  • My dog won't drink water?

My dog has struvite urine crystals and a bladder infection. She is on meds now for the bladder infection and I’m giving her all kinds of home remedies for the crystals, but my problem is she is not drinking water on her own. I literally have to mix the water with different things to make her drink it… This is very unusual for her. I had a blood test done for her and the vet said all of her organs are fine, so no issues there.

Also, she doesn’t urinate very often but when she does, it’s A LOT so she appears to be holding it for whatever reason.

I’ve brought this up to the vet and he doesn’t seem concerned with it since she is going and I can get her to drink, but I know water is critical for the infection and the crystals.

She eats fine, plays, and is acting fine. She just won’t drink water on her own!

Any ideas as to why she is not drinking water? Could it simply be due to the anitbiotics that she is on, or her infection?

Any ideas to get her to drink water besides what I am doing.

    What I’ve tried:

-Put kibble or treats in water for flavor (this works a little bit)

-Put several water bowls around the house, in different containers (works a little)

-Mix the water with yogurt (this works well, but I am only able to do this twice a day)

-Mix water in w/her food at meal time (again, works well but only able to do this twice a day.)

-Take her on heavy walks, and she will drink a little when we return (can only do this once a day on weekdays)

    Thank you!

  • Period is 20 days late, negative home tests?

Has anyone ever gotten negative home pregnancy tests? I got them on clearance from a liquor store/handy mart.

I usually start my period like clock work, and I've been this way for more than 15 years.

I had unprotected sex a few times and used the pull out method..

I don't have any symptoms besides mild cramping here and there, and difficulty sleeping. I'm 34.

If I'm not pregnant, any ideas on if something could be wrong?

I'm not having extra stress, change in diet, etc..

  • Bowel Obstruction Timeline in Dogs?

I have a 30 pound puggle. She is 4 years old & looooves eating dirty panties (I know, GROSS!) She eats them whole. We are VERY careful about keeping them where she can’t get to them, but she’s a sneak and still somehow does sometimes. I am afraid she may have gotten to some recently and may have a bowel obstruction. We have been to the vet, but I still am worried sick so I wanted to see if anyone has had experience with this and can give me an idea of the timeline. I believe IF she got to some, it would have been Tuesday or earlier (it is now Saturday night.) Would she be very sick by now? She started having diarrhea on Wednesday. Went to vet Friday and he wasn’t concerned about an obstruction since she wasn’t puking, has no pain, she is eating fine, etc… He gave her some meds (antibiotics and anti-diarrhea stuff.) Well, now she won’t poop! I called the vet this morning, and she said that was fine and to go ahead and stop the anti-diarrhea medicine. So I did… but she still hasn’t gone. I am really looking for a timeline of symptoms on bowel obstructions. And any other advice if you have experience with this. THANK YOU!

BTW - I AM GOING TO THE VET AGAIN ON MONDAY IF SHE HAS STILL NOT GONE OR IS NOT BETTER. IF YOU ARE GOING TO REPLY TO TELL ME TO TAKE HER TO THE VET, NO NEED TO WASTE YOUR TIME. THANKS!

  • My dog has bloody runny stools?

For the past two days my dog has had somewhat runny stools. She is straining when she goes. Tonight there was a bit of blood when she went.

My concern is maybe she ate panties, which she has done in the past, but she's always passed them. We are VERY careful about not letting her get to them but somehow she still does sometimes.

She is acting fine other than that; playing, happy, eating fine.

Is it possible she injected panties and is trying to pass them?

    Any other ideas?

The blood was bright red, kinda mucusy. There wasn't much. I did save a sample to bring to the vet (yes that was a blast scooping that up at midnight in the cold wind!!)

I am taking her to the vet tomorrow but I'm up late and can't sleep right now so I wanted to do some of my own digging.

    Thanks!

  • My dog hurt her hind legs or lower back.. how?

anyone know how this could have happened? I am baffled by it. there is nothing she could have jumped down from, or nothing that could have fallen on her. Sometimes we have workers in our backyard, the only thing I can think of is she went after them (she's protective) and she got kicked. Any other theories? She is hurt from impact, she has no scratches or wounds on her.

  • My dog is acting weird?

I just got home from work and my dog is acting strange. She usually greets me (very excited), but she didn't even come to the door when I got home. I found her hanging out in the living room. When I called her, she came over walking strange with her tale in between her legs. My teenage daughter said she heard the dogs (I have two) going crazy barking outside about 30 min prior. We have cats that come into our yard, racoons, and possums. I have checked all over her and there are no wounds, but she will not hop up onto the couch and I can't get her to turn over to check out her belly. I have been home for about 45 min now and she is still walking around with her tale between her legs, and she is being very clingy.

Our vet is obviously closed... If she is not better tomorrow morning I will be taking her in immediatly. any ideas?

  • My dogs ate chocolate - please help!?

My two dogs; one weighs 32 pounds, another weighs about 42 pounds, got into some chocolate, the packaged hot cocoa, which I know can be the worst. My husband called me around 3pm to tell me, and it had been at least 7 hours since they consumed it. He was not concerned at all, didn't induce vomiting (I would have immediately). Anyway, it is 9pm now, it has been at least 12 hours since they consumed it – probably more like 13. Not sure how much they got to - if one got to all of it, or both got to a little, etc….. I don't know. Right now they are both TOTALLY fine.. No symptoms at all. How quick do the negative effects start? I read somewhere if they are still okay after 24 hours they will be fine, but I want to know when the symptoms typically star and a timeline. Thanks in advance!

  • Leg Aches - Getting worse?

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always gotten leg aches. My mom always called them “growing pains.” They were always worse when I walked all day.. I remember screaming after walking all day at Disneyland. As a kid, Tylenol or Advil took the pain away completely.

Well, now I am 31, and I still get the pains. I have never thought much of it until recently. They are much worse – even when I don’t walk around much at all.

I can best describe it as achy legs on my shins, knees, and ankles… sometimes one leg, sometimes both… lately the pain goes a little above my knee when the pain is more severe, and I’ve also had the pain non-stop for about a week.

I also sometimes feel a similar ache (although not very bothersome) in my forearms, wrists and elbows.

I recently found out I have a type of degenerative arthritis in my spine. Could this possibly be another type of arthritis and getting worse with age?

I’ve gotten vitamin tests done and I’m no longer vitamin deficient (I was Iron and Vitamin D deficient but my levels are almost normal now)… I take a multivitamin every day, extra potassium, vitamin d, iron, calcium, and magnesium.

Also- nothing I take helps the pain.

I plan to talk to my Dr. about this soon, but I wanted to see if anyone out there has experienced something similar and has ideas on how to help.

  • Epidural Cortisone Injection - Wore off quickly?

    Hello,

I have two bulging discs, one of which has degenerated quite a bit, a type of arthritis and another degenerative problem - all in my lumbar spine. I’ve had constant pain for six months which has gotten much worse over the past month. I got an epidural cortisone injection last week and I think it has worn off already… here is the timeline:

    - Wednesday afternoon: Got the epidural

    - Thursday: Woke up with sharp stabbing pains in my lower back that got worse throughout the day

    - Friday: Stabbing pains started to subside, still in quite a bit of pain all day

    - Saturday and Sunday: Two days of mild pain

    - Monday: felt GREAT, almost pain free

    - Monday night: Had some slight pain after sitting all day

    - Tuesday: Woke up with mild pain, pain worsened throughout the day

    - Wednesday: Woke up with pain that got worse throughout the day, which is exactly how I always felt before I got the injection.

I feel like the injection wore off already, and really only worked for a couple of days. Is that possible? Should I get another one or will that do no good?

I have a follow up appt next Wed, but I’d like to get some others feedback so I can be prepared.

    BTW – I am 31 years old.

    Thank you!

  • Low Back Pain - Worse after cortisone injection?

I have had chronic low back pain that has gotten worse for about 6 months. I finally had an MRI and know what's wrong... I have some bulging and degenerated discs- a couple other things…. Got a cortisone injection today and my back feels worse. When will it feel better? They said it could take 5 days to work, but when will this real bad pain get better? They said it wouldn't hurt.

  • I have two dogs.. one doesn't let the other play?

I have two dogs, one is more dominant than the other. We got the dominant dog (Miley) second, about six months ago and have had the other dog (Lilly) for a couple years… at first we had some troubles, but now everything is almost perfect. They get along really good, and very rarely fight (only over food so we separate them during meal time, but if a piece of food drops on the ground, oh boy!!).

Since they have been getting along so well, we have decided to re-introduce some toys into the picture and Miley is being a butthead about it. Even if she has no interest in the toy, she growls at Lilly and goes up to her like she’s going to kick her butt. Lilly gets scared and won’t play. I have been punishing Miley by putting her outside for a while, but she’s not catching on. She usually learns very easy, but this is just not working…Any suggestions?

  • Sudden High Blood Pressure?

I have gained weight due to back pain issues, and not feeling good. I finally was diagnosed with iron and vitamin D deficiency, and now supplements have given me some energy back. I started dieting & exercising two weeks ago and have lost 6 pounds. I’m still considered 8 pounds overweight.

Before my diet, my blood pressure was always borderline – usually around 135/87. Well, I took my BP on Saturday at the pharmacy and it was 165/90, and my heart rate was 106. I thought maybe it was a fluke, but got my BP done again today (two days later) at the physical therapists office and it was 145/97, and my heart rate was 106.

Before I started dieting, I took another test called, C-reactive protein (CRP) test and tested 8.7, which was considered high risk for a stroke or heart attack. My doc wasn’t concerned since my BP was not high.

I plan on talking to my Dr. about this on my next check up (next week) but wanted to get some of my own research done in the meantime. Do I seem to be at a high risk for heart attack?

    BTW - I am 31 years old.

  • Pelvic Pain and Lower Back Pain - Going on almost 2 months?

    Hello!

I had a UTI/Kidney infection about 7 weeks ago. The best way to explain my problem is; the UTI is gone, but the symptoms are still there and some have changed slightly. I don’t have flank pain anymore, but my lower back pain feels very similar. I also have pain in my lower pelvic area (around my bladder or maybe my uterus), and I’ve recently been experiencing spasms in my lower back and pelvis. Sometimes when I get a spasm, I feel a slight cramp or spasm in my thigh and/or foot.

I am also tired a lot, but it could be because I am in constant pain and I’m not getting any exercise. I've had pelvic exams, blood tests, urine tests, a CT scan of my abdomen and pelvis, a cystoscopy, all are normal. I get urine tests whenever I go into the docs - about once a week or sometimes more, and I always have a "moderate" amount of microscopic blood in my urine. My Uro doesn’t seem to be concerned since my cystoscopy came back okay… I don’t really know him very well though. Is it normal to have a moderate amount of microscopic blood in the urine all the time? should I get a second opinion?

I got an xray the other day and get the results back soon, but no answers so far, I’m not expecting to get an answer that easy.

My OB said "If it continues for two more months, come back and we may need to look inside by surgery." she said sometimes scans don’t show everything. Does anyone know what kind of problems can only be diagnosed by surgery and not seen by scans or blood work?

Any other ideas as to what this can be? Is it possible that my back just needs to be strengthened? I haven’t worked out since my kidney infection.

Thank you in advance for taking the time!

  • Have you had the swine flu - what was your experience?

Just curious what the different experiences have been for people that have gotten the swine flu. I know there are a lot of people saying that it's just like the regular flu, and not that bad, I think it's a pretty bad flu. It seems more contagious and it lasts longer for most people. Anyway, I thought it'd be interesting to see peoples personal experiences including symptoms, how long it lasted, if you were treated, etc..

Here is my experience with it - My daughter had a cough for about five days, no other symptoms. We thought it was just a cold/cough, but then on Thursday she ended up with a fever of 101 for a day, then 103 on Friday, which lasted the whole day. The fever would not budge with Motrin or anything and there was nothing we could do to get it to go down. We did go to the Dr. that day and got tamiflu. Her fever went to 101 - 102 on Saturday, then 100 on Sunday. It went completely away for about a day, then went back up to 101 - 102 on and off for 2 more days. She was so tired, sleeping a lot, nausea, vomiting, and #3. She was out of school for a week. Tons of kids at her school have gotten it and have been out for 1-2 weeks.

I started coughing about 6 days ago, and haven't gotten a fever or anything, so I think I lucked out. I was sleeping w/her while she was sick so I could monitor her so I'm surprised (AND GLAD) I didn't get it.

    what about you?

My OB said "If it continues for two more months, come back and we may need to look inside by surgery." she said sometimes the scan doesn't show everything. What could this be? It's really tiring and I'm getting really tired of going to countless Dr. appointments with no answers.

  • Book recommendations for daughter?

My daughter has to do a book report on a non-fiction book. The book needs to be at least 100 pages, and preferably not more than 200. Any fun ideas? Looking for something that grabs her attention quickly as she loses interest easily! She likes animals, and she may also find an biography interesting... We need easy reading; looking for books recommended for kids between the ages of about 9 and 11.

Any and all ideas are appreciated, thank you!

  • kidney problem, what could be wrong?

To make a long story short, I was recently diagnosed with a kidney infection. Was on strong antibiotics for 10 days.. When I went to the dr shortly after I was done w/the medication, they found blood in my urine... For the next week after that I felt ill - tired, low fever, and back pain, so I got put on different antibiotics, which I've been on for six days now. I felt way better at first (not sick anymore), but the pain is still there. I have a low-grade fever, which I just got again tonight, and my kidney area is aching (the pain fluctuates) and lower back pain. I don't have any strange urine symptoms, but I do feel crampy near my bladder area at times. I am still on the antibiotics and will be for another 5 days.

I am going back to the dr. on Wed and am getting a CT scan soon, but I wanted to do some of my own research.

Also, all of my blood work came back normal.

Any ideas as to what this could be?

  • Causes of Kidney Infection?

What are the causes of kidney infections, not including bladder infection?

I've had 2 kidney infections in the past 4 months, and neither stemmed from a bladder infection. I have no more sign of infection, but my kidney hurts What can be wrong?

The Dr. has advised me to finish my medication for the kidney infection, and see how it feels after that. But it was not my regular Doc, and I'm not sure how much I trust him. I will be seeing my regular doc next week, but in the meantime, trying to figure out the possibility's.
