splendens. Now obviously (like with cichlids) I would have to take into consideration the personality of the male, but does anyone have some input on whether or not this would work?

A little bit about the tank....

As I said it is a 40 gallon breeder (36"x18" footprint).

It will be very heavily planted.

Along with the plants, rocks and malaysian driftwood will provide more hiding spots.

I have seen this several times in the past but not in anything smaller tank a 55 gallon. That 55 however had about 9 female bettas and 2 males in it though.

  • Tips on Keeping a Nicaraguan Boa?

I have been wanting a snake of my own for a LONG time now and came across a nicaraguan boa constrictor (from what I can find on them mostly likely B. constrictor imperator subspecies).

I have a background with animals, including snakes. From handling and taking care of Ball Pythons, Boa Constrictors (B. constrictor constrictor), Rosy Boas, Sand Boas, ect.... at a zoo to currently working at a Pet Store that caries BPs, Corn Snakes, Kingsnakes, ect...That being said this will be my first snake.

The one I am looking at is a male, around 4 feet long. He has the potential to grow another foot or so. From what I have read these guys typically don't get as long as other subspecies though.

I plan on keeping him in a standard 50 gallon tank (36inL x 19inW x 19inH) for now, but will eventually build him one (4ftL x 2ftW x 2ftH) that will have a shelf large enough for him to rest on about a foot off the ground. I plan on using aspen bedding, having a hide on the cool side and 1 on the warm side, and have a water bowl large enough for him to sit in on the cool side. Temperature wise I plan on about 88 degrees on the warm side to 80 degrees on the cool side. During shedding I also plan on adding in a humidity box (hide lined with moss) to help with shedding. There will also be decorations like sturdy branches, fake plants, a good sized rock or 2 and things with different textures (From the zoo I learned that Boas tend to like feeling/exploring different textures).

How does this sound for housing?

A couple of the things I am having trouble finding are…

    1. Should I use a ceramic heat emitter or a basking bulb? What should I use at night?

What wattage should they be for the current tank and for the larger tank?

    2. Is UVB light needed? I keep finding conflicting info. Some sites say absolutely, but give no reason. Other say no because snakes can metabolize calcium without it (unlike lizards). I don’t remember using them at the zoo, but I never actually setup the lighting for an exhibit.

Any other tips on caring for Boa Constrictors, especially Nicaraguans specifically would be appreciated.

  • Whats wrong with my car's speakers?

I own a 2002 Impala. A couple years ago a friend of mine added a speaker box in my trunk. He had worked at one of the best car audio and customization shops in town so I figured he knew what he was doing. Long story short he didn't. He ended up just splicing in the new speakers with the old. About a month later the wires came undone and the rear speakers stopped working. I reconnected everything how it was and it still didn't work so I ended up just putting things back how they were without the new speakers. So now my rear speakers still don't work. A bunch of people I talked to suggested putting in new 6x9" speakers in the rear which I just tried... still not working.

So does anyone have any ideas at all??? I've checked everything I can think of. The only other ideas I have are that there could be a problem with my amp (stock amp) or that there is an inline fuse that I blew.

  • Minimum tank for 6 Angelfish?

So I am upgrading from my 75 gallon tank to one closer to 150 gallons. The dimensions are 62"Lx19"Wx29"H.

Anyways I have a lot of experience with fish and am no novice. I have bred my current Angels along with a few other species so I don't need any info on cycling or anything like that.

What I am wondering is if anyone knows if 6 Angelfish (3 pairs) will do alright in a 150 gallon community tank. I have seen it before and I know another local breeder that keeps atleast 5 pairs in his 150 gallon show tank. I have also seen tanks as small as 55 gallons with 6 angels in them though they hadn't paired up yet.

The reason I was asking is that while I was talking to some other cichlid breeders a few of them said they don't think that it can be done in a community tank. Even one this size.

  • How to get a modded Xbox 360 banned?

So I need to get a modded xbox 360 banned. Its technically mine but my fiance's brother has taken it over and got it modded without my permission. He agreed if it got banned he would buy me a new one. I'm tired of him sitting there all f-ing day smoking pot and playing my xbox while I work. I have stopped fighting about it with him for the simple sake of peace in the house. I just want my this modded one banned. I don't care if you think this is right or not. Just let me know what to do please before I decide to kick him out and let him live on the streets.

  • Stocking new tanks... any advice?

    I currently have a 15, a 10 and a 3 gallon tank.

I am getting two more 10 gallon tanks and a 30 gallon tank.

    Fish-wise I have:

9 adult guppies and about a dozen fry

    4 cory cats

2 fancy goldfish (fantails about 3 in.) in their own tank (of course).

This is what I have in mind.

-Put the goldfish in the 30 gallon tank that will have great filtration. The rule I have heard over and over -is 20 gallons for the first fancy goldfish and 10 for each additional.

-Have a 10 gallon for the female guppies and they fry

-I would use the 3 gallon for something like ghost or cherry shrimp... I know its too small for any fish.

-In the 15 gallon I want to put a pair of Dwarf Gourami in with my male guppies

-For another 10 gallon tank I want to get 1 male and 3 female many banded shell-dweller cichlid

-I don’t know what to do with the last 10 gallon tank. Any ideas?

Also what is the best place for my corys, and could I get more for the other tanks?

    Any other ideas for me?

I know thats a lot of information, but if you get what I mean and have any suggestions I am definitely open. Also I know that the tanks need to go through the nitrogen cycle. I am not planning on getting the tanks and then running out right away to buy the fish lol.

  • Building own fish tanks?

I have been looking into building my own fish tanks. I already have one built by my soon to be father in law that I have fixed a seal on, and have been thinking about building my own. I like the idea of being able to make it to fit where I want it. I am also thinking of making a few reptile tanks as well. I really want acrylic so that it will be lighter... the glass one I fixed is 180 gallons and HEAVY.

Anyone know some pros and cons?

How about supplies I'll need? I know acrylic is bonded with a chemical solvent.

I want to try it on a small 30ish gallon tank for my goldfish before making one around 150 gallons for Oscars.

Is there anywhere I could get acrylic tanks for cheaper than I could make them.

I've checked craigslist and most are glass tanks and aren't near the size or the right dimensions I want.

  • What reptiles can I keep in here?

I have tank that was built by my father in law. It measures 4ft. long x 2ft. deep x 3ft. high and will hold about 190 gallons if I fix the seal.

So what can/ should I keep in here. I am open to all suggestions. Just let me know what all I will need for any reptiles you suggest.

I am also building a 6ft L x 2ft W x 2ft H that would hold about 155 gallons if I filled it up. Any suggestions for this one either.

  • What to put in my new tank?

I am fixing a homemade fish tank and then its mine. The tank is about 190 gallons and measures about 4ft. long x 2ft. wide x 3ft. tall.

    So here are my questions...

Any suggestions what to put in it. I want freshwater fish. You can suggest lots of little fish or a few larger fish I may go either way.

What kind of filtration should I go with?

What kind of substrate, decorations and live plants would you recommend?

Also I have to build a custom hood and was wondering about what kind of lighting I should go with?

    Thank You!

One more thing... I am in the process of building a 155 gal tank that will measure 6ft. long x 2ft. wide x 2ft. high. So even if you dont get best answer I may end up taking your advice for the smaller tank.

  • Should I sell my guppy fry?

My guppies are breeding at a fairly constant rate, but it is not to the point where my tank is over stocked yet. Besides providing places to hide, and baby brine shrimp as food I have not done much to keep all of the fry alive. Instead it has been a survival of the fittest situation which has resulted in 4 beautiful and healthy juvenile red blonde guppies (3 males and 1 female from the first birth), and about 7 more fry that are too young for me to sex yet. I want to sell some of the younger guppies so I don't have to worry about too many fish in the future and won’t have to worry about inbred fish either.

I might be able to find a pet store that will trade for store credit, or was thinking about using like craigslist or maybe even aquabid.com. I know I will only get about $1 per fish.

Is it worth it though? I am not worried about any of the effort I’d have to put in. I’m just not sure if there would be a point in breeding and selling such a common fish.

Would it make any more sense to buy a small tank just for the fry so that more survive when it would take so many fry sold to come up even?

Should I control what male breeds with what female, or let them go about it naturally? I have 1 lyretail male, 1 red blonde adult male, and 1 that I think is a red cobra delta male. The females I have are red blondes (one with a yellow tail… is that normal), blue glass, and tequila sunrise strains.

If I enjoy breeding them should I try another livebearer like swordtails?

Also random but what are some non livebearers that are easier to breed and small?

  • What to do with goldfish?

I am moving my girlfriend's fancy tail goldfish to a bigger tank. However the only tank I can move them into is one I got from her bother that has 2 feeder guppies, 4 swallowtail shiner minnows and a crayfish without any claws. Can the goldfish be kept with these other fish or should I get rid of them or try keeping them with my tank of guppies (the other fish that is... not the goldfish)?

This move is only temporary. I know that goldfish need large tanks and excellent filtration. This is just until I can buy a bigger tank for them with my next couple pay checks.

  • What to do with my fish?

    I currently have...

A 3 gallon tank from my girlfriend that has her 2 fancy tail goldfish in it.

A 10 gallon tank that has fancy guppies in it and a corycat. The guppies are breeding like crazy because I was planning on exchanging them with my local fish store for credit.... until I had to move. Now I don't want any more baby guppies until I can find a store willing to trade in my new area.

    and

A 15 gallon tank that my girlfriend's brother doesn't want. This tank though has 2 feeder guppies, 4 swallowtail shiner minnows, and a crayfish he caught that has no claws.

    So....

What I want to do is either...

    1. Move the goldfish into the ten gallon, get rid of the fish in the 15 and move my fish from the 10 into it so I can get 2 more cories, except for my male guppies(2) that will be put in the small 3 gallon tank.

or 2. Move the males to the 3 gallon, leaving the ten just with the females and the cory, and move the goldfish into the 15.

    My real questions are...

What one would be better temporarily until I can get a bigger tank for the goldfish?

Can the goldfish be with the other fish in the 15 gal. tank, or should I get rid of them?

Besides getting another tank would the fish in the 15 gal. tank work with any of the other tanks so that I don't have to get rid of them?

(note: I will be getting the goldfish a larger tank that is going to be atleast 36 gallons. I know how large they get, but my girlfriend didn't when she bought them. It should only tank me about a month to save up for it, or sooner if I find a one for cheap online.)

  • Dramatic drop in amount of sex?

Me and my fiance have been together for around 9 months now. When we first started having sex (after about a moth getting to know each other better and entire nights of talking until dawn) we would make love almost every day, or every other day. We constantly wanted one another and it was amazing. Especially because I have a naturally high sex drive. However after about a month and a half we had to spend about 3 months in a relationship where we lived about an hour an a half away and had jobs so we only saw each other about once every two weeks or so. Initially we would make love atleast one day during the time span we would see each other. After a bit though it was hit or miss whether would would at all. Finally we were able to see each other every day again and while our relationship itself keeps getting stronger, the amount of sex that we are having is drastically less than it was previously. Sometimes it will be once a week and many times it will be closer to once every 2 to 3 weeks.

This is a problem for me for a few reasons....

First off like I said I have a naturally high sex drive (I have even looked into ways to lower it) and after 3 or 4 days it sometimes will physically hurt without having sex.

Secondly I have a negative body image of myself and her drop in interest has made this much worse.

Thirdly along with the negative body image, the lack of physical contact seems to trigger periods of depression in me where I feel worthless and even more unattractive. (even with my meds the periods without sex are by far worse than ones without the meds and with sex)

I have tried talking to her about it, but I always seem to feel like I am not only begging for sex, but that I am pushing her into something that she doesn't want (I should also mention that she sometimes hurts afterward, and I really hate causing her any pain). It's also not an issue of satisfaction either because not only can I tell that her multiple orgasms are real, but I have overheard her talking to friends about how I am. All the relationships I have been in in the past have been longer than this and yet this is the first time I have had this problem. However, in my past relationships there wasn't the same level of a connection that there is in this one.

I don't know what to do. When we first started having sex and before I was in the picture she had a very high sex drive... so it really makes me think that the problem must be me.... what should I do?

Ok so I have been in a bad mood (to put it lightly) for about a week because of a shitload of reasons. I am at the point where I am about to lash out at something/someone and need some good music, not necessarily to calm me down, but to let me vent.

Please no panic at the disco or taking back sunday type stuff.... I am just not into that stuff

I would love some really heavy songs.... even black metal or death metal

I'm also into ICP, Twiztid, Tech N9ne, ect... so anything by artist like this would be great too

I'll really listen to almost anything..

  • Fish for a 30+ Gallon tank?

I will soon be buying a new fish tank. It will most likely be either 30 or 36 gallons unless I can get a larger used one for cheap. I have been trying to decide what fish I want to stock it with and would like to know if anyone has comments or ideas for me. What I think I have decided on is this.

2 German Blue Ram Cichlid (1 male 1 female)

2 Neon Blue Dwarf Gourami (1male 1 female)

    4 or 5 Cory Catfish

    2 Oto catfish

and a group of schooling fish, I am thinking around 6 or so rummy nosed tetras or serape tetras.

I am also open to other smaller fish that would work well with this tank instead of schooling fish, and any ideas in general.

So is this sized tank for these fish alright, or should I try and get more like a 55 gallon or larger tank?

    Other questions I have are,

What kind of substrate should I use on the bottom? I am thinking sand, but I’m not sure.

What are some good live plants for this tank?

What are some good, more natural looking hiding spots that I can get? Would it be cheaper to try and make my own?

Would a good sized piece of driftwood be a good addition to the tank?

    1 German Blue Ram Cichlid

    1 Agassizi's Dwarf Cichlid

    2 Dwarf Gourami

    4 or 5 Cory Catfish

    2 Oto catfish

and a group of schooling fish, I am thinking rummy nosed tetras (how many would make a good school?), but am open to ideas. I am just not a big fan of other tetras really, especially neons.

I am also open to other smaller fish that would work well with this tank instead of schooling fish, and any ideas in general.

    Other questions I have are,

What would be a good size filter for this tank to keep the water really clean?

What kind of substrate should I use on the bottom? (small rocks, big rocks, sand, ect...)

How well planted should it be?

Any ideas on various sized hiding places so that all the fish would have a place to go? Preferable not just go buy the standard rocks and caves at the pet store for $10-15+.

    Thank you in advance!

  • How should I stock my tanks?

I have 2 ten gallon tanks right now and plan on buying atleast a 30 gal. tank soon.

The first 10 gallon tank has guppies, a black neon tetra, and a cory cat.

The second 10 gallon currently has a claw-less-crayfish in it and a few feeder fish.

The new tank will be atleast 30 gal. and once it is established will be a blank slate to work with.

Some ideas I have for the new tank are, a blue ram cichlid, atleast 6 tiger barbs, cory cats, oto cats, cherry barbs... any other ideas? I really need a list of compatible fish, and not just what will look cool. I'm also wondering about some good live plants and recommended decor for a more natural looking tank.

The first ten gallon tank has 9 guppies, 5 of them are fry, once I remove the females to another tank

I will have 4 males in the tank. Should I add an oto cat to control any algae growth, or another cory cat to keep the other one company?

The second ten gal tank may be turned into a terrarium, but if it is not, do you have any ideas for a small tank community?

I know it is a lot of questions, but I would appreciate some ideas. The best one gets 10 points.

  • Fiance want to dress slutty for Halloween?

My fiance wants to dress slutty for Halloween.I told her I wasn't comfortable with it. My past ex-girlfriends all wanted to dress slutty and a couple of them cheated on me on Halloween (and admitted it) while the others ditched me at the parties to talk to "other people". I didn't tell her that she couldn't (I'd never tell her should couldn't do something), but I don't want to go to the party if she does dress slutty (I even told her she could take my car if she wanted to go and I'd pick up extra hours at work). I can tell that she is upset about this though.

So why is Halloween all about women dressing slutty? To me it shows little self respect and i don't see why a kids holiday is an excuse to dress like a whore and flaunt your body to other guys. She had some awesome costume ideas before she wanted to dress slutty so it's not like there is nothing else she can wear. She even came up with a couple idea for us because that's technically how we're supposed to dress for the party (and I don't think i'd make a good slut).

So what should I do? She hasn't allowed me to explain why I'm not comfortable with her dressing slutty, and I would like to go to the party with her, but I don't want to be seen with a woman that is showing little self-respect for herself. One of the reasons I fell in love with her is because she had self-respect and wasn't slutty.

  • Confused. Involves and Ex and a friend. Help?

Ok so here it is. Me and my gf of over 2 and a half years broke up about a month ago. We were fighting a lot and i think it mainly had to do with me going off to college and not being home as much. I talked to her for 4 hours last weekend when I went to get my stuff and she confessed that she was still in love with me. However she is dating another guy. I didn't tell her this because I didn't want to come between her and him, but I realized that I was still in love with her too. I would feel guilty telling her I love her because she is happy with him and that's all I really want for her. I feel that if I told her I loved her I would be being selfish. We did make a pact though that in a couple years when I graduate if we were single we would see if things would work again. I don't know if I can wait that long though, and she is truly the person I see myself with even with all the crap between us. When your with someone you just know.

Meanwhile though. I've been getting texts from a friend of mine. Before me and my ex-gf dated she had feelings for me and I kinda did for her, but not very strong ones. She has been sending me text about how she misses me and even one with a pic and a love song. She is supposed to be on meds for depression and bi-polar but she isnt taking them now. I don't know if she is sending me these texts because she isn't think right or if she actually still has feelings for me. I also don't know if I could be with her because I don't really know if I have feelings for her. I don't know if I could be with anyone right now because i know I couldn't give them my whole heart. And I'm not the kind of guy that can do short term relationships without meaning in them.

Ok so if you were in my shoes what would you do. I am really confused and don't know what to do. I'm at the point where I just want to get away from it all and just drink myself stupid... ok so that is kinda a joke, but seriously I am so ******* confused it's not funny.
